I don't call this 'spam', 'cause it's got some 'meat' to it, per the rules: maybe this might spur someone on to add some computer power behind our F@H Team! If admins disagree, I apologize, and wont take any offense to seeing the thread disappear.

We start with 100ghz, and subtract as we go! Lets keep the posts just to reflecting new ghz folding for the team, we've got another thread of general chit-chat, or post a new thread if there's another general F@H question!

Me first:
100ghz - 5.2ghz X2 system - 4ghz Athlon MP system - 1.8ghz Turion64 laptop =

89Ghz Remaining

Take it away, boys! If you 'borg' a new computer, feel free to make a second or third post!

I cannot even judge wheter it's 'spam' or not as I haven't got the slightest idea what the hell you are talking about..
So, what is F@H and why do you need more computer power?

Yes please explain in better what this topic is about and its purpose as if you dont it will get locked for the simple reason of being a useless topic which is not understandable.

EDIT*

After using google for F@H Team i found this site it looks to me like another one of them work units sites like seti sites and the one MOH posted about (think it was MOH).

So to the original poster of the topic i say again, describe your points for this topic and what you want to talk about here also explain a bit about this site and its purpose.

Skeeter, the whole point of Ringold's idea is that the more computing power our BOTF2 Folding@home team has, the more we're going to get noticed.

Basically, there are many, many, programs that allow you to run scientific research on your computer, and Folding@home is just one of them.

There are some websites, such as http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/ that record the stats of the teams that have the most "power" behind them - the more people that are in a team, the more power the processors of a team are, no matter how old they may be, since it is the combined speed that matters, not the individual speeds.

You can install the program on as many computers as you like. If you set the program up on such computers in your name, then you will get the points associated with their completed units. We have decided to call this process "Borging" for obvious reasons.

The more computers that work in your name, the more units you complete, and the more points you get for the team. The more points the team has, the more advertising that can be done for BOTF2.

Captain_Ringold has worked out that 100Ghz of processing speed will be enough for the Folding@home team to at least get noticed on the analysis websites. By combining the speeds of all the processors that are currently working for the team, we will be able to work out how close we are to our target.

Once that target has been met, and we show up on such websites, it will increase the amount of advertising power that the team can do for BOTF2 - not only will that get more people interested in the game, it's also being done in the name of actual scientific research! :D

I'm sure you won't say no to that!

If you're wondering why Ringold created a new thread for the subject, the simple fact of the matter is that the current thread is up to 17 pages, and that is simply from the 14 or 15 members of the team that bother to post there.

I'm sure you'll agree, that can be a bit daunting to someone who would like to contribute, but doesn't want to go through all those pages of posts to find out what has happened so far - which is why a new thread was the logical idea.

Now if you still think it is a bad idea, then by all means, like Ringold said, delete or lock this thread. I for one though think it is a good idea, and it will perhaps also mean that more people from the site will join our group.

...

My sister might be getting my old computer after christmas. It's only got a AMD K6-2 450Mhz processor, but every little helps. I won't add it to the total until I know that its up and running, but I can add my current computer to the total:

74.94Ghz - 3.21Ghz = 71.73Ghz*

71.73Ghz Remaining

*I don't know how my computers apparent Hyperthreading capability factors into this though, so if I have two processors, then my combined total would be 6.42Ghz, in which case the group total has 68.52Ghz left.

I'd like to know how CptRingold found out that 100Ghz would get us noticed? It's an interesting idea but if possible could you explain it?

Thanks

100Ghz isn't a definite number - it's mostly just a guess.

It's based on the rates at which some of the teams on the site work at - the faster they go, the faster the processing speed/power they have.

I haven't got a clue how to work it out myself, so i'll just nod and agree. :P

In case anbyone was wondering, as a team, we currently have 24978 points, and have completed 165 work units.

The team ranked at number 2000 on http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com has completed 1,175 units, but only has 88188 points, so we don't actually have that far to go to get onto the board.

We're actually doing a very high amount of points per work unit

24978/165 = 151.3818182 PPWU :P

See, you guys get it!

