(if you have trouble with clicking and reading on the link above start with this - it is about something new for the Directors Edition of the film.)

In 1979, a version of "Star Trek:The Motion Picture" was released to cinema. This version, however, didn't quite fit together like director Robert Wise had intended. Even though it soon became a hit film, viewers were left with similar impressions: it was like a big budget episode that looked good and had a great soundtrack, but was ultimately lacking in pacing and had a weak denouement.
Part of the problem was production related: the film had a release date set in stone months in advance so, ready or not, it had to be delivered to theaters at its appointed time. One complication was special-effects related. Early test shots were not successful and the whole process was painstakingly slow.

In the late '90s, a team of producers put together a package detailing how they could go in and, with the director's cooperation, enhance the film's FX, sound, and editing. The creative team, headed by David C. Fein, Michael Matessino and Daren R. Dochterman, were responsible for the contents of the "Director's Edition," right down to contributing bonus materials for the two-disc DVD release.

Many stories have been told about the making of the movie, but we now have a comprehensive account of the making of the "Director's Edition," from the three people who know it best. Now, for your enjoyment, please sit back and listen, or watch and listen, to our exclusive podcast for "Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director's Edition."
