been working on an oberth class
finally got it to look right.
I am happy with the results, now I just have to whip up some textures for it.

Nice :)

Perhaps redo some parts to make them smoother and have a limit of 800 polys perhaps.

 Dunno if I have to polies to do that...most of the polies are in the saucer section..

though I will see if I can pump out a better hull section...though I doubt it...thats my third one

maybe it'll look smoother after textures?

That last picture with the gridle on the underside of nacels, you can make it flat as you can get same effect with textures mate. If it helps. And just if you can make it so there no very big angles like the top back of the secondary section (bottom bit) Then it should be ok. Should be able to do it within 800 polys.

ya lose that grid bit and do it with textures, that`ll save you a few hundred right of the bat, i can`t see you loseing to much of the saucer, but i reckon you`ll get her down to around 850, nice model though, good work.

i just thought of something, unless some madman is going to build a massive fllet of oberts then 1400 polys is no prob as you`ll only have a few in service at any time.

I doubt the Oberth's will be great. Unless someone has made a major mod to there shields and weapons :D

agreed...maybe i'll leave the grid then...
lol not sure..should I leave the grid or delete it regardless? I might delete it and see what I can do (if I can do) to the bottome section...
though my hounest opinion is I probably cant do much too it, because it uses spheres and cylinders, and even little steps for them cost lots'a polies...

In all honesty, the grid looks out of place given the detail level of the rest of the ship... try to maintain consistency :)

so, I should just stick a box there in place of the grid? and just give the box a "grid" look? (though I reckon you wont be able to see through it but not like anyone is going to look that close at an oberth...

or will they

Alright, here are 2 more W.I.P. shots.
I got rid of the grid and put a "rounded box" (as gavin suggested)

Now, the count is 1370 polygons.

What have I found? The oberth is easy as hell to texture :p
Almost everything is just plain hull...
oh and the entire ship aint textured btw! and dont worry, I havent put the hull plating on the textrure yet (thats always a last touch for me)

now here is the new simulated "grid"

What's be the point of building a fleet of Oberth's. Unless it was the MarkX with Sovy shields and weapons, but i suppose it wouldn't be an Oberth. :?

Trhe Matress irs plreased! (Notice all the r's?)

I suppose those last pics would definitely make the Uber-Oberth a feared vessel, although the apparent poor-man's cloaking device won't work. We Romulans can actually see light, afterall.

Even if you guys hadn't noticed Trekboychris's mention of the upgraded Oberth, I would still have made this post anyway! The Uber-Oberths will be a reality!

Oh, and just so you know, I like the design. Good one, Fireball!

some constructive criticism of the model -

imo there's too much anti-aliasing on the texture, especially on the red lines. it gives a look of lacking definition. the only other real criticism is the saucer shape. it needs more polys. doesn't look round enough.

they're minor criticisms though, i assure you, for what is otherwise a damn fine piece of work.
