You only show up once you've completed a work unit - once you've sent your results back, and they have been processed on the site. (This is done once an hour, so you may have to wait up to an hour after completing a unit before your name shows up)
Billy, here you go:

WU's have a set point score, set in theory by how long a reference computer in their labs took to do it, but I think they round it depending on how they feel.
There's 600 point Gromacs uber-units that're what we all hope to get a load of. As I understand it, both CPUs do Gromacs okay, but AMD eats Tinkers for lunch compared to Intel (unfortunately their arent many and those that do exist are small points, unless you run timeless WUs, but those are lower points), but Intel gets 'QMD' WU that AMD can't.
Everybody just about uses Intel's compiler, and Intel's compiler refuses to optimize in a way that'll let F@H use SSE2 correctly on AMD chips (if it happens there you know it happens other places), and it's one of the things AMD is suing over in the anti-trust case..
I'd suggest ...http://home.comcast.net/~wxdude1/emsite/index.html
If it doesnt tell you, then its not something you need to know! You have to check for updates every now and then though, 'cause F@H releases new projects from time to time and EMI can't read it with old records.
I'm no pro Matress, but thanks I've just played with it for a real, real long time. I've been having problems with BOINC on one particular computer, a dual AthlonMP 2400 system, so instead of babying it along forever, once its current work finishes (3 days), it'll be folding for you guys.
Like you said to others too, it's not about getting a billion WU done a month. All the big teams (HardOCP especially, and its nearly #1!!) arent built upon 10 key members that have 200-computer corporate farms behind them, they're built on 1000 average joes with average computers that are only on 10 hours a day, maybe even less. Even a 1.2ghz AMD Thunderbird system I had, before it croaked, I had running, and felt it was worth it. And if I weren't so lazy to put it back together, it'd still be running today

Some bigger WUs can take several days 8O
I first tried to do normal WU on my 1.2ghz t-bird, and I think because I was forcing various things on it and some fluke of luck, it got a 600pt wu. After two weeks, I just had it give up

I must admit i havent read the whole thread but if im right then ur using SeTi@home where you download work units.
If so then u can check my unit load and timings by looking at seti home page under the group called "thegamingunion".
Tho i aint done any for a year or two.
*Edit*
Its not Seti@home so post is kinda pointless unless theres talk of seti in here as well as the protiend folding thing the rest of you guys are doing.

I suppose I should really set up a list of similar programs - such as the Seti one - for people that are interested.
I asked Jig (Before I set this thread up) whether he thought it was a good idea to do so, but he never responded on that particular point.
If it keeps you happy Skeeter, i'll do that tonight.
I'll add your picture into the avatar as well, CaptRingold.
No sign of an email from you yet, Michae1ange1o - i'm guessing that means you haven't got the avatar files anymore...?
*Edit - i've added you to the avatar CaptRingold *

It's so important you posted twice!
I don't mind you sending me either one - if you want me to add the animated version of your avatar then send me the animated file. If you want a non-moving one like those currently displayed, then I can just copy-and-paste your avatar direct from here, as i've done with everyone else's (Plus adding their name in with MS Paint )
I think Billy would like his to be animated though, so if you could send me the file for that, it would help. It's in .GIF format, right?
It isn't crucial that it is, but it makes my life easier. Besides, there aren't many other file types supported on the site.
...
Zahadoom, what would you like for your avatar? I could try putting your current one in if it was in .GIF format...
Na, you probably wouldn't be able to get a good quality GIF of that. Send me any pictures you like instead.

To work faster, all you can do is pretty much follow the guides in my first few posts in this thread.
The best way is to make sure that you set CPU usage to 100%. This ensures that ALL processor cycles that aren't being used by another program are used by folding@home.
Other than that though, there isn't anything more I can tell you. You could try leaving it running overnight or something, if you don't mind using the electricity...or you could set it so you run smaller/less complex work units by NOT clicking the "Allow receipt of work assignments and return of results greater then 5Mb in size" on the connection tab of the configuration settings.
This of course means that the work units are easier, so you get les points for them. It's your choice.
Oh, and the work unit that I said was taking for ever to complete is now on 100/250 frames.

I read somewhere that the seti stuff was going to stop with this.

Well I just thought it might be a good idea if there was a list for people who might be interested in similar programs.
The Seti one is actually the only other one that I know of, but people in the know would be able to add to the list.
Afterall, they are all helping research in one way or another, whether it's for the purposes of Cancer research, or searching for ET.

Ok then, see the red cog icon in the taskbar? (Bottom right-hand corner of the screen)
Right-click on this, then click on "configure..."
The connection tab is the second tab along (At the top of the configurations page)
The checkbox that you want to look at is at the bottom of this screen.

As far as leaving the comp on over night, I look at it this way myself..
With the monitor/LCD off, and speakers, computer is.. what, basically like a bright lightbulb being left on? Not too horrible; the heat is more annoying in some cases
As far as making in run faster, yeah, smaller units will go quicker (sometimes!), but you will get less 'points per day', or ppd. If you've got enough RAM (check periodically if its not being filled up, but 512 should be enough), large workunits pay for themselves.. a 600 point gromacs might take days to do, but 600 points over two days or 90 or 140 points a day with a smaller tinker WU or something?
About SETI, the program isn't ending, it's just going to BOINC, a new multi-project platform. New things are being added all the time, off the top of my head...
Predictor@Home (inferior to F@H IMHO, but the same principle)
SETI@Home
Climate Prediction@Home
FightAIDS@Home (linux only, Windows this month)
LHC@Home (particle accelerator design for CERN)
Rosetta@Home (helps refine the theoretical models that F@H and such use, indirectly making F@H more efficient)
Einstein@Home (gravity wave and funky physics research)
uFluids@Home (satellite propellant research)
There's also XtremLab, PrimeGrid, SZTAKI Grid, BURP (distributed image rendering, uh, not really science...), though not as familiar with those. Africa@Home will come soon doing malaria research, Orbit@Home tracking near-earth objects, and PlanetQuest@Home, which I'm looking forward to, 'cause if you're computer finds a planet, you get cited as its discoverer in future texts.
But the BOINC client is, for the moment, in my opinion, too much fuss. IMHO, it's Beta quality, just barely. I have to keep an eye on my systems running it Every. Single. Day. F@H is much friendlier -- set it and forget it
So yeah, just mentioned that just to throw it out there, by no way to be an endorsement.... only reason I'm running it is.. well.. I got bored with everything else, for the most part
F@H is adding a BOINC client too, so soon as that happens, I'll be right back to supporting mainly F@H anyways! Their client's been in beta virtually done for weeks now, they're just waiting for some good opportunity to announce it.

Qaz, if you're getting those options, then you're either clicking the wrong thing, folding@home isn't actually running, or you've got a different version of the program to me.
Are you running it on a Windows computer? Have you got Windows XP? Folding@home graphical client? Folding@home 5.03?
If you've got all these, then it should be working the same as mine, so you should be able to change the settings. If you have anything different though, that might explain why you can't find the options.
Thinking about it though, where did you enter the group number? You must have entered it somewhere for your points to be able to go to our group.
Try to find that screen again, then look for the connection tab.

Ah...you have the non-nonsense version, not the graphical client.
You don't see all the information and stuff that we do - which is why your icon is in a different place and you get different options.
I'm sorry, but I can't help you with that. I downloaded the graphical client, but I couldn't get it to work properly, and it confused the hell out of me.
I uninstalled it and downloaded the graphical client, and it's worked fine ever since.
Can you help him CaptRingold?
