Now, I dont do this normally, but I'm asking you all for your opinion for something NOT botf2 related..
Two weeks ago, I was talking with my friend, and I challenged him to a "modeling duel". We each had two weeks to create the best three dimensional phone. There were few rules, Basically the only one was that we had to make all models ourselves.
Now, the reason im posting this is that we both agreed to get judges. I chose my judges to be the guys at BOTF2, and he chose MySpace.
We both agreed not to tell anyone whose is whose until the judging has ended.
So that means I'm not telling you which one is mine. Please vote.
click on the images to bring them up in their large full resolution glory.
Phone A:
Phone B:
(im not voting until the end either, so you cant tell which one is mine from the opening vote)

Well there both ok.
Phone 1 has a nice scene in the background. But the phone itself i am not too keen on. 1st is the chrome used. I hate it. It would have been better to make the surface reflective and glosy instead of using a chrome like texture.
The lack of shadowing of the phone on the table and the area shadows around the phone itself such as keys etc is disapointing. Poly mesh wise its smooth and simple. Tho i dont like the design at all.
Phone 2 is better in subject matter as its a mobile and therefore more common on the eye these days. Mesh wise its rather nice. But texturing/colouring wise it could have been alot better. The glass display is not beveled into the phone but rather extruded out of the phone which isnt the norm.
The buttons on the mobile, although nice, lack numbers and signs. I like this phone more due to shadows used in the scene compared to a lack of shadows on previous phone. Also reflections and gloss is done well compared to previous phone. The enviroment of the mobile phone is poor tho, a stone floor, a poor modeled table for the phone and what looks like one of them baulbled vibrators women use right next to the phone is worrying lol. (the blue thing)
About the shadows. The large shadow cast is too strong. It could have been fainter and softer.
Overall i give phone 1
looks - 3/5
mesh 3/5
enviroment 5/5
effect use 2/5
Total 2.5/5
Overall i give phone 2
looks - 4/5
mesh 4/5
enviroment 2/5
effect use 4/5
Total 4/5
I vote mobile phone (phone 2).

I hope neither of you is hoping for a career at ILM . I voted for #2 strictly on the basis that #1 should have a rotary dial (or buttons arranged in a rotary fashion).

comments are great.
The contest officially ends today, although he is complaining that it ended yesterday. If things go my way, you should see some nicer images soon. Though if he says no, and I lose the argument, you'll get to see it anyway after the voting ends

Had to have a go myself and i did this in a bath towel as i got out the bath when i started. :p
So after some hours like 3 i think. And alot of poly manipulation and fine tuning of the mesh (i hate curves) i got a pre alpha view of my mobile phone model.
Very unfinished i know but meh.
Btw my fingers are stiff cos of doing this.
---
Based off this phone i found on the net.
And here's my work in progress. (doubt ill finish it tho lol)

tsk skeeter, tsk.
private contest (yours looks good though) - we may make it widespread later (we already challenged eachother again).
We dont use templates/blueprints either, all done freestyle.
I want to show you all the real final image that I just rendered... its so much better then my 'official' image.

I must admit, both versions have some pretty sweet reflections. I don't know of too many metal phones like that, though. But it's still awesome technique.

Nem,
I'm embarrassed. I picked the wrong one! Your correct though, had you posted this one, I would have voted for it! Even my wife prefers this latest one! (that should tell you something) lol
Excellent job though!

you shouldnt be - we wanted a fair contest.
The next competition we are doing, the theme is 'chair'. This is going to be a very... different... competition as the phone, since were going all out, and giving each other twice as long to compete (a month instead of 2 weeks)

@Azhdeen - it was supposed to be an abstract/realistic mix, focusing more on the reflectiveness to add realism.
