I'll probably get torched for this, but after Janeway, the next captain I like the least is actually Kirk.

Now, I worded that sentence very carefully :p I don't hate him, I just like him the least.

But Janeway could have died in a fire and I wouldn't have cared.

I grew up with TNG and saw Picard as the ideal Captain. His decisions were normally very balanced, while Kirk was often very gung-ho! and it didn't always seem realistic. But, I've only seen a very limited amount of TOS episodes so my opinion could be slanted by the specific episodes I remember.

Meanwhile, Sisko was a cross between Picard and Kirk. While he tried to remain balanced, he definitely had a "no crap tolerated here" attitude that seemed more extreme than Picards, but more tolerable than Kirk's. Once or twice he'd go a bit extreme, but I can see the circumstances (usually).

God, we're such nerds.

That's because he's a better Starfleet officer than Kirk ever was :p He loved her as much as she loved him but tried his damn best to stay cool and impartial while Kirk would have, well, you know....

*edit*
By the way, I just realized that I completely forgot to mention Archer in that comparison. I guess he doesn't really exist.

Reply from my Wife; I did not like Kirk either cause he was a space version of Maryln Monroe, or in more mordern terms, Traci Lords, or even more modern Britney Spears. Can someone say Tramp? Why do you think Dr McCoy had to develop all new cures of Space STD's? Hugh Hefner had nothing on Kirk! He is a puppy in comparsion. (end Wifes reply)...

MY Reply- In Leadership - Yes Kirk was Gung - Ho! But then again he was a true space cowboy! Kirks Diplomacy was meet a new race, shoot first, shoot again, then ask for relations.. Had it not been for Spock, Kirk would have had the whole universe in a huge war! By my count from watching all the TOS shows (hundreds of times), Kirk has a larger body count of his own people then what the borg took out of the whole of the alpha quadrant (Not really but close!) For TOS a better captain would have been Spock or Scotty for sure.

TNG. I cannot touch Picard. Also Riker would have been a good captain, Data hmmm, Possable but still missing the personal intutative touch.

DS9 I would not touch Sisko either. You have to look at where is was, and what he had to deal with. I mean if you had a double threat on your doorstep, you would be "hard and fast" in your descisons as well. Either that or be invaded...

Voyager I gave my thoughts on Janeway, but to think of a better one out of the crew, I would say Chakotay or Brianna.

all those torches..uff heavy load here, well got some left from the last world war no just bad jokin,

why is everyone here getting on kirk`? goddammit he was a space cowboy but he was by far the most likable and "human" to use that slightly overused word in st that I could ever remember of seeing in the shows.

picard? as fas away as the iceberg from the titanic, data? no way, archer..*coughs* kirk at it's worst, sisko, smiles too much for me, whoelse, maybe bel'ana (not brianna....or who do you mean here?) well she's klingon and not much of a captain-type anyway, don't speak of paris&kira..who else do we got? janeway, simple, clean no, riker...aw no again

see, that's why I choose good old kirk as my avatar, the others are too much streamlined st characters for me..

LOL No don't get me wrong. I happened to really like Kirk. that was my spouse talking. (Women are hard at times) Yes is was the true 1st space cowboy. Keep in mind I was watching Trek back in the 60's! So I understand where your coming from, yea my apologizes I mispelled bel'ana, (my bad , spanks hands)....

Just for you Malvoisin; (Back in the day) Kirk was (and by many still is)
"the Heros hero" The John Wayne of the Federation. Always there at the right time, quick thinker, a sure shot, Generally an excellent Captain. The only flaw I saw was in his diplomatic side, (but this was due in part to not as advanced training for his time in that aspect).... and he did happen to lose a lot of ensigns. (Which is why I would not have worn a red shirt).. But I still liked him!!!!

Regardless of what people say. (Even me) He will remain THE ICON of Trek!

You could even give them (he and crew) the title of "The Magnifcent Seven",
So Rest Easy. He is an Immortal in Trek histoy!

His Legacy will always transend all the others. Good bad or indifferent.

(Steps off my soapbox)

When he died in Generations, I literally thought "about time." I was wondering how long Kirk could exist as a character before dying.

I hear that, through some stupid time-travelling-induction-Janeway-related-manuveur-thingy that Shatner "saved" Kirk so that he could keep using him as a main character in his books. I have just one response for that whole mess:
