An excellent piece of software i stumbled across, it allows you to paint directly onto a mesh somewhat like deep paint, the differance is blacksmith 3d is free. what this means? for space combat games planets always have the pinching you get from the texture map being stretched, with this tool that problem is gone, you can import as obj, and then import the textures you want to paint onto the mesh, so you can add land, then import you ocean texture, paint those on, you can rotate the mesh as you paint and the uv map is updated as you go, so the fianl texture map is as close to perfect as your gonna get. the one limitation with the free version is max map size is 1024x1024.