Like what was said, I'm just trying to pimp our team (which, skeeter, you didn't have to google for, it couldn't of been an inch away from this thread on our own forum ;) ), and like MOE said, the higher up our team gets, then maybe it'll get noticed by someone interested. Maybe someone that's played BOTF, and therefore knows what it stands for, sees the "2", gets excited, clicks on our teams homepage link, come here, and maybe contribute to development. If not, then at least we're having some fun and contributing to science and not busying ourselves posting another "were is the game!!!!" threads ;)

100Ghz was more an arbitrary number, but it would put us on a pretty competitive level. Depending on how long we typically as a team leave on our computers, that could be maybe like 3000 - 5000 points per day. I've got 11ghz, and I THINK I'm averaging like 800ppd (havent kept track, and we dont rank on the sites yet so I'm not sure), and I'm on 24-7, so you could sort of estimate roughly along those lines.

Note that VERY FEW teams have that level of output around the 1000 rank level. With that level of output, we'd rank, in terms of production, somewhere around 200, and thats not something to shake a stick at! It'd take us a while to actually attain that high of rank, but we'd definately FLY through these ranks we currently are in.

Regarding P4s / Hyperthreading / virtual cores: Lets count only physical processors, HT only boosts F@H threading in a two-client setup around 10%, so excluding the virtual cores makes the 100ghz mean a bit more.

At any rate: 68.53Ghz Remaining!! 31Ghz down faster then I expected, this is good!

Understand i never read much of MOE's* topic on folding. So you should be able to see where I and maybe others came from when we were like "what the.. whats this all about then?".

I understand now its part of the project MOE* started and that you wanted to split the topic with anohter view on folding and the team.

Hehehe...I wonder who this MOH is Skeeter...? :P

Your reasons for needing answers are actually part of the reason why we did start a new thread, Skeeter.

As you said, you haven't been reading the pages, and it was a bit much to expect people to read 17 pages of posts.

By having a new thread, we can encourage more people to join, coz they'll be happier to read this rather than a 17-page thread.

I'm glad my explanation was helpful though, as you know, I tend to get a bit carried away in explaining stuff...

Since it's not 'open source' in the sense that anybody that drops by sourceforge or whatever can poke at the source code, I'm not sure, but maybe someone that could help with development would see it and come here to help with a sequel to a fav oldie, or maybe it'll just get wider notice, more anticipation, more fanfare upon release.

I don't really know, I just like folding

Which version is up to you. If you want the visual aspect of knowing whats happening, then you can run the 5.03 graphical client. If you want it to run in the background, and likely slightly faster, then the 5.04beta console might be the way to go.

I'll make an BOTF2 F@H Team FAQ thread soon (before or just after christmas), but otherwise, please visit the other thread for instructions on setup.. MOE and I both I believe have nicely detailed setup instructions, but basically:

name: Tielee
team: 46574

I'm in the middle of backing up all my stuff ready to reformat my computer.

In a few days, i'll have folding@home running on my current 3.21Ghz computer, and i'll have it running on my old 450Mhz computer as well.

My friend (Authur Wonderbird) made a mistake - his computer is 2.2Ghz, not 1.8 like he thought.

So that's

56.21 - 0.4 = 55.81

55.81Ghz Remaining

Woah...we've got 46Ghz working on folding@home now... 8O

God, if only they let me load it on the computers at work. We have 26 Quad-Core PowerMac G5s at 2.8GHz x 4 each, then there's the 60 or so Mac Mini's....ah, we'd rule F@H

add my *shudder* Pentium 4 */shudder* (lol) @ 2.8GHz with HT (but I don't think that factors into this)

so: 55.81GHz - 2.8GHz = 53.01GHz

53.01GHz Remaining!!!

and when I build my Athlon FX-57 based compy in a month or so, I'll add that too 8)

So you've joined our group then, TheWhiteRaven?

By any chance, are you the elusive Cookiee or Bogseat? Coz we haven't got a clue who those people are!

It would be great if you could get those computers working for folding@home, but if you can't, then you can't.

I'd love to get it running on the 1000+ computers in uni, but but the IT department is rather "Hitlerish" when it comes to installing programs on their computers - "if it ain't necessary, it won't be installed on the network."

And if I installed it myself, i'd get my password revoked...
