Actually, I "made" that pic (edited Mike's original image). Mike's work is a *lot* better The panels retract, so when you need to look at the map you can collapse them and expand them again later. The system panel might be useful for example if your fleet is in orbit of an enemy/neutral planet, and you want to keep tabs on the defense rating, pop level, etc. Might also be useful for terraforming, surveying/researching special stellar bodies, etc. Even on one of your own systems, you might want to know the defense level, to see if the system is properly defended or the fleet is needed there. You can, of course, get this info by closing the taskforce panel; but the tooltip (and it's just a tooltip, not a panel) saves you that trouble.

hi, i'm from rijeka, vjeko. @ .iceman in the original botf, when you would select order to terraform, planets would be visable again in the system window to select a planet to terraform, so it could be the same trick when wanting scan/research stellar bodies. but you have valid points on usefulness of star system shown to compare the strength of the ships and defense of the system when attacking. the tooltips are great thing, but maybe i just like old school lcars more only thing about that picture that is a little unfunctional, if i may say, is that these two panels cover a big part of the map unnecesarily. so maybe it would be better if ther is only one taskforce panel/window with "tree system". then when we have a fleet we can expand it to see the list ov ships in this fleet (shown under the fleet logo/name), without additional panels opening. + i have a question. in the original botf, there were things you could turn on/off on galactic map, like visable trade routs, system population shown by every star, system defenses, current build in every system... so will some of this thing be in supremacy aswell?

We will have to see what Mike does with it but I would guess a two monitor configuration would take care of those with the wherewithal.

i'm curious to why you decided to remove the personnel from supremacy? i thought it was a nice addup to the game along with raw materials and deuterium, cuz these are all the things (+ dilithium) you need to build and run a ship. i read on the forums that you have something new in mind, like heroes, but why not have both? i don't know how personnel is gained in the game, but it would be cool, if you decided to leave this aspect ov the game, that personnel would be gained through academies which could only be built on biggest systems, and you would also gain more personnel by colonizing smaller systems (because more people would go to the academies in the bigger system). so you would get some number of personnel per turn when you have academy, and that number would increase (a little) by colonizing other systems, and would increase a lot by building another academy (if you have colonized a big system). just an idea although i know that it wont be implemented

Personnel were removed as a resource. They'll be returning in the form of "agents". I think you'll like the new system better.

Hey all first time poster here. Just wanted to say thanks for continuing to work on this. I played the crap out of BOTF and always wished they would have made a followup with a larger universe, more minor races, tech etc etc. I have the game downloaded andhave been playing around with it, and from what I am seeing you guys are on the right track.
Thanks for taking your personal time to work on this for those of us who are computer illiterate. Its is appreciated.
Quick question - I read the new user / faq forum, with a date on the post going back to 2008. I am assuming there is still no combat or dimplomatic system in place? I have yet to come across an enemy vessel, and the 2 minor races I came into contact with joined my empire after bribing them.
Anyways keep up the good work.

Hey Xcathdra, welcome to the forums! Unfortunately, no there is no combat in the game - nor will there be in the next update either. Neither will there be an AI (Artificial intelligence) to play against. The AI will likely be the last thing added to the game simply due to the sheer complexity involved with creating an AI, especially with the level of complexity we're looking for. Without an AI, the minor races are programmed to ALWAYS accept any proposal you make to them. So don't bother sending anything other than membership messages! The long-term lack of an AI also means multiplayer will be complete long before singleplayer will be. Multiplayer is actually already possible, although you will need to swap IP addresses with the people you want to play against. We hope to add a lobby system of some kind in the future to make multiplayer easier to initiate and manage, but in the mean time, feel free to try and set up a game with someone on the forums. By the way, you can't yet declare war or invade systems either, so any multiplayer games will simply have to be about grabbing as much of the Galaxy as you can. We *did* have a combat system in the works (You can watch a demo video of it Here), but unfortunately, we found out only a few months ago that the underlying engine was Windows XP-compatible only, so we've had to scrap it. We therefore don't currently have a combat engine of any kind, although we still have several hundred 3D models that are ready to be loaded into whatever combat system we design in the future, and we've got some gorgeous models - at least in comparison to what BOTF had. Thanks to the considerable increase in processing power and memory that modern computer have over their counterparts 10 years ago, we can afford to have better models at the very least. Diplomacy is being worked on slowly, but I can't yet give an estimation of when that will be released. There's just soo much to be done. The next update will focus on bug fixes, add several new features, will update a huge chunk of the existing images (Structures, ships, etc), addresses typos and database issues, and adds some new game functionality. Even I don't know every single last feature that Mike is planning though, so expect surprises too.

