Well, I thought I'd start this thread, because the other greatest sci-fi shows poll is being clogged with many saying DS9 or TNG, which we established in the fav trek series poll (funny how Ent won then ). So here we go, tell the people what you like besidestrek. BTW, I didnt put any mimiseries up there, so no Dune.
Personally, I'd go for.
1. New BG
2. Babylon 5
3. Farscape - I know many dont particulary like the show, but it has some of the best characters in any sci fi series IMO.
4. QL
5. The outer Limits
6. Andromeda
7. Firefly
8. X-Files - I remember watching these when I was growing up, and they were great, but if I watch one now, they suddenly seem not so great.
9. SG1 - I'll be honest, I've heard its a great show, and I'm sure it is, I just never gave it a chance. Plus I never really liked the movie very much (but I'll admit, I havent watched it since it was first realeased on video).

Though I don't think it is realy Science Fiction, I do think the X-files is the best series of that list. It may even surpass Star Trek..

what about atlantis? Its far better thasn sg1 at the minute!
BSG new all the way, it has everything that trek fails on. Realism in sci fi! Like who wants to watch an episode where janeway and paris have lizard children together for some technobablel I thought that enterprise was excellent for realism, like people dying on the ship, story arcs emotional turmol, archer playing very dirty and killing innocent people for the greater good.
Rant over.

I know Undated, I was gonna mention about Atlantis myself!
Could you change the options so it just says Stargate, Rigel?
I voted for Stargate myself, coz I am really getting adicted to Atlantis. The series just gets better and better. If you didn't like the film Rigel, you might like the series coz they did make some changes, albeit not that many. I certainly think you'll like Atlantis, but a <Little> background info would help Atlantis make more sense. The first show was a bit predictable, but since then...woah!
I wish BSG was also shown over here so I could say my view on it, but alas, nothing on TV yet!
Farscape...wow, what a show, but god it was confusing! I loved the music for the first season, I wasn't fussed on the music from later series. The series also got more confusing as it went on, especially once they killed Zahn off. () I missed that blue alien!
Andromeda, I really liked that series. When Voyager ended over here, it was the only Sci-fi show that was on (Until they showed the then new season of Stargate) Andromeda itself is one of the most beautiful ships i've ever seen, and I really like the idea of AI - That's a concept that seems to have been largely forgotten about in most Sci-fi series (Apart from Data) It can also be fun trying to guess the AI from the Android!
Quantum leap, that was a cool show. I'd fogotten about it to be honest, but it was one of the first sci-fi shows I ever saw (Trek was the first though, my mum loved TOS) It was on at the same time I had my dinner, so I used to grab my dinner and run.
X-files...I never watched that religiously, coz it scared me to be honest, and was on really late. It was only the final season that I saw much of (Coz I was older, braver and went to bed when I wanted to by then! ) I liked usually what I saw of it though.
Babylon 5...I had some tapes of the first season for christmas, and I liked what I saw. I haven't watched them in a while though, so I might dig them out when/if I have some free time.
Outer Limits...never saw it.
And Firefly? Never heard of it.

Sorry Atlantis fans, I cant change the poll options once people started voting.
I copied this summary about firefly: Firefly is set five hundred years from today in a new planetary system after humanity abandons "Earth That Was". Under the leadership of Malcolm Reynolds, a renegade who fought against the new unified central government (the "Alliance"), the crew of the Firefly-class vessel Serenity struggles to survive any way they can. They fly between the border planets to keep away from the Alliance and below its radar. This series was described as a "science fiction western" but is different from other space-based shows as it features no aliens.
Also If you've heard about the new movie Serenity, it based on the series. Cant say if it any good though, because I havent seen it yet.

1) Firefly - not perfect Sci in their Fi but great stories! Great characters! And no sound in space!
2) Farscape - consistent characters; consistent Sci, though far from perfect; good, solid Fi; cool & thought provoking philosophy.
3) Quantum Leap - little-sci, cool-fi; great idea with only one invented, sci-fi assumption: time travel with limits. Very cool.
4) Outer limits - loads of cool ideas and some real stinkers too. You pay your money, you take your chances.
The rest are fantacy shows, IMHO. Good shows, all, but fantacy: very little Sci in the Fi... I'm something of a SciFi snob: the better the Science, the more likely I'll call it "SciFi". I'm sure many won't agree with me on this. But that's MHO. In the end, of course, story trumps adherence to science. That's why my favorite "SciFi" story of all time is the Hitchhiker's Guide.
And, with respect to those who are fans, I realy disliked x-files. There was always two possilble explanations in x-files: psudo-science and complete horse-hockey. They always went for the latter... Always. Not once the former. It's like a who-done-it where, with a choice between the white guy and the black guy, it's always the black guy. It just P.O.ed me... I'll stop ranting.

I too did not vote for BSG(new) because of the blonde (Six)!
I personally like how the characters aren't perfect, they've all got
problems! You root for them to do the right thing, but you are
never sure that they will do it. In most Trek, once we all figured out
what was going on we were pretty sure that the characters would
do the right thing. When they didn't (Pale Moonlight, etc.), it was
really moving. Moore and Co. have taken that and multiplied it
for every character!
I really hope it gets sent overseas later on, it is really worth it!

I would say Star Wars but then again, it's not on the list Maybe some prejudice there? And I don't want any of the uber trekkies trying to eat me alive
So I'll say:
1. Andromeda
2. New BSG (but I've only seen one episode)
3. Firefly (Serenity looks awesome )
