It was to be powered by methane. It turned out that the mass was sufficient to initiate nuclear fusion in the core.

Couldn't it be a new kind of weapon by species 8472, which simply surrounds all kind of matter with a bio-organic compound, designed to crush the Borg???
This would probably be some kind of field testing...
I am sure that not even a Borg could live INSIDE such a thing! Remember the scene from "First Contact", where the Borg's biological parts were consumed by a gas /coolant I don't remember at the moment...
