Well, you may have just noticed that we now have a new button on the left bar. Yes, thats right, we now have a chat room. To be more specific, its an IRC channel.

What that means is that we can now talk easier. And faster. W00t.

We're hosted at freenode, so you can connect though:

irc.freenode.net
#botf2

Basically all the rules that apply on the forums are on the channel, just use your brain and we wont have any problems.

If you don't have an IRC client (Pidgin, mIRC, X-Chat, etc) you can use the handy Java client I just uploaded. Thats the "Chat" link on the left bar. You don't even have to type anything in except your username.

Comments, suggestions? Let me know.

good job, works fine.

Hope we get a lot of folks joining there, namely the new ones ;)

http://startrekgames.cz/bote_fi.html ?

Besides being czech, it was two weeks ago but what on earth do the screenies mean? jig, I guess we really have to take those gavin screens down from our gallery coppermine site .. :)

I have no clue. The title of the page says Birth of the Empires, but they have screenshots from my game, including a couple mockups, and some from Gavin's game, but none that actually came from BotE. :?

Post subject:  Re: BOTF2 Chat

just thinkin, sir p. made some kind of (german) "trailer" for the new alpha4, maybe you can also add this to the news, and a small screenie from the video (basically looking over sir p.'s shoulder while he is "playing" the game ;)). In order for not-german-speaking people not to get confused, a short remark in the headline regarding the language should be enough.

Post subject:  Re: BOTF2 Chat

I was going to do that Mal, but Jig has posted a news item about a scam attack via the PM system. I thought it was best to leave that at the top for the time being.

I've instead added the link into a new 'Official Media' folder in the downloads section. Some people will at least know about the trailer then.

I could not get the trailer to play but I am sure it is great. I am having the same problem with the Ferengi matting dance video.

Ok, I uploaded it to my photobucket account for you Kenneth. I just hope tons of people don't watch it this way as it'll wipe out my download limit otherwise. :(

DON'T click on the fulscreen button as that seems to crash IE - although that might just be my computer...

there's no sound in it for bandwidth reasons but rest assured kenneth, most will be very familiar especially to you in alpha4 ;).

w00t, I'm glad someone will be making use of Kenneth's voice recordings. Sadly, I haven't gotten around to that yet.

Post subject:  Re: BOTF2 Chat

I haven't heard them myself but sir p. said something about a "new audio voice" and since I don't think he meant himself I'm pretty sure he brought those ones in. I hope jig has unlimited bandwidth cause u know...

anyway speaking of bandwidth, sir p. did make some slight overuse of it in the trailer, I mean 1280x1024 resolution at 686 kbps is a bit..fat! ;)

scaling it down to 640x512 and reducing bitrate to 560-600 wouldn't have much adversely affected quality I think :).

Thanks, I will check it out as soon as I get home.

BTW, Mike has a much better voice than I do. Let's hope he will record more when and if it is needed.

Back on topic...

FYI - Anyone who goes into the chat room and sees me there - if it says Nemitor, it means I'm there (most of the time).

If you enter the room, I will not know.

But if you say something (like a simple Hello), I will know, and will respond.

Shame there isn't a buzz when someone new enters.

And when people post. I hate it when it goes quiet and i have to keep checking back to see if someone has posted a new message...

at least we don't get posts that are just "Bump"

Post subject:  Re: BOTF2 Chat

don't irc clients like Invision, Sysreset or plain mirc allow for such a "beep" when new messages are written in chan? it's long ago since I was active in irc but I think I can remember about such functions..

Post subject:  Re: BOTF2 Chat

yep, mine lights up. The thing is, that if someone joins, it doesnt do a thing. this is because big rooms have hundreds of people - someones always coming and going.

Malvoisin wrote:

I once suggested we use bit torrent instead of standard downloads to naturally save bandwidth.

We can set up a tracker or just use DHT.

Post subject:  Re: BOTF2 Chat

I've got no problem with that. I've got bittorrent installed and don't mind sharing my connection...just as long as it isn't 24 horus a day. :P

Post subject:  Re: BOTF2 Chat

bittorrent..well, maybe additionally. I'd like to have the standard covered here too however.

anyway for the join events: http://subatomic.evolutionscriptz.com/m ... page&pid=5

type in google: irc "someone joining" and you find hints on how to automatically script a hello message (and therefore lighting up on your tab) to someone joining new!
