I know gavs building the game in C++. I have no clue how to program but you have to start somewhere and as the game is going to be completely open source i'd like to learn. Can any one recomend a great tutorial site on how to get started on the basics. (I do know you won't need C++ to mod a lot of things in the game but i still want to learn).

Yeah same here. I've heard it being mentioned on the site as well, but I don't have a clue what it is!

If we all had a group tutorial or something, perhaps we could help make the game, or at least be able to mod it ourselves! :D

you won`t need to know c or c++ to mod the game, and even if you did know it once the code is compiled it becomes assembeler code and you will not be able to alter it without having the source code.

So what will we need to make any mods?

Or will there be programs released that will do that for us, like with BOTF? :?:

some tools will be made available yes, also a bit of hex editing and you can mod away, i presume people will just want to add new ships, structures, races and alter stats, this will be quite simple with a how to released.

Well even though it sounds like you won't need C++ to mod, if you still want to learn it here are some good things:

One of the best site's I've found is:
http://www.1cplusplusstreet.com/

just search for tutorial and you'll get tutorials(lots), but remember C++ takes a long time to learn enough to be good enough to code games/high end programs.

Some others are: http://www.cpp-home.com/, and http://www.cppreference.com/. Though these are probably a bit more towards the intermediate/advanced coder.

One other thing, i know it becomes machine code once compiled but i was under the impression that this was going to be an open source game, is this not so then ?
