According to the cartoon plots they are from a planet called Cybertron but the planet is getting sucked into a black hole of some sort and they are searching the galaxy for a way to save their planet. They then some how end up on earth and the Autobots (good guys... bots, trying to save Earth and Cybertron) end up fighting the Decepticons (evil bots, trying to defeat Austobots and conquer Cybertron, as well as Earth). Thats Transformers in a nut shell.
