ok i was sent a vulcan d`kyr class ship, and while it`s a nice model it also
weighs in at 2700 odd polys, i remade it and while still untextured it is onlr 450 odd polys.
the point being that you can make a nice ship without going mad on the poly count

I'd love to see a 2700 poly ship on my computer...namely coz I wouldn't...
That'll be a great ship once it has textures though!
...
For the planets, we decided that Terran, (M class) and Oceanic planets would provide you with a Deuterium bonus, but an Oceanic planet would have a higher bonus.
A Gas Giant would provide a much higher bonus than an Oceanic planet, and we decided the Demon class would provide you with the most Deuterium (Around double or triple that of a Gas Giant I think) but there would only be 1 or 2 per Quadrant.
To tell you the truth, I think this is a really pathetic amount - there's almost no point in having them since they are so few - but we know they are extremely rare since Voyager is the first time they are even mentioned.
One thing I can't remember though Jig, is will we need to build some sort of 'harvesting' structure before the Deuterium is collected? Like you need a Dilithium refinery before you collect Dilithium from a system.
If it hasn't been thought of, then I think it should be something that is at least considered.

Ok. So, I made and gave the D'kyr to jigalypuff. I have a few things to say about it.
1) the file I sent contained not one model (of the D'kyr) but six models: D'kyr, Surak, Sh'ran, the future vulcan cruiser, two vulcan ships of my own design and a female body. All these together are 2856 polys.
2) The D'kyr by itself is 328 polys. So if the pairing process left 450 polys, not all the geometry from the other models were removed. If you want, I can send the models to you as single files. In fact, why don't I do that right now.
3) All the models in that file (including the female body) and in all the other files I sent you are to scale to each other. The scale is: one internal unit = one meter. As such, I'm not really suprised it was hard to separate the geometry out: many 3D programs have difficulties with coordinates of large numbers. This is why I sent the orignal .wings files... Though you'll have to change the viewing preferences in Wings3D to see the files properly.
4) Glad to hear y'all like the model.

am I the only one generous with polygons?
Gavin said it can go up to 9000, but once it gets to that point its bad
I cant keep anything below 1000, unless its a small scoutship with no engineering section. Even then I sometimes get carried away

Oh right, here you are then...
Ok, the best one I could find with colour was this - it might only be a diagram, but it's a start:
Try copying this into your browser as well:
http://mrshadow.hotmail.ru/nv-01_.jpg
(Don't bother clicking it - it links to somewhere else for some reason. Just copy and paste it)
Google in it's infinite wisdom has failed me on this one.

There are a couple of pictures at memory alpha here,
http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Intrepid_%28Earth%29
seem quite good.

Jig, check out http://www.ditl.org. Click on "other ships" along the top of the screen, (not Federation ships as it's pre-federation). Under H for Human, there are some big, clear pics of the Intrepid, as well as just about every ship you'll ever need pics of.

nearly finished the conostoga class, i realize this is a colony ship but the feds need 3 minimum for the enterprise era, their colony ship will be the dx-100.
just need to add some more detail to the hull so i can get some nice textures for her once finished she weighs in at 750 odd polys, i got carried away

If you would like a generic hull paneling texture to blend into your ships let me know, as im good with generic hull plating textures that u can add to textures.

Wow, that is an unusual ship! I've never seen anything like that before...
Although i'm wondering if it gave a little inspiration to the Andor class...?
Both ships are unusually long afterall, and they are both in existance because of the same race...

So the Remora class is in then? (That's the ship with the wierd flap things - second from the top left) I don't know it by any other name, if it has one.
I read that there was gonna be pretty much every class of ship in the game, but I didn't realise that was going to be litteral!
The Star Empire will be pleased by this news...

What is the average polycount for the ships?
I advise to stay around 1500 polys, as even BOTF with it's old grapships and low-poly ships have problems with many ship and torps and all...

Remember, that botf only had software-rendering. (I know about the hades-patch, but since it doesn't work with new models I can't use it.)
I agree in not using more than 2k polys since the game should run on relatively old hardware as well. (Besides I don't care unless I won't have problems with high-res models, but of course this game is dedicated to everyone and not only doom3-capable machines )

the average poly count for my ships is between 500 and 900, i usually make a high poly model render it and use that as a texture map for a low poly model.

I used to do that, but I cant be arsed anymore. It takes too long to make a one million polygon model, then use it as a texture for a one thousand polygon model...
