Mars One: An Apolitical, Commercial Mission to Settle on Mars Mars One has just revealed it’s plans to be the first project to land humans on Mars. They have already gained the support of commercial firms who will supply all necessary components. In 2016, a supply mission will be sent to a chosen landing site, followed by a rover in 2018 to scope out the perfect spot for settlement. By 2023, the first two astronauts will be sent to land on Mars and live out the remainders of their lives there. Two more astronauts will be sent every two years. The project is intriguing as it aims to do what NASA won’t – send people to Mars with no plans for their return to Earth, which is a key reason for Mars One’s feasibility. Astronaut selection begins in 2013 — could you be the first human on Mars? I am making a list of people I want to send. On Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6QoEEGySGm4 |

Here's the website the movie mentions: http://www.mars-one.com/ Nice CGI. So: Oxygen processed from water - as well as recycled. Water? - I guess Mars has some (ice at the poles) and in the soil, according to the FAQ Food - greenhouses. I think they should consider sending a large prebuilt geodesic dome frame (lightweight aluminum or something with a sealed base) that is landed there, and a second pack or packs of "glass" pieces that can be fitted into the frame and sealed. Internet Access - Likely to be slow. What was that contained eco-sphere project called? (that didn't work) Biosphere 2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biosphere_2 Polinating insects? Commensul bacteria (Wikipedia says that Cockroaches "boomed") This might also be relevant to the topic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MARS-500 |

The guy implied financing by major media coverage. Translate that as Mars reality TV series - subtext watch people die on another planet? |

I doubt this project will ever leave the drawing board, don't think it can be done by 2023 by a small unknown company. I'd love to be wrong though =) |

I guess that if they really have the money from the advertisers, then they can outsource everything, ie the rocket from SpaceX etc. |

But I would say it's worth watching purely for the awesome spaceship that shows technology that is not that far ahead of us =) |
