here is a rule of thumb for the klingons:
kill it until it is dead, then kill it again to make sure
here are some tips for becoming a great klingon, but they prob wont make you a good player:
get drunk and sing (and by sing, i mean yell and scream) while playing
every time you win a battle yell qua'pla (not sure how you spell it) and drink another blood wine (or any other alcoholic drink)

Heavily research until you can build level 2 scouts with cloaks. Then just build as many of them as you can put them into units of 9 and pick off the federation ships as they move about
30 scout 2's cloaked can also kill a borg vessal without losing a ship.

Early ingame go straight for them when u have 1 good fleet of 9 ships comprised of 3 Battlecruisers and scouts. Always good as battlecruisers are damn strong compared to most ships early ingame on tech level 2 espeically.
Also you need less troop transports i think cos the klingons have a bonus there and can take over better than others. Not sure but i always thought they did.
If u want to kill a race nearby quiclky just at about turn 30 make ships and head for there colonies and raid them with 1 destroyer/battlecruiser and a scout or 2. 3 ships per system. Then when u get to there main homeworld build ships like mad and put them over the enemy homeworld and starve them dry with raid. With no money they will become weaker and weaker. Eventually they make a ship now and again but its destroyed instantly in a battle as u should have more ships then them in there system. Before u attack the home system in bombardment make sure u quickly capture there new small systems before they get over 50 populance. That way u only need 1 maybe 2 troop ships.
This strat worked in a game once and i totally destroyed the cardassians that way.

As far as I know, you're right Skeeter - the Klingons have a 50% bonus or something when it comes to troop Transports. You can take over a system more easily with a Klingon Troop Transport than say...a Federation one.
If you play as the Federation, it's generally better to wipe out the system and recolonise it, rather than capture it. That avoids all the morale problems.
Always remember to keep your Cloakable ships Cloaked, and if you're gonna have minor battles, keep them on their own. You get a completely free turn then, instead of a turn where your Cloaked ships are simply not attackable, whilst the rest are canon fodder. ![Sad :(](./images/smilies/icon_sad.gif)

to get ur ships ready to attack a system in the same turn whilst cloaked reorder the ships. And u can attack even though u started the turn with the ships cloaked.
Instant teraform trick is also important, kilngons have to get out and about quickly. so group colony ships with troop transports and use the instant colonization to spread quickly.
and annoy ur friends with single cloaked socuts in their territory, it really can distrupt a train of thought.

And be sneaky. Although its a romulan trick it works for klinogns cos of cloak.
1. Have a fleet cloaked
2. Have 3 scouts in a group.
3. Keep the cloaked fleet with the scouts at all time. This way the AI thinks its gona fight only 3 scouts whereas it will get a surprise on 2nd turn when a fleet decloaks and kills them hehe. Best in mp this trick.

that trick was used against me.... . I sent a small fleet to intercept, and then "noooooooooooo" huge fleet uncloaks, and I panic. but by then, half my fleet is destroyed, and the other fleet is scattered across my empire...

Qa'pla is the right spelling

my fave tactic is what i call the cardassian ploy, try to stay pally with the feds and rommies, ally with them as soon as poss, kill off the cardies and ferengi asap then offer a war pact to both the romulans and federation simultanius against each other but dont offer to go to war with em, make fleets of ships and stick em over the member planets, as they kick the daylights out of each other, when you think they are weak enough declare war against one or both, in one turn you should theoreticaly clean the whole board of enemy ships and starbases, i try to stay pally with the feds due to the pain of chasing down minor members. the only real effective tactic i tend to use against the feds is get a minor to ally with me then build a starbase over em, even if the feds get em to join, your starbase stays making it usefull to knock off ship production during wars, important tho when using this tactic, dont offer em membership because if they switch alegence your starbase will vanish. another sneaky trick is if you ally is trying to capture an enemy world just send along a few troop transports and make 1 attack the planet every turn, you will either a) lose them all fruitlessly b) your ally will capture the system c) nothing d) you capture the system and your ally loses a lot of ships for nothing. colonise like MAD, if an oponent captures a colony then they have to develope and pacify it, later in the game you can just go capture it back and get a fully developed colony for no real outlay.
