 looking for a walk through as feds

Alrighty, played the feds for 50 games. none of them looked good. Lost my butt in 47 of the 50 games.


I'm looking for info for te Start of the game. I mean turns 1 - 50. by turn 50 I'm lucky if I have 5 systems started and 3 outposts.. also, i have no distroyers whatso ever. I play all races level 1 impossable mode, large irregular Galaxy, no minors.

From what i have seen since I first started here, no one plays at this level.
Any other race I win 7 out of 10 games.

Just seem to have problems with the feds.

Oh yea... important.... I'm unmodded.....

Okay dear Winterhawk, speak after me: It doesn't matter my game isn't modded. It doesn't matter my game... you get the point!

If you don't cheat in editing only the feds stats up then no mod does anything dramatically regarding balance (besides powering down the ferengi which is simply justice!). I get 10 systems by turn 60 no matter which mod.

If on starting Level 1 you have 5 systems started by turn 50 then you're doing well. If you run into another major race by turn 50 then it's probably over (unless they are being killed on the other end by some other major race). Without minors you'll just have to find a game where you have room to grow and not meet any other majors until you have Galaxies coming.

The Federation Destroyers are a joke and aren't worth building. Unmodded the first warship I build is the Liberty and then only if I desperately need them before the Galaxy is available.

Playing without Minors hurts the Fed more than anyone. With Minors you could have a couple of minors by turn 50 who can pump out colony and troop transports in just a few turns for each and then can pump out Galaxies as soon as they are available. For Feds your minors are your main ship building systems for most of the game.

So tell me, why do you play without any minors? That is the sole power of the federation! Without minors on impossible I don't find it strange you get slaughtered every time you play.

Just try it with only a 'few' minors and you'll see it will change a lot already!

Destroyers are useful actually - they draw some enemy fire and reduce damage to your more important ships... ok, so they might blow up in the first second or so of combat, but they have done their job by then :P

Additionally, they are really good cannon fodder for klinogns and roms who would not dare to attack a solif defiant wing. And while the mirandas blow up, the defiants can defeat a four to six time bigger fleet of romulan warships actually :)

My choice to play without minors is to see what a race can do on it's own, without added science or intel.

I started a new game and actually made it to turn 150. Got a good start going. Met the Klingons at turn 143. I have 3 more systems then Kling's, so a tiny advantage there. Also I changed my build Queue loading. I no longer do 3 to 5 farms and 7 Replacators, ect. at the start of a new system I build 1 of each. until I have 3 levels of food, and production, then I double up on both. seems to speed up my overall points and building times. Ships wise I am even with the Klingons, however they do have battle crusiers where I do not. Looks as it will be an interesting game for a change. However I am staying on the side of caution at this point in time. I'll fill you all in as I go along.

I started up one playing the federation about a week back or so.
Im at turn 500 or so right now, and control about 1/3 of the galaxy (playing large galaxy).
I could probaly have quite a bit more space controlled, but i have this thing for spending lots and lots of credits building up systems (at least when im not in a war with another race).
I started out poorly, met the sheliak, and quickly lost 2 destroyers to them (yea yea, i know destroyers suck), and then avoided them for about 100 turns. In those 100 or so turns i met up with the mintaukans (spelling?...the vulcan like ones that join you right away), and the bynars. Got both of them into the fold, and colonized about 5 or 6 other systems. Didnt have much of a fleet, but even at turn 150 i hadent ment any other majors, and i was expecting it at any time. First major i met was the romulans, and i did a mad rush of building up colony ships and troop transports to take as many systems on the border as fast as i could. I ended up taking i think 3 or 4 more systems, upping myself to about 15 systems at that time.
I then secured a peace treaty with them and while building up my defences (and watching the romulan border) i started to explore on the other side. I got lucky then and found the vulcans, bolians, and the edo.
Quickly i started to pump credits into them and won them over, then the vulcans started to build me a nice fleet. Right around this time i was still low on teck levels, but i was getting a new ambassador ship like every 10 turns, and had 2 other colonies pumping out a new troop transport and colony ship every 7 or 8 turns.
Around turn 250 or so i had 3 fleets of 9 ambassadors (and amazingly had the credits comming in to pay for it all), about a dozzen transports and colony ships, and around 20 systems.
Thats when i met the klingons, but i was lucky, they where on the border of the romulans. Again i managed to secure a peace treaty with them (after blowing up a few of their ships), and continued to build up my systems, fleets, and borders.
Around turn 300 (i still had only met the romulans and klingons), i sent my fleets into romulan systems (they where 1 sector away from my colonies) and provoked the romulans into starting a war with me. Shortly after i had bloodied their noses and taken 2 systems from them. This had the effect of knocking them back about 4 sectors from any of my systems, and left me with just the klingons to worry about for a while. Again i built up my fleets, built up the 2 systems i took from the romulans, and continued to improve my core systems.
Around turn 400 i crossed the klingon border and got them to declare war on me (romulans still where hurting from the last encounter and didnt take advantage of the situation). By now i had FINALY started to get galaxy classes into my fleets and was slowly replacing my smaller and weaker ships with the bigger ones. In quick attacks (a bit to quick) i took 4 klingon systems, however i did to much to fast. The 4 systems droped the morale of my other systems to disgruntled and actully drove the first klingon system i took to rebelious. I had destroyed most of the klingon forces (they where 2% on the empire list thing, and i had 79%, romulans i think where like 28% or so, something like that). I quickly lost the first klingon system i took to rebelion, but saved the other 3 systems, thou they where at discontent. I once again built up my fleet, started building starbases where i had outposts (boy was i happy when i got those =P), and rebuilt the few ships i lost (mostly ambassadors).

Im at turn 550 or so, and this is where i stand.
I have 27 systems, with an extra 7 i havent colonized yet, as well as the antieans (spelling) well behind my lines (havent had the time to give them gifts to get them). I have 4 strong (veterin crews) fleets of 9 galaxy II ships, and most of my systems are working on teck level 7-9 upgrades. Most systems are getting me from about 50 to about 200 credits per turn, and even after the cost of my fleets, i still net about 2000 credits per turn or so. The romulans have 5 systems they control, and from what i can tell they have perhaps 15 to 20 ships, none of them warbirds.
The klingons have about the same in ships, thou they have a few cruisers. In the past 50 or so turns i managed to take about 6 systems from them, but the best part was i took their homeworld. They sent most of their fleet after me, but by the time they got there i had 2 fleets of 9 galaxy II's and a starbase waiting, so they lost most of their fleet.
I have encountered the ferangi, however since they refuse a peace treaty with me i cant get any exacts on how big their space is. I do know they are on the other side of the klingons and romulans, so i have a buffer between me and the ferangi and thus can ignore their threats.
Aparently i have broken the back of the romulans also, because by now i should be getting nailed by their tal shiar at least every other turn, and since i met them they only used intel on me 3 times (3 times in about 400 turns), and only 1 worked (lost 5 farms on a system far from their borders).
last time i was logging out of the game i did retire to see how big each race was. Federation was on the top, ferangi has about 1/2 the score i do, and romulan, klingon and cardassians are all in the very bottom. From the score graphs ild say the cardassions are doing no better then the roms and klings, however i havent met them or had any diplomacy with them yet.

A large part of the map hasent been explored, about 1/2 of it, but thats because i have been busy slowly taking system after system from the roms and klings.

Im wondering how it will turn out, and i should win easy now, only thing is it will take me some time to finsh the way im going at it.

Suggestions? Ideas? Comments?

Wow. I just got the message about your post. I read it throughly, wow!
what ever happened with that game? I gave up for a bit on playing the Feds for a bit.. (then again I have not played anything for a while.

Ah well, let us know how it went or if your still playing... I'm interested.

Still playing the same game.
I since retook the klingon system i had lost to rebelion, however the klingons started to expand away from me and are now at 10 or 11 systems.
The romulans are now at 6 systems, haveing colonized a new one in the last few turns. Still havent met the cardassians, and the ferangi are still at war with me. Good news is i took the time to get a few science/scout ships out and im exploring new space and should find out where exacaly the ferangi are, and if lucky, where the cardies are.
Checking on the empire thingie i found that the romulans have no minors, and the klingons have only one.
Compaired to what i have (Vulcans, Sheliak, Mintakians (spelling?), Bynars, Edo, Anticans, Ktarians, Tamaraians, and a few others i cant remember) (12 minors), i have an advantage against them.

In close striking range i have 2 romulan systems, and the romulan homeworld is only 5 sectors from my main fleet. As far as the klingons go, i have their homeworld, and they have like 5 or 6 systems in under 5 sectors away from my main fleet also.
Klingon and Romulan homeworlds started at about 8 sectors away from each other in the start of the game, no wonder they didnt manage to expand fast, they where probaly at war with each other. Im thinking the same thing happened with the ferangi and cardies, they are likely to have started near each other, which is quite amazing considering its a large galaxy.

Ill keep you updated on my game, however its now taking me about 5 minutes per turn, mostly because i check on every system and each fleet of ships each and every turn.
