This thread was made due to the fact that the old thread just titled 'ships' turned into the dominion one. no problem, i just moved here.
A couple months back i thought i could contribute and make a minor (Tholian) ship. Boy was I wrong, and i failed miserably. But now, after taking classes, i remade it, and here it is. Its not finished yet, and I have no idea how many polys it has, cause truespace seems not to have a built in polygon check. This ship is changed from the last screen i took last night, i made it look better, and definatly has less polys.
Tholian Aurora Class
all criticism is good, the better you criticize me, the better it will be at the end.

This isn't a criticism, it's more of an observation - the engines look more like Rockets or Missiles to me than engines...
Anyways, I think it looks great. I especially like the texturing at the back of the ship, the dark pattern looks cool and very crystal-like.
I haven't seen the Tholian episode of TOS in a looooong time, and I know there weren't many decent shots of the Tholian ships, but the support struts look a little...flimsy to me.
They may be like that intentionally, or they may be like that coz that's the way they were. If not though, I think they should be a <little> bit thicker.
Then again, the struts of the Excelsior class, - or even the Galaxy class - look a bit flimsy to me, so do whatever you think is best, General.

whats your poly count? i see a lot of cylinders on that ship, also the main engine houseing, i see you have intruded the front to creath an engine like look, this will double the poly count on that primitive, better to use a black texture instead.

thanks for the observations (not criticism )
see, in the blueprints nothing was labled, and i had no idea wheter those things were engines or weapons. And the blueprints were very vague with those (graphic wise), so i made my own. I'll edit them a bit, make them look more like engines.
Ill thicken the support struts right away too.
- edit -
jig, didnt see your post. sorry. i cannot check for polys, cause truespace doesnt have a poly check. (i cant find it anywhere, in the tutorials, manual, readme, internet, forums, nowhere). Black texture? meaning just make the engines black?
- edit -
ill be entirely redesigning the engines, so ill post in a couple hours the updated screens.

no the part you intruded only to be black, this makes it look like a hole when there ain`t one, so you have less polys on the model.

To be honest mate i would just lose the rocket/engines with struts and keep just the dart shape and add details on the back for some engines there. More tholian that way i reckon. Upto you though dude

It's a nice start of the ship, General Nemitor. Personally, I do not mind the way the engines look since all the pics I found of the Tholian vessel had that kind of engines. I would make them just a little bit smaller and that's it.
Besides that, I do hope you change the textures a bit as it appears to be a bit dull at the moment. While I know there aren't much more detailed pics available (since the episode they appeared in was launched in 1968) I think it is acceptable to 'improvise' a bit on the appearance of the ship to make it fit a bit more with the rest of the designs.
I look forward to see the next versions of your design.

Perhaps we could have them as two different designs of ship?
We could have the 60's one as a sort of Uber defensive ship that can't leave the home system, whilst the Aurora would be weaker, but is able to leave the Tholia system?

I had not seen that site, thanks for posting it! However the images on that site are down. Do you happen to have them downloaded?
Thanks for the ideas and observations - the new screens will be up in a couple hours.

Updates! Im still editing and modding, and i can change anything at (almost) anytime. These are just 4 of the 'basic' ships, and im making better models tonight based on what you think of these. So let me know please.
Tholain B1
- Aurora with "rocket" (A) engine on support beam
--
Tholian B2
- Aurora with "other" (B) engine on support beam
--
Tholian B3
- Aurora with A engine close to hull
--
Tholian B4
- Aurora with B engine close to hull

Last one has weapon pods or whatever the hell they are embeded into the hull so in effect useless in that position. In my opinion.
I like the third version personally. Just need it alot lower poly for the weapon pods or whatever they are hehe.
Also a small tip for showing pictures. Try to disable the grid for the 3d view please as it blocks the view sometimes and does make it a bit messy to admire the model mate.

can do
at this point in time, i have no idea if those should be engines or weapons. I dont think that they used rockets in TOS though...

I particulary like the last one's image - the drive nacelles should be "outside" the primary hull, but not detached as in the first picture. I really like that solution

I assume you're working on altering the images now?
Coz there's just red crosses at the moment...

Matress, you realy need to by yourself a better computer
The pics show perfectly. I myself am still a fan of the very first pic of your engines. But since I appear to be the only one on that, I vote for the third pic. as second place. I like the way those engines look better than 2 and 4.
Oh, and where are the upgraded textures..?

This IS a new computer!
And i've got them working now - but I have to enter them into my browser for some reason. They won't show up directly on the page.
...
I agree with ftranschel about the fourth one - IF you decide that they are engines. If they are weapons though, then Skeeter is right - they would be useless in that position.
If you want the pod thing as weapons, then I think either the first or third one is best.
If the pod thing is gonna be a weapon, then it should be as it is in first/third images. If it is gonna be an engine though, it should be as it is in the second/fourth images. I think it looks more like a Warp Engine in the second and fourth images.

theres some bad news.
to put it simply: my entire HD got corrupted due to a virus i was "hunting". Everything was lost. most of my movies and music was saved though, sine it was on my second hard drive. So ive spent the last day trying to fix my computer, and have now just succeded. I'll begin remaking it fot the 3rd time soon.

Ooh, bad luck.
I know what it's like to lose important stuff due to crashing computers, so I can sympathise with you. In fact, I bet most people on the site would!
Good lcuk with your third attempt. Remember, the model isn't cursed, coz it's third time lucky.

I know how u feel i lost a 80gb hard drive with lots of downloads on that were hard to get and couldnt get again. Annoying as hell when that happens as u cant do much.
You can only improve the model if u do it again. So gluck with better version

i just watched enterprise 2x16 (future tense) again and there was a realy cool vulcan battle cruiser in. the captain saw it in daniel (the guy who claims to be from the 31st century) crew quater on his 3d-information-thing^^
i m afraid this is the best pic i could give so far, getting the episode in dvd quality would give a better view
maybe somebody would give it a try? or do everybody else think this ship was never build?

Not much to go on but did a bit of it just the begining of the mid section. If you can find detailed pics i might be able to do the rest and have it more acurate. But really doubt that design exists anywhere but that very brief snapshot of it.
Found some pics of it. here
I'll see if i can do more.
Ok did some more for 10 mins.
Dunno if triangle bit in middle needs hollowing or not as i cant clearly see whats supose to be there to be honest.
Ok so far?
Actually after looking i can see where i've gone a bit wrong with the mid section the rings are true circle shapes and there isnt a triangle bit. I'll update tomorrow im tired as its 2am lol.
