Normally I copy and paste a news article, but this time i'm linking to a video. The STEREO twin satellites have mapped the whole surface of the Sun for the first time. If you hadn't guessed it yet, STEREO isn't a single satellite, but is actually a pair. They were sent to help provide data and advanced warning on solar flares, which can affect a whole range of technology on Earth, from communications networks to the power grid. Images have been taken of the sun before, but these could only ever be of the side facing the Earth. But STEREO was launched as a pair, with one on each side of the Sun, allowing simultaneous pictures to be taken from both sides. These photos were then spliced together to make a panoramic view, and then made into an animation that allows the sun to be viewed from any angle for the first time.
