Thank you, Mattress of Evil. Just glad I could help... Though I'm not sure how beneficial this is will be to BOTF2, i really wanted to pitch in, even in this small way.

I'm not sure when those will be available, Qaz.
Africa@Home and XtremLab I think are closet. PlanetQuest is making progress, but oh so slowly... wouldn't expect that one for months. Orbit@Home seems to be close to launch too though. The BOINC F@H client, eh, I personally think it's done and Pande Group is just sitting on it until they need to roll it out, perhaps along with a multi-threaded version of their current clients or something simultaneously.
I *would* suggest that anybody using F@H use the command-line client.. It does take some CPU time to render those nice big purdy proteins, and it takes up a spot on your system tray. The command line version can be hidden (only way to find it would be by looking in to Task Manager), and in conjuction with FahMon or EMIII, you can get a wealth of real-time info on what your comp is folding with a much lower performance hit on completion time.
If anyone needs help installing the cmd line version... Well, there's three roads one could take.
1) Ask it to install itself as a service. Some times the annoying DOS window wont show up, sometimes, for some reason, it will anyway
2) Find Geek Mojo, hop in to RegEdit, and create your own service registry key, like how I used to do before I found......
3) http://userpages.umbc.edu/~willm1/setup-fold/
I suggest #3.
As far as that laptop story goes -- ouch! Yeah, some laptops weren't really designed to be under 100% thermal load till hell froze over, mine's lucky that it apparently was. Hope it didnt permanently warp your screen or anything
And as far as anyone running it on some of these 500mhz-ish machines I've seen, I'd keep a close eye on if they are meeting their workunit deadlines or not. If they arent, you wont be getting credit, and if they arent you'll need to fall back and tell the client to use 'timeless' workunits. They're all tinker cores, and somewhat less rewarding in terms of points, but there's no deadline on them, so at least one still would get points.
And to Qaz or Mattress I guess: So, are there some people using BOINC? I wasn't going to suggest it, if for no other reason than not to split a small team, but if we have teams set up at other projects, I could set my BOINC machines to those teams. I participate in Predictor,Rosetta, SETI, Einstein, and CPDN, but the lions share goes to the first two (I feel bad looking for random alien soap operas when proteins could cure cancer, etc).

Raiden, i've just had a go at changing my avatar to your new one, and it works fine.
You probably entered the wrong thing into your avatar. Make sure you select the "delete image" checkbox as well as entering the address for your new avatar.
Just in case you're copying the wrong thing, the link you need is:
http://botfii.armadafleetcommand.com/mo ... raiden.jpg
I'm in uni at the moment, but i'll change your folding avatar when I get home.
You DON'T need to worry about file size or avatar size on the site - the site has unlimited bandwidth!
Even though it says your avatar should be 80x80 pixels or whatever it is, my current one is 150x91 pixels.
As a guide, you really should keep your avatar to an absolute maximum of 150x150 pixels though - it stops your posts from being "stretched" out by an unneccesarily large avatar.
You should try to keep the filesize of your avatar as low as possible as well though, since not everyone on the site has a broadband connection - think of the little people.
If you wanted to know, my current avatar is 57kb in size, and Jig's is 127kb. Our avatar for folding@home is currently 87kb.
The site also has limits on the file types that are accepted, so try to keep them in JPG or GIF format - BMP's are NOT accepted. (I learnt that the hard way when I first joined this site ) There are a few other 'acceptable' file types, but I can't remember what they are.
...
CaptRingold, Folding@Home is the ONLY research-type program that I have ever installed. To be honest, other than from what you've said, i've never even heard og BOINC.
I only got into folding at home when I was trawling through google labs.
I noticed there was a program that could be run as part of the google toolbar to do research, so I just installed it. 3 weeks later, google stopped supporting it.
I liked the program though, so I had a look at the Folding@home website.
I first installed the 5.04 Beta version, since it was the latest version. I started seing all DOS screens on my computer though which freaked the hell out of me, so I uninstalled it. I'm not even sure what DOS actually is, other than a black screen with flashing words and icons...
I then installed the 5.03 Graphical client, and i've been happy with it ever since.
Like I said in my earlier post, other than Seti@Home and Folding@Home, i've never heard of any other research-type programs, although I assumed there were others.
I didn't realise you could run more than one program though, because I thought they would conflict on resources?
So what actually is this BOINC thing, CaptRingold?

Raiden, i've changed your avatar for you, like I said I would.
...
Michae1ange1o, sorry to be a pain, but do you have Billy's avatar? It doesn't matter too much, but it would be cool if I could add his into the group avatar properly...

Yeah, Google and F@H sort of mutually agreed that the google support wasn't beneficial to anyone any more. It was restricted to 'tinker' cores and couldn't be updated to do more recent science, and it was introduced at a time when F@H had a really small user base. Now it's so massive that losing the people that used Google's toolbar will hardly effect them, and hopefully most that used to run it will come over just as you did. You're doing a lot more 'science' now with Stanfords own client
BOINC though avoid resources conflicts by splitting time. Say you've got two projects running on one computer; it'll run one for a couple hours, then stop it, unload it from memory, and run the other for a couple hours.
But.. http://folding.stanford.edu/papers.html I don't know of any other project that can touch that with a six foot stick! Indeed, I've seen a couple projects pop up that have basically said "So long and thanks for all the CPU time. Sorry, but no one has turned out to be interested in our data, but.. we'll keep trying!" So what, ten centuries of wasted CPU time or something? At the same time, F@H publishes papers and gets stuff done. w007 for them!

Zahadoom, I would absolutely LOVE to be able to put in a great avatar like yours - have you got the file itself, or have you simply linked to it from another site?
If it's linked, I might not be able to add it in.
If you do have it though, don't worry about the file type, just send it to me and i'll see what I can do - and fingers crossed.
...
Ringold, thanks for explaining BOINC to us - to be honest, whilst all those other programs are worthy causes, I personally would prefer to just stick with just folding@home.
Don't get me wrong, i'll check them out, but I feel like I am really contributing something with the folding client.
Having it constantly switch between different programs seems a bit wasteful really, and I just prefer to concentrate on one thing at at time.
You never know though, maybe i'll change my mind one day.
I had noticed all the papers and stuff that the folding@home people produce - that's probably why I feel like I really am really contributing something, and that all my processor time isn't simply being lost and forgotten on some website that no-one ever uses.

The work units you get are totally random - sometimes you'll get extreme amounts, like 250 or 12,500, but usually you'll get ones that are mid-range.
I've done plenty of 500-frame ones myself, Billy so don't worry about it.
Also, if it seems like you are folding the exact same protein that you've done before - it ISN'T a mistake - you ARE folding the same protein, but it is being folded under slightly different conditions.
The folding@home program is extremely powerful, and whilst mistakes can happen, they are rare.
...
TrekBoy, i'm hoping the same thing myself!
228/250 frames and counting...
...
Zahadoom, Billy...you guys might wanna see the new avatar...

...No I haven't, Jig.
Europekid's is the still of the Defiant, and Raiden's is the martial arts guy - just as their avatars here on the site are.
They haven't noticed anything wrong with it themselves...
...
Zahadoom, I haven't put your name on your avatar for obvious reasons. Having to put your name on 83 frames is a LOT of work!
It would probably spoil it as well...
...
Silvercliff, send us your new avatar mate! It looks cool!
...
I'm planning on adding some lightning to my avatar - i've already made it, but something isn't quite right about it. I'm not sure what that is yet...
