Hi, like the site.
Firstly:
Is the game going to be a free release? If not, how are you going to get around the copyright laws. Activision seem to have most of them stitched up pretty tight.
Second:
What sort of system requirements will the game have?
Good luck with the game ...

Hey there! Welcome to the site!
Firstly, you don't have to worry - the game is 100% FREE. You'll be able to download it off the site (It currently weighs in at around the 700mb mark or so though, so if you haven't got Broadband, some people may be able to put it on a CD for you.
The copyright laws are something that quite a few people are worried about. One of the main ways of getting around them is the fact that the name will be changed, so it'll be Rebirth of the Federation, or something along those lines. (Apparently there is another BOTF2 project somewhere out there called this, but our version is the closest to completion... )
We don't really think there is a problem though, bacause the game has been in development for 11 months or so now, and they haven't made any sort of legal challenge or whatever. Several games websites have gotten wind of the game as well, so surely Activision's lawyers would have gotten wind of it by now?!
Seems they either haven't, or don't care though. Fingers crossed, it'll work out alright. SOMEONE has to make this game, and if Activision can't be bothered to do it themselves, we'll take it on ourselves and rub their noses in it!
Game requirements are extremely low, so there is no need to worry about. If you were able to play BOTF on your computer, BOTF2 will also work on it.
I think Gavin (The lead programmer, aka The God Of Programming And All Things Electronic ) is aiming at around a 300Mhz processor or so. Most computers can handle that incredible speed.
He's primarily building it for a Windows XP system, but will try to make it compatible with older versions of Windows. I haven't got a clue about other Systems, but I doubt these will be compatible with it.
Hope that answers your questions, and welcome to the site!
Let me/us know if you want to know anything else about the game. I'd reccommend you read the TWAAO thread (Things We All Agree On) It's a hefty read, and a little outdated, but it contains most of the info you need to know about the game.
Oh, if you want a taster of the game, I can send you Iwulff's database for the game (The Official Help System)
Let me know your email addy, and i'll send it to you. Send me a PM or email if you want to keep it secret.
My email is grimmedbythereapernew@yahoo.co.uk

Thanks for the reply. If only Activision were this responsive to their customers, they would be making far more money.
The database sounds interesting; please send it to
r.mildiner@uea.ac.uk
Just as a hypothetical... assuming some company did challenge the game, do the copyright laws apply to a completely free release or would you be immune?
From the interest this site has generated, I'd like to think that Activision would think twice before saying anything. They may find their sales of Star Trek games drop considerably after standing in your way
Keep up the good work guys, you're doing a fine job.

I stand corrected and feel reassured that the copyright issue will not be a factor. Thank you Jigalypuff.

I guess even section 31 could not have taken the database to jig (on a deep space mission) earlier! It's amazing what internet makes possible!

I can send you the fourth copy, Mildiner!
It was meant to be the first copy though...
Oh, and if you haven't noticed my second PM Jig, the Database still isn't downloadable.
Does anyone have a copy of the Wallpaper as well? That download isn't working either. I think SOM would be very happy if it could be saved...

Jig, If Lang isn't on the show credits i won't have heard of him . And i've only been a trekkie for a couple of years so i wouldn't have heard about him anyway. Plus when DS9 first aired in '93 i was only one
