Well, I'm a 4th year Anthropology student studying pretty far away from the rest of you guys at the University of Florida. As long as I keep my grades up, I plan on attending grad school for forensics in a year or so.

So dont spit, and wear a hair net at your crime scenes people, or we'll getcha.

Florida, you lucky I assume Grade School is like the Grades in America - personnaly i ifnd the yearly system used in the UK a lot easier to understand

In my old schools, you had the Reception, and years 1 and 2 in Primary school (Although we didn't call them years, we called them Reception, Middles, and Tops)

Then we have years 3-6 in the Juniors, and years 7-11 in the Comprehensive, (High school) plus years 12 and 13 if your school is lucky enough to also have a sixth form, (Like mine) otherwise you go to a sixth-form college to do your A-levels.

You then go on to University. (Should you want to and have the grades)

How is it done in America?

Ok, well over here there are 12 different grades kids have to go through to get their High School diploma. Unless you attend a private school, the 12 different grades are divided among 3 different schools: Grade/Elementary school, grades 1-5, Middle school, grades 6-8, and High school, grades 9-12. You start 1st grade about 6-7, and graduate 12th at about 17-18, as long as you're not held back (although I did have a girl in my graduating class who was about 3 weeks away from her 21st birthday when we graduated). Then, if you want, you can go to a university/college. There are two undergraduate degrees your AA, which you can get after two years, which is not a specialized degree, and your BA, which you get after another 2 years, which is a specialized degree (specialized meaning that it's a degree in Chem, Physics, Psychology, Anthropology, etc...) (I'm in my second year for getting my BA right now). Then, if you want, (and have the time/money/grades) you can go onto graduate school, (or as I put it in my last post, grad school) and study to most likely get a PHD, and become a doctor/professor of some sort. Grad school can last anywhere from 1-4 years. To become any type of doctor, I know you need four years of grad school, on top of al the other schooling.

So there ya go. Clear it up at all?

i think most countries have the same 12 grades of schooling (not counting kindergarten or pre-school).

in australia we have the same sorta setup, broken into three different schools. kindy, 1st and 2nd is infants, 3rd - 6th is primary, and 7th to 12th is high school.

it also appears i'm the old man of these boards. i left uni a decade ago...

Over here, you get different kinds of Degrees, based on the course you took.

You can get a BSc, (Bachelor of Science) BA (Bacehlor of Arts) and so on at 'ordinary' degree level. Depending on how well you do/the difficulty of your course, you can also get an Honours (Hons) 'rating' as well.

The course that I am doing is BSc (Hons) Environmental Health.

After completing a degree, you can then go on to do a Masters course. Obviously, that's even harder than a degree, and I don't think i'll be doing one just yet...

If you complete a Masters course, you get an MSc, (Master of Sciences) Ma (Master of the Arts) and son on.

I don't totally understand the system myself, so please don't ask any questions, this is about all I know of it. I'll let you know more in three years time when/if I complete my course.

in the uk u get 2 types of degree, useful and useless, my gf does history of art and bysantine studies...

i've got mates who between them did media studies, philosophy (!), and literature. all three of them have nice degrees hanging on their walls with no job prospects.

i mean philosophy ffs! what a waste of four years that is. it just gives you the ability to sit around and have deep and meaningful thoughts about being unemployed.

israel has an interesting system over there u can chose when to enroll your child 4 or 5, if the fail then they can just stay in year 1.

well im a third year geology student at adelaide uni here in austlalia.

i would have loved to of done astrophysics, but maths was ruined for me by my year 11 maths teacher.

I'm due to go back for the 2nd year of my psychology course at Warwick Uni in a couple of weeks...had aover 2 months off, and I'm gonna miss my bed!

right im back it took a couple of days but now im at manchester and i managed to get connected.

I know what you mean. I'm now into my 4th year at Georgia Tech, and we have one of the better CS programs in the U.S. I had a decent amout of experience coming in, but my confidence got crushed pretty hard when confronted with some of the really hardcore CS guys. However, 3 years later, I've found that a lot of them have turned out to be losers, and I find myself generally more knowledgable (and personable) than many of them. School is what you make of it, and if you're willing to work hard, you'll learn a lot. I've found that the most valuable knowledge I've gained has been from learning on my own time rather than studying for classes.

I came out from a Biochem degree, hoping to pursue a course in BioInformatics, however nearing the end i came to realise that i just didn't have to right background to take it on board.

Which is why i decided to take an MSC in CS the hopefully find someone kind enough to let me do a PhD in BioInformatics.

I've just came to realise this may be harder then i thought, however nothing below it really applies to what i want to do in the future, IT though good, isn't good enough for me to get on a later BioInformatics course.

Anyway i didn't pick CS because it was easy, i chose it because its and area of great Interest, completely new and i can hopefully tie in some former Biochem work into my Dissertation later on, which i've always hoped to do.

But like i said to some students the other day, ask me again come Christmas
