Post subject:  Maximum Map Display Size

Hi

I can't seem to zoom out to see the whole map.

The largest map view I can zoom out to is 24x12 of the 30x20 map.
It means I cannot view the whole galaxy easily.
I have to move around the map to get an overall picture.

The screenshots on the other threads in this section seems to show larger map views.

Is there anything I can do to change this?

it's the same with my computer - I think it depends on the used screen and I only have 1280x800.

In the game code is a maximun and minimun of zoom defined.

Ah, so for optimum gaming, resolution is critical.

I play on a laptop and resolution is restricted.
The preferred option is 1366 x 768.

What is the best resolution for playing BOTE?
I have an old antique tower PC that I could fire up to test.

Also, can the maximum and minimum zoom be redefined?

because of free source code it could be redefined - with Visual Studio 2008, but you need version "Standard" with MFC's (I think, min. 300 EUR - dont know in $), so I myself cant do  (also see http://bote-forum.square7.ch/wiki/index ... gramm-Code and respect copyright - the english version is on your computer: readme.txt topic 1.4

best resolution...dont know...just try out. I only have 1280x800. Tip: Mostly you can scroll the galaxy map with mouse with left button pressed or -especially in situations mouse is otherwise busy- by using arrow keys. That's the way I'm playing, and it works well for me.

In a previous modded version the game worked with galaxy map 40x30, and you also can change the max/min zoom.

Thanks for the update.
Sorry, I'va a 4 month old baby girl so she's keeping me busy.

Resolution sizes available on my laptop are:-
1366 x 768
1024 x 768
800 x 600

Oh well. I will have to manage.

I recently stopped designing for 4:3 and 5:4 resolutions in Supremacy and now design for widescreen displays. All aspect ratios are still supported, but I'm optimizing layouts for widescreen HD displays. All new screens are designed at 1280x768. Although this is an uncommon resolution with a non-standard 5:3 aspect ratio, it has the virtue of being proportionally similar to 16:9 while having the same minimum vertical resolution we have supported in the past (768 pixels).

We used to guarantee support for resolutions as low as 1024x768, and while I still try to accommodate that resolution, nothing lower than 1280 horizontally or 768 vertically is "officially" supported.

Considering the prevalence of widescreen displays nowadays, it seemed prudent to adjust our design strategy. You guys should follow suit :).

I agree with Mike. I'm also optimizing the user interface of Trekwar for a widescreen monitor running at least 1280x768.
It will work on 1024x768 but at that resolution windows like System Management, Research and the ShipDesigner will fill the entire screen.
This won't be a problem, except it might make it a little bit annoying to change from system to system (when managing build orders for several systems).. Maybe I'll add a next/previous button civilization style to that window.

Luckily Trekwar does not have a fixed very detailed user interface like BOTF/Supremacy, but instead you have movable windows. It might not look as good, but at least gives me less problems in regards to different resolutions, etc..

Still, the larger resolution, the better =)
