I guess we need to ask the authors anyway, at least for the startrek-themed games since we cannot provide our whole game to be Creative Commons like FreeOrion for example since most our artwork is startrek and therefore not creative commons. Hence all the musicians need to give their explicit permission for use IMO. Last I heard Creative Commons is a "snowball"-license, i.e. every product you link with the creative commons work must be creative commons too in the end. Could be wrong though. Only our new bote content should be safe. Still I'll ask for all tracks sir p. finds suitable for the game, both st-mod and original one.

Actually, we are completely free to do whatever we want with them, copy, distribute, remix, all fine as long as we give credit in the manner specified by the author and that we dont make money form them. Also, these licenses are not reciprocal / Share-Alike ("snowballing") either. This is from Kevin's website: Quote: If your project has only one piece in it; you can credit it as "Music: Kevin MacLeod". If your project has many pieces, you can credit as "(name of the piece of music you are using) Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)". If you'd like to include the full license for legal reasons, you can do the following: "Title Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons "Attribution 3.0" http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/" Quote: Creative Commons "Attribution 3.0" You are free: to Share — to copy, distribute and transmit the work to Remix — to adapt the work
Under the following conditions: Attribution. You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work). For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the license terms of this work. The best way to do this is with a link to this web page. Any of the above conditions can be waived if you get permission from the copyright holder. Nothing in this license impairs or restricts the author's moral rights. As for any of the PodSafe ones, the website says they are under the Creative Commons "Attribution-Noncommercial 2.0" license ( http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.0/) Quote: Creative Commons "Attribution-Noncommercial 2.0" You are free: to Share — to copy, distribute and transmit the work to Remix — to adapt the work
Under the following conditions: Attribution. You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work). Noncommercial. well, I wonder why it says nothing about the legal status of the project - non-commercial or not - you're using the cc-licensed work in with. I had thought that they wouldn't have their work used in a project with legal gray status and such not being involved that way into contributing to such a project and improving it...

Quote: Attribution. You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work). The bit in bold means that the authors are not endorsing your work, or your use of their work, I assume that in the full version of the legal code, there is a section that frees the authors from any legal issues that might arise. Edit: Yep.. from the full version of the Creative Commons "Attribution 3.0" legal code: Quote: 6. Limitation on Liability. EXCEPT TO THE EXTENT REQUIRED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT WILL LICENSOR BE LIABLE TO YOU ON ANY LEGAL THEORY FOR ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF THIS LICENSE OR THE USE OF THE WORK, EVEN IF LICENSOR HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

I found some very nice relaxing tunes some bavarian guy made/makes for Infinity: The Quest for Earth. Already pm'ed him this morning. Hope it turns out well! http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infini ... p?p=139194Edit: I also pm'ed Yu and Auralmancer for some nice original sound effects to be used in space battle later on!

Very nice and very spacey in a good way - I hope you can get permission to use this.

still awaiting reply from the three. Found 2 other artists there with external pages. Haven't listened to the music yet: http://nutritiousmultimedia.googlepages ... tiousmusic and http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default ... dID=469394 . If someone could have a look and tell me if it's worth a pm? ![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

I listened to some of the selections on the first link and they are OK. It is slow and spacey stuff. Some times I like fast pounding adrenalin and cortisol stimulating audio but this is OK too. It would be nice to have permission or even direct involvement.

okay, will do so tomorrow I guess. I got reply from Mr. Chen Yu and it was a positive one ![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif) . I'd need everyone looking at his full music portfolio ( http://www.kaiyoti.com/ )to vote over which one we could take in-game and in what in-game situation: yu wrote: Hi Malvoisin, I had a look at this project. Looks very promising. Although since I'm never a... decent gamer, I've yet heard of Master of Orion. But I had a look at the trailer, it's looking great and I am very interested in this project.
Also had a chance to hear some of the music done for this project. It seems like no talents are absent, most of which I couldn't have done better myself. However, without sounding too harsh, the mixing of music could have a little work. The other parts like the themes sound terrific. So exactly what portions would you like from me?
And I like to let you know that I'm currently working on another project aside from Infinity so time is very limited for me. I can work on a "contributor" level, not as a dedicated staff. If that's okay with you.

He has very nice work. It would be a big bust to have his contributions. Would he be willing to contribute to the selection process and interacted directly on this site? I should not email to ask him from work but perhaps the offer should come from you at this point anyway. If we use his work and give credit it would be nice to have him make the selections based on galactic race and game setting.

