blender won`t export to 3ds, there may be a plugin for that i don`t know, it will export to obj which is still a common format, if you get unwrap 3d then you will have no probs exporting, or if you want get polytrans, it exports to just about anything. i have an old copy around somewere, i could "lend it to you"

No it's not necessary at the moment, thanks. I don't even get around designing some nice looking planet animations. (Could be due to an obvious lack of animation skill [which seems more appropriate] or missing time[1] ^^)
[1]Which actually means less an hour a day, and you can't do big jumps then...

Just to resurrect an idea, what about having high-poly ships as a special mod, for people who think their computers will be able to take it?
I mentioned this in another thread, but I thought it would go well here, particularly since it was mentioned here two pages ago...

Sorry, i don't normally keep track of many threads that no one seems to be posting in. I think its a good idea but how "high" are we thinking of going. We're not talking Dream Machine capabilites here are we?

by high poly it would be in the 1500 to 2500 poly range, so you`d need a damn good pc to have large battles, higher poly ships look better as you can add a lot more detail. the ships look so damn good.

Yea! ships made for those with high spec pc's is a great idea i love the way you lot think.
historical battles mod would be great! (it would only need a save game file wont it?)
minor mods - this would also be great having minor races be playable (only the expandable races of course)
I wouldnt mind a mod making the borg in game as well (not playable but as a none playble major which starts life in the delta quad and expands as normal, muc hmore cannon )
Jig that ship is top class im glad we have you on the dev team keep up the good work we love u!
Good thread i praise the creator

the diferences between minor and majors would be that a major is playable, so you need to mod each species you would like to play

Perhaps a mod to save a great battle you personally played, that you can send to others. Even better they can try there hand at winning the same battle... This would require the at least 20 turns be saved from before the battle, the however many turns it takes till the battle is over...
That person in turn could send his/her result to the original player to say compare... Great way to share the game..

I thought the game was gonna save movies of your battles anyway? Or was I wrong about this?
I hope not!
