Hi,

I have just found your site and had a fit when I saw you were doing a sequel to BotF. It is on my all time favourite game lists and I really hope this will be too :bigthumb:

I installed the .NET framework and then downloaded the game. I can run the application and ge tthe start menu up but whenever the game goes to create a universe it brings up an error message and the whole game crashes. Ive attached my error logs and hope that it is an easy fix as I cant wait to get onto it.

Thanks in advance

that's the typical bug when having installed an outdated .NET version. .NET 3.5 has several "sub"-version as in beta, RTM1, etc. Try and look for RTM or the latest you can find on the microsoft download page.

Incorrect installations of .Net are the most common cause of crashes with Supremacy. Mike (The developer) is building the game on the newest and most flexible technologies that he can, which means you often need a very specific version of .Net, and since .Net 3.5 was in development for a while, a number of beta versions of it were released by Microsoft before if was finalised.

You can find the version that you need Here.

May I ask though, where did you download the "wrong" version of .Net from? A link to download the correct version is in the same post as the Supremacy download link. Did you miss it, or did you have problems with the link?

By the way, welcome to the forums. :)

Thanks :)

I tried it again with the link that you provided but i am getting the same error as before. I tried reextracting all the files but the same thing happened again. Is there something i need to install or is just extracting it what im meant to do?

I got the link for downloading the .NET from one of the other bug posts that i had a look at to see whether i could fix it without asking.

Post subject:  Re: Bug Report

That's strange. Do you have any other versions of .Net installed? I know that some new computers come with .Net 2.0 already installed, and I know of a few programs that require .Net 2.0 as well.

.Net 3.5 *should* update any old versions that you have, but for whatever reason that might not be happening for you. I'm not sure what it's like on Vista, but on XP you can check what programs you have by going to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs. If any other versions of .Net are in your list of installed programs, try uninstalling them, then restart your computer, then try installing the version in my download link.

If that still doesn't work, i'll nudge Mike and see if he knows what the problem might be.

You could try uninstalling the game and .net. After a reboot try reinstalling 3.5 and the game. Even if it does not work it should keep you buys for a while. :borg:

Post subject:  Re: Bug Report

i never had troubles to install supreacy after to have installed framework but i had troubles with windows update fo some security update, wich give errors msg and solutions to fix this

so i have checked microsoft advices about it and did exactly as said

uninstall all framework (with reboot each time)
use window update, you should see offered framework 2 (if not framework 1) install it

then come back to window update and install the new update offered for the version installed, reboot and do it again till windows update will not offer update for it

i don't remind if framework 3 is automaticly offered by windows update, if not in microsoft download look for framework 3 and install the lowest version then again use windows update to reach the latest version necessary for supremacy

Post subject:  Re: Bug Report

Ok, follow those instructions and let us know what happens. I've never seen Windows update advise you to upgrade update past .Net 2.0 though, so you *might* still need to install the 3.0 AND 3.5 updates manually. Fingers crossed it works. :)

Post subject:  Re: Bug Report

Cracked it! Tried reinstalling the whole thing but that failed. I then checked and found the reason it wasnt working is I had managed to download a copy of the game from 2006. When I found the new version it worked first time without any problems and can I just say it looks fantastic so far :bigthumb:

Post subject:  Re: Bug Report

That is great. I guess we should track down the old version so it is no longer made available. :borg:

Post subject:  Re: Bug Report

2006 version? There shouldn't be any more old links on the forums, I personally changed all the links I could find into links that instead point to the first post of the Pre-release download thread several months ago. They would never be outdated that way. I'm surprised a link has managed to elude me and everyone else for so long.

Any ideas where the rogue download link is thunder?

I am working mainly for Supremacy at this point.

At the bottom of the page that takes you to is a link to audio files we have already compiled.
Talk to MOE about permission to upload.

If you're serious about helping make the game(s), then i'll be happy to give you upload permissions to the servers. Just let me know when you need it and i'll change your account settings for you. As well as the link in Kenneth's post above, you might want to contact Malvoisin and CdrWolfe to see if they are in need of any specific voiceover effects.

Post subject:  Re: Bug Report

The audio link above at Star-Trek-Games.com is to a set of voice clips we decided on a while back for the combat engine. They can serve as outline to the text of any new clips for Combat. The Dominion is the only race without a full set of voice clips at this point. It is also a good idea to have more than one voice for each race doing these short clips. They did that in the original game and the verity sounds better.

There are a few recording there you should not try to emulate. These longer clips are intended for a game trailer. They have more than one voice and sound effect. If you get spunky you could try something like that as well but for now it is the short clips we need for use in the combat engine. Do not add sound effect to the short clips. The sound effect will come from the combat engine.

Mike asked that we use MP3 to keep the file size down but I would suggest working in wave or something better than MP3 before you convert and upload as MP3. A program that will help you clean up the recording is helpful. I like to reduce the dead air before and after the voice and take out background noise between words. A quality microphone is a must. Be careful not to have the microphone too close or it will pick up your breath sounds.

Post subject:  Re: Bug Report

If you need a program to convert/edit sound files, i'd recommend you try NCH's Wavepad program. There's a free trial available in that link...but there are ways around such things. :mischief:

Wavepad is capable of converting sound files into a wide range of common sound file types, but at the same time allows you to edit the sounds themselves, so it's also like a MUCH move advanced version of the Soundpad program that comes with Windows. It also has features that can remove background noise like Kenneth suggested.

Alternatively, if you just need a program to convert sound file types, try NCH's Switch program. It doesn't have the sound editing features of Wavepad, but is able to convert sound files into a wider range of filetypes and sound qualities.

Post subject:  Re: Bug Report

We look forward to hearing your work. Some people offer to help, a few make some content for us and rarely, very rarely, we get a new long- term drone. There is a lot of work to go around. :borg:

I went from a game player to developer on this project. My model and voice acting, recording skill, such as they are, were picked up on the fly. People here were nice to let me stumble along until I could produce some usable content. We hope for a long term working relation with each new offer and are happy for whatever we get.

Post subject:  Re: Bug Report

Just so you know i use wav files for the combat engine asmp3 requires a license.

I'll eventually get around to the Dominion Voices :), and finally all races have missnig vocals, because i created a few more ;).

What new lines do you need for the combat engine?

Post subject:  Re: Bug Report

Which ever races you need ill have a go at and may have a go at some of the already completed races incase theres anything i can add, unless you dont need that.

Author:  Kenneth_of_Borg [ 10 Dec 2008, 22:37 ]
Post subject:  Re: Bug Report

We need that. Redoing lines already recorded, some with small changes, will give us the variety we need. Don't you hate those games that just keep repeating repeating repeating the same line until you turn off the sound? Please be creative and make the game better.

I may try to grab some more voice actors over the holidays.

If you need some further inspiration, let me know. I can send you the voice clips from Starfleet Command 2. There's some brilliant dialogue and taunts in there.

"I love the glow of a plasma-ravaged ship against the stars..."
