A group of scientists has managed to send a message using neutrinos for the first time:

Compared to sound or electromagnetic waves (including light) this has many advantages as neutrinos can travel through almost anything (including whole planets!). Of course, practical applications are a bit far into the future yet, but it looks promising.

For example, a neutrino signal could travel thought a very intense storm without distortions. I remember an episode in TNG where La Forge was trapped in the surface of a planet along with a Romulan and in the end managed to send a signal using neutrons instead of regular E/M waves. Of course a neutron is very different from a neutrino (the former is a hadron the latter a lepton) but the idea is similar :cool:

Science along with Star Trek never fails to impress me :)

Very Cool.

I would have responded sooner but I was trying to do it with neutrinos.

Well, my neutrino detector is down at the moment, so in any case I wouldn't have received the message :razz:

Talking about neutrinos, there was a paper out today by the same team (called Opera) who a few months back said that they found superluminal neutrinos, thus violating Special Relativity. Apparently, there was some error due to a faulty connection in the GPS system used to measure the time and the new result is now consistent with Relativity :romulan: :
Quote:
dt=0.3 plus/minus 4 plus/minus 9 ns
where dt is the difference of the observed and the expected time of arrival (with the later assuming that their velocity is equal to the speed of light in vacuum =3*10^5 km/sec). Also, a "ns" (nanosecond) is equal to a billionth of a second, or 10^-9 secs.

More details at:

If superluminal neutrinos existed, that would have been the start of FTL communications, but apparently we will have to wait a while :gripe:

I know people that can find fault with what I am doing even before I do it. If that is not faster than the speed of light then what the hey.

Ha! Hehehehehe :romulan: Isn't that the truth. The proof has been with us all along.
