Hey all, i ben away for a couple of months and havent been able to check up on the site. Was just wondering what ive missed, rather than looking through 2 months of posts i thought id start this thread, maybe it can be of use to others as well.
Few basic things i was wondering, how complete is the game? is there a ETA for release, is there a demo? any new screens? etc etc
Cheers Guys!

But the new game is being made by jig and is looking good
But MOE tell you in more detail like the godlike welshman he is

Hehe, godlike Welshman here to explain it all!
I don't know what you remember about the project Carott, but Billy is right. Gavin has dissappeared off the face of the Planet so we had to start programming the game from scratch.
jigalypuff is now the lead programmer, and so far he's completed the in-game camera and is working on implementing the various screens (Start Screen, and Intel screens are complete, Ships info screen is under construction) and some of the AI has been done.
Release date is 2007, but we can't give anything more than that coz we don't know ourselves and don't want to restrict it to the detriment of the game.
To make things better, MStrobel is making a second version of the game. His game is much nearer completion, although it was not originally designed as a BOTF2 game. He is currently working to convert and update it into a Star Trek game.
There's a downloadable demo available in the general chat forum, just look for the "Supremacy" thread. It has some pretty heavy computer requirements though, and i'm NOT talking specs here.
We're gonna implement much of the same stuff in the two games (Screens, text, etc.) but we're using MStrobels game as more of a guinea-pig for the game. Jig's game will be the "official" BOTF2, although this doesn't mean that MStrobel's game isn't gonna be any good. The only way that it will be lacking is that it won't have a comabt system - which is gonna take a long time to program.

Just as an idea how about we have a sorta completion progress bar somewhere showing from jig's pov how far the team's come. possibly with dates and little annotations to explain certain points?
How does this sound?

i dont think setting massive dealines for a fan based project is a good idea but as for a progress thread or something its just gonna get posted in the New Begings site anyway i think if you give a fan bassed project dealines it will lead to what happend last time with people demanding things and what happens if jig carnt make alot of the dealines coz of his personal life whihc is what i would expect so unless the dealines were very slack i dont know if that would help might just add more pressure

That's precisely why the release date is "2007", rather then "January 1st 2007 at 00.01am ".
The moment we put a deadline on it, we're all put under pressure, and the moment someone's personal life gets in the way, the project gets held back.
Whilst I understand what you're saying, Chris, it would simply detrimental to the progress of the game. And what happens if Jig suddenly figures out a new way of programming something or we have a new idea? We would have to lower the progress bar then to accomodate this. People might misinterpret the change, even if we post about it.
The truth of the matter is that not everyone visits the site everyday or reads every post like me...*ahem*
People will likely see that progress has been held back, will miss the posts, and assume the game isn't coming out or something.
Don't worry, we'll release screenies and stuff as time goes by, so please, just be patient. And if you want more info - if ANYONE wants more info - feel free to PM or email me. I'll have plenty of time for people over summer, () and surely people know how much detail I put into my posts by now...

ahhh guys thats very sad to hear, we were so close before, i have to say a big thanks to all those who have decided to take the torch, alot of people in this community owe you. To speed things up, couldnt we "borrow" some of the ship models used in bridge commander? theres a large community in that game and sure the in game battle screen would be a automated version of that games battles? Im sure alot of BC programmers and modellers would love to get involved in a project like this, after all the more people and the more ideas and models the quicker it will get done.
What do you guys think about that?

Well, contrary to what MOE says, a 3D combat system is planned for my incarnation of BOTF2 (Star Trek: Supremacy). However, I'm holding off on working on it until the rest of the game is in place. That way, I can focus all of my attention on combat and occasional bugfixes. But that's probably at least a year and a half away. I'll take all the help I can get when the time comes, though.

Eh? You're planning one, Mike? You didn't tell me, you just said you were making "improvements"...
...Your current incarnation of the game doesn't have one, anyway.

I guess I was a bit unclear on the Supremacy vs. Star Trek: Supremacy thing, Mattress. ST:Supremacy isn't a modification, it's a new game based loosely on the code base from the original Supremacy game. I actually created an empty workspace for the game without any source code in it at all, and I have begun rewriting the foundation from scratch, occasionally copying and refactoring code from the original Supremacy game as needed. But make no mistake, ST:Supremacy is being built from the ground up to fully comply with the BOTF2 specification written by dafedz, iwulff, yourself, et al.
Combat will initially work the same way it did in Supremacy. That means it's equivalent to hitting "Auto" in the original BOTF. I see no point in creating a 2D battle system as a stand-in, since it would eventually get scrapped anyway. I just want to finish the bulk of the game before I tackle 3D combat, as I have little experience in that area, and I will want to focus all of my attention on it once I've started. Once the main game is done, the only subsequent releases will be bugfixes until I finish the 3D tactical combat system. Combat could take another year or more to finish, so I think you'd agree it would be better to have a functional game in place earlier rather than have to wait that much longer .

That's what I meant by Supremacy not having a combat system...

Here you go, Leafan.
Please read the first post before downloading it, and make sure you install the four Windows components that Mike has listed before attempting to install it.
Trust me, I know from experience that it won't work without them.
When you try to play the game, make sure that your internet connection is open as well. The game automatically downloads components whilst you load the game up/play each turn, which is why the download is so incredibly small.

Thanks Matress, but it won't work for me because I don't have an internet connection at home. I use the net at work only. Darn.
Thanks anyway.
Leafan.

I don't, but we've already got a mention on there.

Klingon software is not 'released'. It 'escapes', leaving a bloody trail of designers and quality assurance personnel in its wake.

But that's just the Klingon part. The Romulan section would simply disappear...
