I have not played an online game with voice communication in quite some time. Does anyone know of a good voice communication program we can use for Supremacy beta testing?

Yes, while you play the game you are talking to the other players. There is a program running on your PC for two way conversations. I used my plantronics headset and programs like Team Speak and Game Voice to do it in the past.

It would be nice to have that while we begin beta testing.

I didn't know any games supported a feature like that. i've heard people talk of this team speak thing but i've never used it. Might be a cool addition for Supremacy, but the game itself is the most important thing. I'd rather everything worked first before we start tacking on the cool extra stuff.

They are stand alone products so we can set it up in advance of beta testing. I will look into it with some gaming geeks I know.

I've seen this used in network gaming sites. It looks like a nice feature. CB

I've only ever used Skype once. Me, Jig, and Skeet tried having a group chat a couple of years ago. It barely worked, was laggy, and was confusing as hell. I haven't used it since. Why would you want to use it?

Apparently Team Speak 3 is the product that gamers I know use. You rent space on a server. I hear the rates are reasonable. As we get close I will post more on it.

Vent (Ventrilo) is a populare choice for World of Warcraft players as is Team Speak. Though I'd have to say vent is more widely used.

http://www.ventrilo.com/

They have several free servers, I think you can use a max of 10 people online, more than that you need to buy server space. A friend of mine for example buys a monthly subscription I think at $20/month (US Dollars) for 30-50 people (I forget the exact number). The quality is pretty decent too, I never really liked the team speak sound quality. The download of the program is free, which allows you to connect to peoples servers if you have the information.

I Hope that helps...

I've used Skype for years with no issues at all. In fact, once it's set up I'd say it's been the best voice over IP there is.
It used to be simpler to use though, I think they're tried to add too many features as of late.

Anyway, I'd say give it another go. There is something called ooVoo, it's very similar to skype.
I'd love to have a skype call with y'all.

Thanks Captain

Captain Bashir and I tested out Teamspeak 3. We want to have it ready for Mike's multiplayer update. Teamspeak will let us talk while we play the game. Teamspeak runs in the background while you have the game window up. I take it the update likely will take longer than July now that we are not going to Vegas but at least we are ready.

Teamspeak is a free download at his link:

http://www.teamspeak.com/?page=home download on the right.

Install the program and do not accidentally set left mouse click as mute like I did. Click on connect and it takes you to the default voice.teamspeak.com public servers. Enter your user name from the forums as your nickname. Do not put in a password at this point. Click the connect button in the new window. This will put you in a lobby. I then right clicked on the lobby channel and set up a temporary channel called Supremacy with a password. Captain was able to find me there. We were able to talk. (Sorry Captain for talking so much about star trek and my acting. I get carried away. It is fun to do if you are already in the LA area.)

I use a plantronic headset. I suggest a headset.

Once the game is out I can rent some dedicated space on a server for Supremacy. It will be more stable than the public server.

See Kenneth's post above. Thanks Kenneth

I had a good time chatting with Kenneth_O_B and learned a lot of interesting things. Let me add my two cents worth. When you install Teamspeak you get to one setup option where you pick a key sequence for muting the microphone. To the right of the button for doing so is the phrase "Highly recommended" or something like that. Pick a two key keyboard sequence that is unlikely to be accidentally activated when you are on. There is another option below this that I didn't do anything with.

I also recommend a headset (with a microphone). Get a USB port headset if you don't have one. They install easily (at least mine did).

When you sign on to Teamspeak, you are put into a general catch-all area (lobby) where you hear the computer telling you that people have come on and eventually have jumped off to another area of the server. The chatter takes a little getting used to. You can either initiate a separate site with password or hunt for an existing one and join it using a password. The design is slightly poor because as people sign on and jump away the list jerks up and down and trying to click on your site is a real test of dexterity.

Get Teamspeak. Perhaps everyone can get on sometime and say hi. For the purpose of the game, Kenneth generously offered to rent server space for us but maybe those of us with jobs can take turns paying a monthly fee. He thought it might be 5 bucks a month. Practically speaking you may only be paying once every 2 or 3 years (or more) depending on how many join. If we got on to say hi, we can use the free Teamspeak site.
Headset Bashir

Interesting. Just downloaded and installed it. The microphone on my webcam is a lot better than I thought it was. It was able to detect my voice no problem. Of course, my voice sounded nothing like *I* think it does, but that's the same with everyone.

Matress just might keep this program...

The Supremacy channel I setup goes away as soon as the last person leaves the channel. When you get Teamspeak installed you can contact someone here for a time and date to test it out. Go into the lobby, right click on the channel you are in and take setup a new channel. That is where you put in Supremacy and the password Klingon.

Well if we set up a time on when to meet, you'll have to give us instructions on *how* to actually connect to the Supremacy group Kenneth. I can't even log into the catch-all lobby using the default settings at the moment as it's apparently full, and I don't want to risk changing settings until I know what they do.

You just need to change the generic nickname to your own.

I did. And it's still failing.

<21:51:25> Connection failed because the server reached its maximum amount of clients.

I can confirm that these login details do not work on the teamspeak 3 client. :mischief:

Go to teamspeak and go to downloads and find the old versions link and grab the top one ts 2. I have placed a ts status service on the front page of star-trek-games.com.

The archived download page is Here.

There are two clients - download the first one, NOT the second (updated) one. The updated one apparently has some files missing.

Once installed, you can simply go to the Site Portal and click on Skeeter's new Teamspeak box to load it up and enter a room.

Yay! I knew TeamSpeak Existed, I just never actually knew how to use it. I'm using the old TeamSpeak 2, and the channel (did I spell that right?) works fine. :borg:

I also noticed that if you are running the game in full screen mode, the default setting, you will want to pin your TeamSpeak 2 to the tool bar. In windows 7 right click on the shortcut for TeamSpeak 2 and take pin to toolbar. During the game press the windows button to see the tool bar and get to the control panel for TeamSpeak.

If you do not run the game in full screen, see game options, just move the game window out of the way to see TeamSpeak.
