hey, I was just following that link from jig to turbosquid and look what nice things there are to be found. There are a couple of races/factions that could be referred to as Pirates, such as the Orion Pirate Cartel, and possibly the Maquis. I've also already got Space Pirate attacks as one of the random events:

The words of the Founders cannot be spread if we cannot support our fleets. Pirates are attacking the shipping lanes in system _____, and as a result all trade in the system has ceased. Dispatch a fleet to show what attacking us means to anyone else with plans to attack our shipping. D


This random doesn't make Pirates a combat random...but I could easily change that. :)

If we could have an "extra" race of Pirates that don't have a homesystem but would randomly attack planets, it would add some strategy and mean you could be attacked at any time even if you've got alliances with everyone! Whilst you've got to live in fear of attacks from the Borg, Species 8462, the Sphere Builders, Gomtuu, Crystalline Entity, the Doomday Device, the Calamarain, the Husnock, the Cytoplasmic Being/Void, the Chodak, and the Giant Amoeba, these are all extremely rare events. If we could make pirate attacks a relatively common random event, this would help to ensure that players maintain decent fleets that would then be ready to take on these challenges. It would also help to reduce the likelihood that a player would be soo successful that he would eliminate anmy threat from the other races. (However unlikely this may be) We could also base thefrequency of the attacks on an equation, such as;

The no. of ships you have divided by the number of planets that you own/protect + a random factor = the number of pirate attacks within your Empire per 100 turns.

Obviously this is just an example and i'm not very good at maths...so come up with your own. :P

Anyways. owning more planets will obviously increase the chances that you'll be attacked simply because your Empire is bigger, whilst a larger fleet would help to reduce the threat of attack/destroy existing pirate forces. Anyways, we don't even know if pirates are going to be in yet. It's all up to Mike and SirP. Pirate attacks would give you something extra to think about, and would mean you would need to ensure your military is spread out effectively enough to deal with any threats without being spread too thinly. This would definitely ad extra strategy to the game, so cross your fingers that they decie to add them in. :mrgreen:

The Ferengi could support and collaborate with these Pirates effectively setting up a pirate network as a special building on one of their planets and committing latinum and/or actual ships/fleets to them, i.e. setting up a pirate fleet (or more likely dozens of them) which has/have unlimited range and can infiltrate any other empire stealing goods, attacking small transport vessels while themselves cannot be hunted down the usual way with moving into the same sector. Fortuity decides if your regular fleet encounters a pirate fleet and get involved in a fight with them. Captured goods by the pirates will be divided up to the Ferengi by a certain portion. Of course this works only if the Ferengi are at least a medium, i.e. expanding race (hint at supremacy ;)).

...Which they already are. :P

The Ferengi actually have three special structures and three possibly five ship designs already - which is considerably more than any of the other minor races, including the Vulcans. The Vulcans have better structures and ships to make up for that fact, however.

I just replied to Comco's message, and I came up with a list of all the models that MAY be needed depending on which combat-specific random events are used. These models are:
