Sorry for the long absence, guys - I upgraded to Sibelius 5, and have been facing a steep learning curve along with the upgrade. I have several pieces in the works (Cardassian and Dominion tracks, as well as another Fed track) and am hoping to have them to you soon.

Just a quick note (har har), it'd probably be most useful to focus on Federation tracks for now, as the Federation interface is the first one being developed. Of course, you're free to work on whatever you most enjoy :).

Hmm, I'm not sure what Ferengi music would sound like--I hope their musical inclinations are better than their fashion sense ;).

Hmm...i'm not a legal expert so not sure about this, but I *think* it might be illegal to use it - it's the official music of Trek afterall, even if someone else has physically made this.

Anyone know any better than me? I'm not fluent in legalese...and hope I never will be! :P

I won't use any music in Supremacy without the copyright holder's permission, unless it's public domain (which this certainly is not). That includes third party arrangements of other people's work.

It was nice to point it out. Thanks for your effort. We hope for more contributions of original music to avoid legal issues.

hm, terak and eric, if you got the time, it'd be nice if you could do a khaoron track again. as i recently heard from Joker, our track must be the kli_encounter.mp3 from a certain activision game (maybe armada, don't know, Joker hasn't said). so it's not that good to distribute that around ;). Of course no one's to blame here, it's just that the files most probably got mixed up in the course of time..

It's definitely not Armada, Mal, as I know every music track in the game. (Yes, i'm that sad lol)

It might be from Armada 2, but somehow it just doesn't sound like it's from an Armada game to me...

Here is what I found:

Holst's planets were finished in 1916 and first performed in their entirety in 1920 (making the composition public domain). Performance by US Air Force band.

Source: Performance by U.S. Air Force Bands Program (http://www.af.mil/band/wind.asp)

License - Information presented on Air Force Link is considered public information and may be distributed or copied. Use of appropriate byline/photo/image credits is requested

What I did:

I will upload some Holst where we did not yet have any music for the major races - Dominion, Cardassian,... and a credit file.

If you do not like it do not use it.

This is the text of an email from the United States Ari Force Heritage of America Band.
It is one of several regional bands run by the USAF. I emailed them about
permission to use there down-loadable recordings. (bottom line, it is OK to use if you
can download it from an USAF band page.
Other military band site will likely
have the same setup - if someone wants to pock around for more OK to use
tunes. I think we still should slip in a line of credit to them.

text of email:

Good morning and thanks for your email. The USAF Heritage
of America Band is not in a legal position to grant permissions
regarding use of our recordings of published and copyrighted works of
music. That said, our recorded performance of any work that resides in
the public domain also is in the public domain, and can be used freely
by anyone. No credits or acknowledgements are necessary. A good
guideline for public domain recordings by the band is to look on our
website. Any work that is down-loadable from our website as an mp3 file
is a public domain work. Please let me know if you have any further
questions.

Thank you,

I think we found a new source for a "classical music mod" to the games...

good job kenneth, start downloading the files you like best and do a compilation(i.e. put out 1-3 mp3 files for each race, convert it to ogg, might even consider mixing those mp3s together to one single file for each race, and then put them up on sharepoint). After that and if the sounds appeal, we can upload it to the regular afc download server here and serve those files as a classic addon for everyone who likes classic music in strategy games (like in Hearts of Iron for example to name one of those games).

I have added several new MP3 to SharePoint music. If and how they will be used can determine what we do with them. For now they are in the Dominion, Romulan and Cardassian sub-folders.

Hehe sounds like you guys are definitely on the ball with this stuff. I had also considered reaching out to other musicians and artists as well as recorded ensembles. I have hit a brick a bit with the music, I'm not entirely satisfied with what has already been produced mostly because the synthetics are simply too midi-like. I think I'll pare down the melody themes and just expand on them. I'm guessing I can upload to this site? Where would that be? ~ Eric --- hehe American English is so quaint isn't it?

Hey davumaya, haven't seen you around in a long while! Glad to see you're still in the land of the living! :P

I'm not sure what gI is, but if you're asking about where we keep all the files, the site is Here.

So good to see you again Sir. Your tunes are good so if you can make them better that is great. Send a private message to mstrobel to get access to upload files to the SharePoint. MOE has the link above so click on "music" to hear what is there. (need the id password to upload but anyone can listen in) I have no pull with Britney for tunes so if you can put in a good word....

This site http://www.podsafeaudio.com/ has loads of music under the Creative Commons license and the artists there have agreed to allow their music to be used by anyone in any way and form for podcasts, as long as you don't take credit for the original work and that you are not making money with it. Although only podcasts were mentioned, I think we might be able to lift a couple of them for use them as game music. It wouldn't hurt though to send the artist(s) whose music we use an email letting them know that we want to use their song. Hopefully they'll be happy to know that their music is getting out there and is appreciated by other people.

Also, this guy on another forum I frequent posted this on 12-21-2007:
Quote:
Subject: Offered: Audio ( Effects, Music, 3D Positional Sounds, etc... ) Free

If anyone needs gameplay music, or in game sound effects I'll work on the project for free. I'm doing it free, for some music for the game industry experience. Email me at dman0042j60@hotmail.com

I use Fruity Loops 7 and Adobe Audition 3, I can make any kind of sound effect, pre-made 3D positional audio for game scenes, sound effects for almost any kind of enviroment. I can also create gameplay Music, battle music... specific to YOUR needs.

Sounds promising, I'll give him an email in a bit, still browsing PodSafe. Some good stuff there.

excellent find!

hm, is the film music section a place for "imagined" self-created film music or are these real film music tracks which were recomposed?

Most are self created judging from what I have listened to so far.

Oh, I found another site with loads of royalty free orchestral music, all of them by a new composer called Kevin MacLeod, some of them are perfect for BOTF, and they are all licensed under Creative Commons "Attribution 3.0".

Check these ones out, I think they're just right for battles:
"We got Trouble" - Kevin MacLeod (4:41)
Dark, evil, and very tense. I don't like the sudden trumpet bit though... well, Dominion?
"An Upsetting Theme" - Kevin MacLeod (Loopable)
Unnerving, dark, mysterious, eerie, intense... I think Romulan :) but the glockenspiel (orchestral bell sounds) might not be okay with everyone.
"Action" - Kevin MacLeod (3:15)
Dramatic with a faint melody in the background, has a majestic feel to it too.

The site and the search is here. There are some really good ones suitable for gameplay too... like this one below, which is apparently based off of a feel of Holst's 'Neptune'.
"Wizardtorium" - Kevin Macleod (3:27)

will listen to it as soon as I finished the ".net in unmanaged code" webcast (still half an hour to go, it's quite long ;)). btw. sounds very promising, at least the using of .net coded dlls seems really smooth with the regasm.exe and tlbexp.exe tools. The guy says that only a 20mb download of .net framework redistributable would be needed at minimum on the client machine, well guess, that's kind of old knowledge since the webcast was made 3 years ago :).

Ok Malv, i'll continue listening through, he has made available hundreds of orchestral pieces, and not all are as foreboding as the ones above. There are some suitable for normal gameplay too.

When I find more suitable battle themes, I'll edit. I'm focusing on battle themes for now :)

quick-listened to them, feel quite appropriate, not too "thick", maybe a little thin but in the end, they suit botf2 I guess ;). Some remind me a bit of Dune2 feeling.. ;)

Yeah, I know what you mean about them being a bit "thin", compared to the original BOTF's battle theme, these are actually slow paced.
