A Fairwell to a Founder.
We all know the famous statement. "Beam me up Scotty". Now It's time We Beam Scotty Home. For Us Trekkies, he was our first Engineer for the Enterprise. Scotty took us to places we had never been before, got us out of jams that seemed impossable. Yes if not for Scotty the Enterprise could have been in serious trouble. HE was a powerfull force on the show, saving Kirk by beaming him up just in the nick of time, or working with Spock to solve a probelm with the ship just moments away from disaster.
For you Scotty. We SALUTE YOU! KEEP OUR SHIP SAFE IN YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE OUT IN DEEP SPACE.
WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!
AND WE OFFER OUR THANKS AND GRATITUDE.
LIVE LONG AND PROSPER MR SCOTT,
SIGNING OFF,
STARDATE 2005.7.20

Yes a great shame, and a great loss. 85 was a good age though.

Scotty will be missed forever by us all.
Side note, i read his obit in my local newspaper and found out some interesting things about him.
He fought in WWII with the canadian armed forces, during the conflict he got shot 6 times with a machine gun. 4 hits to his leg, 1 to his chest (hit a silver lighter he was carrying and saved his life), and the last shot removed his middle right finger. I didnt believe i could have missed seeing him missing a finger so i checked on my dvd's and he really is missing one.
For reference i checked Star Trek V, about 10 minutes in when he is chatting with Uhura.
Also a comment from his dentist to scotty.
"Jimmy, You're going to be scotty long after you're dead. If I where you i would go witht he flow"
He did and in later years he attended over 40 trek conventions and lectured on engineering and mechanics at countless universities and colleges.
Truely an insperation to us all i say.

At least he died surrounded by his family. I'd hate to die alone...
He was suffering from Alzheimer's though, and he recently caught Pneumonia. Sadly, that's what finished him off.
(Why couldn't it have been an angry computer or something?! Oh wait...he would have fixed it then though...hmm...)
Farewell, oh greatest of engineers. You shall be sorely missed.

Never saw much of TOS, but what I saw makes Scotty look good...
After reading Gavin's post, I found something interesting (it's in the ST web-site article as well)
James Doohan was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Enginering from the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Apparently, half of the student body said Scotty was the reason they took up engineering.
Is there a greater tribute to an engineer?

I always thought he was Scottish so convincing - and a credit. I'd never realised he was missing a finger, i'll have to check my DVD.

Although I posted at the very beggining. I do have to say this.
I grew up watching the TOS program. Every week it helped me escape a lot of pain... What i did not realize is it also got me interested in Science, and math and things like that... Because of Scotty, i went into the Air Force, (planned to get into Nasa) that didnt work, but I did end up working nuclear energy field, and then later as a Nuclear Grade machinist. I would have never learned any of that had it not been for Mr. Doohan.
So when I posted my first post... Yea I cried... A great loss to me.. Wished I had met him when I had the chance at the Starcon Conventions..
I have already done my salute.. (it's the second post on the thread if your interested)