Hey can I get the SharePoint login again, I'll upload all the tracks I have. I do have three somewhat distinct Klingon themes currently in the running.

great! I think mike will do that asap. I'm eager to hear them! You need to pm him your email address in order to get the pw mail correctly. as far as the other thing is concerned, I guess it's best if we first go through his work ourselves (mike, sir p. after weekend, kenneth, matress, strings, cdrwolfe et al. to name a few here) and categorize them to our needs since we know best where they fit. Chen Yu hasn't played any 4x games yet as he stated so it's best we tell him where we want his stuff and where we think improvements could be made song-wise. I think we need to organize this a bit *looking at MoE* ![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif) , would anyone take this over?

davumaya, I thought you already had upload at SharePoint. Do PM Mstrobel for a login. Malvoisin, it would be nice if we could have more than one musical selection to cycle during extended play. The same music all the time burns a hole in my head. We seam to be getting multiple uploads per race as it is. For the subject at hand something like this - Menu: Grim Spirit Cardassian: Jungle Rumble Federation: Autobots Descend Klingon: Air Strike Romulan: Pillage of the Pirates Dominion: Demon Awakening Whatever: Aixs Theme http://www.kaiyoti.com/

I thought Kenneth was sorting out the music, Mal? What needs to be sorted? I haven't really been doing anything at all with the music or the models in a few months, so you probably know more than I do. I've just been checking out the tracks or the latest images, and that's it. ![Embarassed ](./images/smilies/icon_redface.gif)

it was just an auto-reflex when talking about organizing, nothing serious ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif) but, everyone could try and listen to those tracks too and make comments to Kenneth's list.

I just listened to the Steve Jablonsky Remakes and I'm wondering if it's too close, you know, copyright-wise. Does anybody know the original themes and can tell if it's far enough to be called an original work?

I have uploaded a new Klingon and Romulan theme to SharePoint folders respectively. Again my username is davumaya I am going to issue Creative Commons attribution to all my work - requiring simple endorsement "Music by Eric James - http://www.myspace.com/ericjames" Note all my pieces are original works written in Noteworthy and then midi notes are "recorded" via sampling. There is no direct note for note transcription from existing Trek notes, only mimicing rhythms and tonal quality. Nothing from me should be considered remixes or re-recordings. In fact if you got me an orchestra, they could perform the pieces as is. I will be shortly uploading Cardassian and Dominion themes. After that I will be working on other tracks that may be useful, death, cut-scenes, openings, etc. After that I will be working on variations of themes and more "chill" music that breaks up the themey-ness of the same old -- probably jazz/electronica type.

Greetings! I was directed to this thread, so here I am and making all proper introductions. My name is Ermis, from Greece and a long time fan of Star Trek, the movies and some of the series (sorry, DS9 never was my cup of tea). I am also a musician, having released material on two labels and various compilations. If you combine these two great passions the result is an urge to make music for Star Trek. So, I was informed of this project and read that the makers are interested in fan music for the game. What better opportunity for me! I would be interested to take part in this, should you find that I am indeed able to assist you in any musical way. I mostly make electronica, from soothing ambient to crystal New Age and from pounding marches to cybernetic beat-driven industrial music. All according to mood actually. I understand that results are more than words, so I would like to link you with some of my music, unreleased material, ideas and innuendos. Allow me to point out (it's a necessity) that the material of the following link is property of mine and that any distribution of it without my written concent is prohibited by law. (sorry guys, I need to type this in, really sorry for that). Anyhoo, this is a track called NCC1701a which I created some time out of my love for the Star Trek theme and story. It has samples from other films as well in it, which can (and will) of course be excluded if used in the game, or (even better) replaced by any possible voice acting from the game itself. http://www.pwned.gr/share/NCC1701a.mp3I can make any theme you want (please let it not be disco), or any kind of ambience that can be present throughout parts of the game (ambient game music is so oftenly neglected). Anyway, I am rambling ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif) I'd be happy for any possible feedback. Live long and prosper. \\//

hey sandman ![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif) I like this track. good stuff! As I see DS9 was not your favorite I guess I can't convince you to write a cardassian ambient game theme or a dominion one for that matter ![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif) . But I think it would be a nice touch to the game if the different eras like the Kirk one for example gets different tunes to catch the different moods (and tunes people remember from the series; all to a certain 'legal' degree of course as you mentioned) a little better (DS9 was more the all-out-modern-war thing while TOS was more about getting the girls *joke* ![Lol ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif) ). So maybe there would be fields for you to work on and make music for. The same holds for in-game tactical battle I think. Different eras, different tunes ![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif) .

Welcome to the collective Sandman. We would love to add your biological and technological and creative distinctiveness to our own. I like your music. I am, for the most part, a ship engineer - building and adapting models for the game. I have also done voice acting and found some share music for the project. Please see some of the other music we have considered using located at the link below. Our SharePoint where this is stored crashed a while back and what you find here is where we were about a year ago. http://www.botf2.com/Shared%20Documents ... 44987A3%7dAnd some of the voice acting located here http://www.botf2.com/Shared%20Documents ... 44987A3%7dWe have not regained access to the SharePoint so have started to load our ship models on this site. If you have music to upload for our use we can ask our administrator here to set up a location for it. I would like to back up new voice acting as well. Again welcome to the collective and thank you for your time and consideration. We all know how important music is to the game. I understand that JJ Abrams, the director no the new Star Trek movie, found his composer from a game soundtrack. ![Borg :borg:](./images/smilies/borg.gif)

Hi Ermis and welcome to the forum! (At last a fellow Ellinas (=Greek)! ![Twisted ](./images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif) ). I really liked the track you composed, it's very original! By the way, if you don't mind me asking, how did you learn of the project? Was it by the Facebook group? I am just asking to see if the latter works. PS I've posted on more than a dozen of the major programming groups and on a couple of the hugest (>3000 members) of the Star Trek groups, so I'm curious if it works...

Thank you all for the warm welcome and nice words. @ Malvoisin: You think I should give the DS9 another chance? Hmm, perhaps I could. Anyhoo, I do "enjoy" the cardasians as a race, I could write an ambient theme about them. If you asked me what I would prefer to do, what style of music, surely I would choose to make more "future" music, more based on electronica, but I can give a shot to anything that is required, really, I just prefer doing electronica and ambient music. Besides, they are more or less what I am listening to on my free time. @ Kenneth_of_Borg: I can use that space, I can use my own space, whatever suits more, I have no problem with that. Can I use those voice acting files? I enjoy putting voice samples of the music, they add a more cinematic feel. @ Captain_Picard: I indeed learned of the project through the Facebook group (finally and for once that silly page was found useful). Than you for the kind words regarding the track. So, to capitulate. In order to put things into a perspective, some things need to be put down and planned. That is if the makers of this game want me on the team first of all. Secondly, if yes, a roadmap needs to be set. I will need to know as specificaly as possible how much music and what kind of music do you want me to make. It would be perfect if I knew what I am to make, will make my focus better instead of just writing random music. If you could tell me what kind of themes are needed, which music style, it will be perfect. The other thing I need to know then, is how much time I have on my hands. When will tracks need to be ready. And I know most will say "well nothing needs to be ready at a specific point", but really, deadlines help gather up and produce ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

good, then let's get started you might want to download both major games here, Supremacy and BotE, and listen to their in-game music. You will find 3 tracks in the Supremacy resources/music subfolder and 4 tracks in the bote/sounds/ folder. After that you will have a concrete example on what kind of music is needed. I can only speak of bote but I think mike agrees with me, we need just more of them. For bote, the 4 tracks are assigned to the 4 currently playable races, so each race gets one tune which repeats itself all the time you're playing. A second set of those 4 tunes, i.e. 4 more tunes of similar kind, would give more variety. Then a third, fourth set and so on, you get the idea ![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif) . Voice-acting should be mainly done for the 3D tactical battle. Of course it could also be nice in the main game race themes. At best you provide two versions, one with the voice acting included and one without them. Usually, all contributions are shared with all botf2 projects here so you'll be part of both teams and get mentioned in the games' credits of course. Looking forward to your tracks! Btw. BotE plans its next alpha release version sometime by the end of the year so I'd say x-mas this year is a good deadline for a new set of race ambient themes ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif) .

So, if I got this correctly, you need game music for the four races, as much as possible. Alrighty, I will download all themes and have a listen, then start working on something similar (or unsimilar, we'll see ![Razz :p](./images/smilies/icon_razz.gif) ). I will leave voiceacting samples out of the tracks for now, once the music is set, it's quite easy intalling samples over it. At the same time, I will record any possible idea that pops to mind, wouldn't hurt to have as much music as we can, then we can select out of an even bigger music pool which goes where. Will also make some general ambient music, just in case, perhaps even a more "theme-like" track. Christmas sounds perfect, will even give me time to move into my new studio next month and work from there. Uhm, I think I need an account for that site where you have everything uploaded, the forum username and pass do not function at the time. Once that is set, I will upload there and notify here. And one last thing, please specify the four races, in the folder I see directories for six races.
