I am not a degreed scientist. Astrophysics & astrogeology are hobbies. I am an amature: I do it because I love it... and I love to discuss it. As such, my opinions should have no more weight than anyone elses.

Just like every Trek fan that has ever lived. How could you not want to discuss Trek? 8O
These are forums, anyway, everyone's opinion is equally valid and weighted. (Unless they give reason for you to doubt them, of course...certain people spring to mind here... ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif) )

Hold on, so lemme get this straight. there are no ferengi anymore in the game, their place has been taken by the dominion. ok.Could there not been a way to implement the borg as one of the major races? yes, I understand the difficulties...
oooh.
I dunno. coz if there are goin to be lets say diferrent kinds of nebulae, couldn't that fact make room for the borg to use them as theior home worlds, opened to loot by all others, but not being able to overtake the nebulae themselves? Or is the problem itself only 5 major races?
Sorry guys just thinkin out loud here

So far, the ferengi are in, but as a minor, expandable, currently not-playable race. The Dominion have taken the major race spot instead.
The borg are in as a destructive non-playable race and will be alotted a homeworld to start from, as far as is known (although this could have changed)
By non-playable I mean at the moment, but later mods could be made to make either of them, or just about any race, playable.

What's the final word on the Borg? I hated the way they just appeared in the original game, and had no home...

OmniQ is trying to get in touch with gavin about the random events, to make sure we aren't working on things tht won't make it into the game and see if he has any ideas for us to work with.
We've set the Borg as one of the random events, but depending on how Gavin has worked them, they might be in in another form. (Eg. an unplayable Empire)
Anyway, until OmniQ lets me know about the fruits of his endevours, all I can say is how I think they will work.
- The Borg start off as a Random event. They invade with a small ship, probably a Sphere. The chances of their appearance will increase as your technology improves, since more advanced Empires will attract them for obvious reasons.
- The Borg attack and try to Assimilate a system. If they succeed, the System will become Borg space, and the system will start to produce more Borg ships. They then attack nearby worlds and try to assimilate them. If they fail, the Borg will return, but with a more powerful vessel, or several Spheres.
- You take them out, or they assimilate you.
Don't quote me on this, but this is how i think they will work.

Will they be "destroyed" if no borg system is left? I mean, will you be able to fully clean them up irrevocably?

is unimatrix 1 gonna be on the first planet they take over, or somewhere else on the map?

So on the cannon map will they always start off in the delta quadrant then? And then eventually make their way to the alpha quadrant later in the game?
I don't know if the caretaker array is still in, but if a ship of yours gets dragged to the delta quadrant early, and encounters the borg, do they then know of your location and decide to hunt you down? 8O

I doubt that. gavin has stated he kept AI and game structure as seperate as possible, so I think they will have to explore the galaxy as well.
Edit: It makes sense they get to know everything about your empire once they have assimilated the first colony, but not prior.

Try training some Defiant to legendary status - you only need 8 of them then.
Or you could try cloaking some D'deridex II's - you only need a taskforce or two of those.
...
In BOTF2, I imagine the Borg will essentially start off as weak, especially if they haven't actually assimilated a system yet.
Once they have assimilated a system and made it their home, they will be able to begin to build ships, although this will be at a slow rate, like it is for any one of the Empires. By the time they have assimilated several systems though, they will be far more powerful - all those extra drones is a real good thing for the Borg!
...
What if the Borg's ability to build ships was specifically tied to the number of systems they have assimilated?
So with only one system, they could only build Scout ships and the <Occaisional> Sphere.
After they have captured say...three systems, it should be made easier for them to build Spheres, and they should also be able to build Cubes, albeit slowly.
After they have assimilated 10 systems, they could then be able to build Tactical Cubes, and their ability to build ordinary Cubes would be increased.
<And so on>
Basing their ability to build ships on the number of systems they have assimilated would make the game more 'realistic', would mean that as they expand, they become an increasing threat, and it would give the player even more of an incentive to try and take them out as quickly as possible.
Instead of having to research like the other races, the Borg would just gain knowledge from assimilating other races, so by setting it so their advancement was keyed to assimilating systems, you could show them improving as they conquer the Galaxy!
What do people think?
Is this even possible Jig? ![Confused :?](./images/smilies/icon_confused.gif)

I like it that way if you got off ur bottem quick and took them down they be easiy to kill and it would fit in because the more systems they have the more they know (knolage the asimalte)! Although i doubt that the D'deridex II's matress you know what romulans are like ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

Good idea matress. I dont kow for certain, but it sounds like it could be a hassle to program that in for them. But as long as someone could do it, and was willing to do it, I'd say go for it.
