I thought Opterons aren't supposed to be great for games and you have to have an old socket 940 motherboard to fit them - not a socket 939

These are new Opterons which are using the new san diago core like the athlon FX if i remember right. There using the new socket 939 as well hence the popularity.

But to get them as good as the FX's you have to buy overclocking RAM, overclocking Motherboard and a dman good HSF?

Just as a quick poll - Who Thinks Which Is Faster?

AMD FX 57
AMD X2 4800+

If only I had a spare couple of thousand pounds...i'd love to have an Alienware PC - as i'm sure everyone else here on the site would.

Have you guys seen some of the specs of their computers though?

1.5 Tb of memory? 4 Gig of RAM? 8O

Where's a drooling emoticon when you need one?

...

TrekBoy, like i've said before, I don't really understand about computers parts.

If I had to choose between those options, i'd go for the AMD X2 4800+ coz it sounds more powerful. (So go for the other one )

AMD FX 57
AMD X2 4800+

AMD FX 57 = A good bit faster at single threaded apps and games which is about 99% of the games available

AMD X2 4800+ = Slower than an FX 57 at single threaded apps but It will pwn the FX 57 once Dual-Core games and apps are more widely available.

I got to vote for a 3800+

Pair it with a DFI NF4 Ultra-D or SLI or their newer uber-NF4 OCing boards, and some decent RAM (but not even necessary with RAM dividers which dont hurt much at all on the NF4 platform), and you've got a chip like my own 3800+ @ 2.6ghz for a fraction the price.

Actually.. this beauty is stable at 2.75ghz.. sniff.. sniff.. but.. I can't keep it cool with my normal ambient temps without pointing a massive tornado-like fan at the Zalman Reserator watercooling setup I use..

Let it get a little cooler out though, and I'll pop this window open.... Besides, all the cool kids wear leather jackets while on the computer!

There's some useful apps that already take advantage of multi-threading too, like 7zip.. which makes my life much easier. Video editing stuff, too. The rest will come, but isn't so essential anyway.

On another note, the upgrade note, this is recently what I built for my neighbor across the street..

X2 3800+ (310)
2x512 Corsair XMS (99)
250gb SATA2 HD (99)
DFI NF4 SLI Infinity (130)
7800GT (279)
Seasonic S-12 600w PSU (120)
-------------------------------
$1055 + shipping + $60 of my time

Most of that is New Egg pricing, though some were prices I was able to find elsewhere for cheaper at the time (a few days after thanksgiving). He had a case he kept using, along with other stuff, so that was it. It was supposed to be just a working machine (ie, slightly cheaper motherboard and video card), but, well, since he was spending money, he ended up wanting some extra flare.

Pretty good step up from the 2.8ghz Intel he had.. He didnt know it, but he had a "C" revision, he could've got 3.6ghz or so out of it all this time, but.. Not exactly the OCing type or I wouldn't of been building it for him in the first place

whs really.

with my 4800 i can encode avis/render 3d/whatever and play intensive games in full detail at the same time - with absolutely no lag on either. and when the software support increases for dual core processors they will simply kick arse.

For me, if i had to choose between them i'd go forthe VFM. From what i've seen they're both amazingly fast so i'd rather spend £400 than £700 (not that i'm going to anyway)

PCI Express is locked, its an independent speed.. not really to be OCd, no gain in doing it, really. Try RAM dividers to slow down the RAM as you increase HTT, and dont leave the ... other multiplier, whats it called, default is 5x.. drop it to 4 or 3.

I'd think you'd eek out a little bit more, maybe 2ghz, but if you're on air, i dont know. been runnin' water so long, dont even know what to expect from air any more :?

Thats all assuming NF4, NF3 is a different ball game if I remember; might not have the PCIEx and PCI bus things locked. No experience there

Old but solid as a rock for ages.

I have Secondary and Tertiary comps of older specs. They, too, are rock-solid. They're just not turned on at the moment as I don't need them. I play BotF on my Tertiary; it gets alot of use. ;)
