what age would u like to live to? assuming aging stayed the same....

thisw is just moved from another post as it seems slightly weirder and might spark some serious conversations, like should euthanisa be legalised, when is some1 too old to have a job etc!

I think that poll is not right. If I *could* live forever, I'd certainly not want to do this in a state where I'm aged too much, say to a state today's century-old poeple have. If I'm in good constitution, feeling young, and being able to do certain things (you get that point I guess ;-)), it feels right to live as long as you like. Though I'd always prefer to have a choice. It's no good perspective to be bored an eternity.

If I could live in peak physical condition forever without aging, then I would. It is unlikely that one would ever grow bored since the world is a diverse and interesting place that constantly evolves and changes. If in the unlikelihood that I did get bored, I could then voluntarily end my life i.e assisted suicide or suicide.

This is quite a serious subject indeed, UnDated.

Where I live (The Netherlands), euthanisia has been legalised for a long time. And rightfully so! There are lots of people alive after serious accidents or with even more serious diseases. If such a situation is real pointless (i.e. no room for improvement) euthanisia should be legal to be practiced with the patient's permission (request) or of the parents'.

What this has to do with my preferable age.. Perhaps (hopefully) not that much. I like to be alive as long as I can make objective decisions about whatever. At the age of 70, the physical capabilities as are the mental ones ae decreasing rapidly. (in general).
Once I am unable to be in control of my own decisions, I'd rather not make them at all.

I believe experience of 'life' does not end after this one. There is no need in letting people suffer without any goal whatsoever.

Post subject:  Re: would you like to live forever?

Well this topics weird for a botf2 forum. But in answer id say yes id like to live forever as i hate the prospect of being decayed and imiaging what it would be like if i could feel it after i died. That really freaks me out so of course id do anything to survive for as long as i can but i hate the prospect also of being old and feeble and loosing bladder control and all that old people stuff like when ur 75 or older.

I know stemcells are supose to be one idea scientists are looking at and also cryogenics but unforutunatly for cryogenics they chop your block off and freeze that and not your whole body. Why i have no idea lol but seems daft as ur not going to come back to life are you with just a head left.

Ah yes but this poll asks what age if you aged like normal so @ 130 u look like Dr. McCoy does in TNG pilot!

Post subject:  Re: would you like to live forever?

What's this "would I like to" malarky? I AM going to live for ever... :D

Actually, I'd only take that option if it was available to my two kids as well (and yeah, maybe the wife too ;) ), as we just aren't made to bury our offspring.

Really annoyingly, some scientists believe that mine will either be the last generation to die out, or the first to live forever.

I can just see it now, the year is 2065, and as I pass away peacefully and painlessly in my sleep after a fair old innings of 90, some c*nt of a scientist in the next room will shout out half an hour after my death, "eureka, i've found it! the secret to eternal life is ours!"

i'll haunt the s.o.b for the rest of his miserable life (i.e. eternity) if he does.

Ok then, let's look at this from a practical point of view. Do you know how awfull crowded it is going to be once everyone lives forever? I mean China will be only the beginning!

People have to die in order to maintain world balance. A balance which is already disturbed because people live much longer already since a few 100 years.

Post subject:  Re: would you like to live forever?

It's not as if we aren't already - why do you think NASA was set up?

If I was going to live forever, then the aging process would have to be stopped before I agreed to taking the wonder drug or whatever it was that made me live forever. I certainly wouldn't want to live to the age of 150 (Or more) and end up looking like a walking corpse!

Like Centurion said, if you can't make your own decisions, why should you be essentially forced to live, simply because others can't stomach the thought of letting you pass away, or because the law says so?

I totally agree with Euthanasia - as long as it is properly controlled, ie. 2 Doctors give the say-so, all the legal stuff is sorted out first, not forced into it, that sort of thing.

Isn't it more humane to let someone die happily, surrounded by their family whilst they can still make their own decisions, or whilst the pain of their disease hasn't yet become unbarable?

I just don't understand why the thought of letting/allowing a loved one die is less favourable than letting them live until their body falls apart around them, and they are unable to even look after themselves like even a child can.

In this day and age where we can give people the choice and support they need to make their own decisions, why does the law forbid this? If anything, the law should support and cater for choices to be made, so people aren't forced to suffer an unbearable life of misery and pain.

I know the law is simply a framework of rules, regulations, and punishments that are designed to regulate the way you live so that the people can be protected and assured of justice, but isn't the stopping of a humane way to die a form of preventing the justice that people need and want?

Euthanasia should be allowed, especially if we're gonna live forever.

...

Skeeter, i'm not an expert in Cryogenics or anything, but I believe the reason why only the head is usually preserved, is simply because it is easier to preserve just the head.

Crygenics invloves freezing the body/body part as quickly as possible. The longer it takes for the freezing to occur, the bigger the ice crystals are, and the more damage that is done to the body by the ice.

It is sort of the same with ice cream really. The longer the ice cream has taken to freeze, the larger the crystals are, and the 'grittier' it tastes. This is also why ice cream doesn't taste as nice when you get to the last couple of scoops at the bottom of the tub. The constant freezing and thawing of the ice cream means new ice crystals have formed at un uncontrollable rate, leading to large crystals, and a gritty texture.

The smaller the object you freeze, the easier it is to control the freezing. It is easier to freeze the head in a controlled manner, than to freeze the entire body.

Scientists also believe that by the time they have cracked how to Crygenically freeze a body and reanimate it, they will be able to 'build' a new body to attach the head to anyway, so the body essentially doesn't matter.

This is why only the head is frozen, and not just the body. As Undated said though, this might be the 'old' way of doing it, afterall, new techniques for things are always being tested. Perhaps they know how to controllably freeze the entire body now?

Not likely Scatter.

What is most probable is that their will be hundreds of wars of ethnic cleansing on the planet as nations battle for space and resources wiping out at least half of the world population in the process. Then things will quiet down again and the population will grow to pre-war levels; then the wars may break out again.

If i was in a good physical condition then i would hope to live a long life. Personally, and i hope i don't upset anynoe by saying this but if i was really ill then i don't think i'd want to be alive. It seems some what pointless

well i always wonder what out greatest mind could have achieved if they had lived till they were 200, imagine if Einstein had finished his work on the grand unified theory. or Beethoven had continued to make music.

The productive life for an academic is far shorter than others as we spend so long training and learning, I would have thought that 40 years would have been a good innings for the active portion of a researchers life.

Depends who you ask. Some people like Einstein kept working up to the day he died, (the same hour) perhaps.

Its as simply as it could be, the one thing that will make all things easier and possible is:

THE SPICE MELANGE!!!

Though it's only available on one planet in the Universe.

Always remember: Fear is the mindkiller, fear is the small death!

That's another reason why i'd rather wait until the secret of everlasting life has been perfected. It isn't pretty when things start failing and you start to lose control of what little you have left...
