Ok so a year or so ago, I downloaded the "Galaxy Map" program and the .NET stuff to get it running. Everything worked fine. I then forgot about this project and recently stumbled back across it. Now, I am having a problem getting .NET 3.5 installed. It fails halfway through. I tried windowsupdate.com and all they have listed there is .NET 3.0

I tried to install .NET 3.0 from the microsoft site and it fails also. I went into add/remove programs and took a screen shot of what I have there. Take a look.

My question, do I need to un-install some of these .NET programs in there? If so, which ones? Do I use the add/remove feature or is there a more complete un-installer program out there?

My second problem is, I downloaded the supremacy client, unzipped, and I can't find a readme file for the life of me. Do I just run the setup from within the zip or what? When I extracted them to their own folder a bunch of the files prompted me to over-write which leads me to believe that is not the right course of action.

Any help is greatly welcomed.

usually it works with me without uninstalling manually but I guess you need to remove everything bearing a .net in its name from this list. Be sure to have the uninstall folders of .net not erased. If you have done so, there might be the only chance to download Service Pack 2 or better 3 (beta version I think) in order to get all needed files back onto your system.

just run the supremacyclient.exe afterwards, that's all, no need to setup or something.

You can try removing the service packs for .NET v1.x and v2.0 and then try installing .NET v3.5. I believe I once had a problem related to those.

As mal said, you need only to extract the Supremacy ZIP file into a folder on your harddrive and run SupremacyClient.exe (the one with the UFP emblem icon).

Supremacy doesn't have a setup readme because it doesn't really need one, Emwun. The installation requirements are all on Supremacy's pre-release download thread, and once those are installed, all you need to do is unzip the files into a folder somewhere - and that's it. There is no installation process required other than for the prerequisite programs such as .net 3.5. (For the latest version of Supremacy) Then just run Supremacyclient.exe to run the game and away you go!

You MUST put the Supremacy files into a different folder to any other previous Supremacy files though, or you'll encounter problems with conflicting files.

The really old versions of Supremacy from a year ago also require specific versions of .Net - they do not support newer versions, and will simply crash if you try to run them. Since these requirements are different to the latest version of Supremacy, it means you can only run one program or the other. You unfortunately cannot run the latest version if you want to run the old version, and vice-versa.

When you uninstall the .net framework, restart your computer before you reinstall it - as annoying restarting can be, it will ensure Windows has cleaned the registry of traces of .net before you reinstall it. I learned that after having problems reinstalling it once. I've also had problems with my computer not detecting older versions of .net even though 3.5 is supposed to be cumulative - I had to go back and install each individual version - 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, then 3.5 - before my computer would finally accept it was correctly installed. Do it this way as a last resort though, coz as you probably know, the .net downloads are massive and take a long time to install.

Good luck, and let us know if you encounter more problems - or succeses. :)

I still can't get it working right. I un-installed everything, still won't work. Tried putting them all back on in order. 3.0 won't install, nor will 3.5. I hit a wall and I don't know what else to do.

Here's the error I get when using windowsupdate.com to install .NET 3.0
Error Code: 0x13EC

This is the error I'm getting in the error log when trying to install. This is from the dotnetfx 3.5 error log.

[01/07/08,16:10:34] Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0a: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0a. MSI returned error code 1603
[01/07/08,16:10:45] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0a is not installed.

And finally here's the error from the dotnetfx3.0 error log

Thank you for participating in the Beta program. You must uninstall all pre-release products in a specific order before you can continue with setup. So after 6 frustrating hours, I'm making progress. "We've got a heartbeat Jim!"

I'll post again if I get it working.

I just pushed out another pre-release version with several bugfixes. You probably ought to snag it :).

The issues I encountered before your update were.

After sending a proposal in diplomacy screen, specifically in the outbox menu, when I right clicked and tried System or Main, the shortcuts didn't work. I had to go back to the "overview" and then out of embassy.

Another diplomatic problem that caused a crash, I had a minor join me bordering Cardassian space. Eventually the space became contested and when I went to embassy menu and clicked on threat to try and get the territory from them it crashed.

I know diplomacy is still in it's infancy, just thought I'd give a heads up.

Oh and for the racial picture for the Risa natives, how about Vanessa Williams? She was HOT in that episode!

If you want to change any of the images in Supremacy, just replace the ones in the Supremacy\Resources\Images\Races folder. As long as they have the same name and are either in .jpg or .png file type, then the gme will be able to use them.

As for the right-click issue, this is a known problem that Mike is working on. He might even have fixed it in his new version. I'm still downloading it at the mo so don't know. The threat crash is a new one to me though. It might be a one-off, it might be a bug. If you get any crashes in future, look for a file called error.txt and copy-and-paste anything in that file into a post. Mike might be able to track down the issue then.

As I said before, the new version must go into an empty folder though. Keep your old folders if you must, but delete the contents first.

I'm glad you've got the game working, and let us know if you have more comments.