It all sounds good to me... I would prefer a complex in depth game that works rather than a half built half intresting game (like BOTF - So much potential squandered).
I look forward to sticking around some time as I've always looked for games like this.
Take your time and get it right!
Thanks again.

Hey Falcon, programming development on the game is temporarily on hold because Mike is moving home as he is starting a new job. Development of other areas of the game is continuing in his absence, however. - Development is continuing on the 3D models. Zahadoom is working on the Romulan Fleetyard and Captain Bashir is currently working on the Constitution Refit, for instance. We currently have a catalogue of over 400 3D models.
- Development is continuing on the ingame images. Slim is continuing to make his gorgeous background images for the Intel and Diplomacy screens, and he recently started making images for the structures too. We're currently looking for someone to do the 3D modelling and painting needed to take these images from being hand-drawn pencilled images to fully-realised artwork.
- Development is continuing on the ingame database. .Iceman is fixing typos and implementing new races and structures.
Other project work is happening too. The BotE team are gearing up for the next release of Birth of the Empires soon.

Hey BobWarner, welcome to the forums! If you have any questions then fire away. I'll answer everything I can, and if I can't, i'll either find someone else that can, or i'll post a spoiler hint about it instead.

Just wanted to ask everyone when are we going to put out a new update? The last one is quite old and we have done a lot of work in the meantime.

There's no stardate for it as of yet. Mike moved home and started a new job, so programming development halted for several months. But he's settled in now and is working away at the game. He recently posted screenshots of the new system status and agents screens.
As for other game-related progress, we've got plenty of threads with examples of new artwork etc. for the game.

Why can't there be an update just on the artwork that is missing in the game. Just so that the game doesn't look abandoned. XD

I was hoping we could do the same thing. I think there is some feeling that the next update will be more exciting if it also includes a lot of new artwork. The problem is that we need an update so bad, an art update would be great to bridge the gap.

An update of any kind would certainly be welcome. The news page hasn't been updated in a long while. Got any news for us on that front, Mike?
It would be great if we could update StarTrekSupremacy.com as well.

I PM'd Mike a few months back asking if he wanted help updating his site but got no answer. Obviously he is busy with the new job. Bashir

Bashir Whoops, sorry, I've been horrible about replying to PMs lately. I'd rather not update the current site, but replace it completely and make it easier to update (e.g. use a content management system). Then you guys can help keep it up to date for me .

The existing Site Portal for these forums uses a content management system for posting information. I use it to post the news items, and whilst we don't have many of them, maybe 80% of the news articles were written by me. My free time might be nothing compared to what it used to be, but if you set up a content management system for the site, then I could post news items etc, or at the very least teach someone else how to do it. If we have a relaunch of the site, we could ask Hailing Frequencies to do an announcement for us to drum up traffic. I know that Zach was hoping to do an interview with you a few months ago, so he should definitely be willing to do something if we ask.

Apology accepted mike! This all sounds VERY promising. I have a thought too. Have you seen vjeko's blog on artwork for Supremacy? It would be rather cool to have individual pages off the Supremacy main page for staffers and selected other contributors for posting WIPs or finished work. This would make it easier to find. Give each person password control over their section with place for comments. The point would be emphasizing the display of the work, be it iceman's discrepancy corrrections, or someone's text writeup, or link to a You-Tube video, or someone's (you know who you are) music or other art contribution. Even the Manual Labourer's maual.

Hi, Yes, progressing at a good pace now. Mike is now adding system assault and bombardment. This will be a bombastic feature in the next update. There will be other nice features too, like "leaders". And new art and sounds. It will be a great update.

Is there is a skill you would like to learn? You may still be able to contribute. I knew nothing about CG but have been learning to help with the project.
