WinRAR is regarded as better than Winzip because you are able to extract both .zip and .rar files, whereas with Winzip you can only extract .zip
ENGLISH: http://www.download.com/WinRAR/3000-225 ... ag=lst-0-1
GERMAN: http://www.download.com/WinRAR-German/3 ... ag=lst-0-2
Note: Although its just a 40day trial, you can crack it so you can use it for ever! If anyone would like the Crack programme then please email me and i'll get it to you a.s.a.p.

Thanks for that, but I got a cracked version of WinRAR 4.1 from Kazaa.
You haven't done anything wrong that way.
You CAN use WinRAR on STBOF, so give it a try. Just make sure you don't unzip (Or would that be unRAR?) the entire archive! 8O

Doesn't pressing print screen work (Some times shown as Prntscr or Prntscrn)
Just copy it into Paint, Irfanview, or whatever graphics program you use. Oh, and make sure you save it.
Anyway, I got my just deserts. I uninstalled winRAR coz I didn't like it that much. Somehow, the uninstallation program installed a virus whilst it got rid of winRAR.
AVG quickly stamped on it though.

Just to confirm, is the ground combat system for BOTF 2 going to be very similar to BOTF? ie. load up on ships and troop transports to get a bigger attack number than the defensive number based on orbitals, planetary shields, and buildings bonuses? I always found this aspect of the game somewhat unsatisfying. I'm not sure how to improve it without fundamentally altering the focus of the game. The cheesy ground combat system from MOO 2 comes to mind, but I don't think a similar system would add that much to the game and certainly wouldn't be worth the extra work and delay of release. Also, admittedly, Trek has always been horrible at portraying ground combat. Anyone have any ideas on potential future mods to the ground combat system?

i argued till i was blue in the face for a more detailed system of combat, from having armies, occupying forces and generally more complicated ground invasion. someone else suggested some kind of C&C ground combat (maybe a botf 5 idea) but none of it captured the imagination...
by all means if you come up with a good plan then resurrect the idea in a thread, you will have a supporter right here. Its never too late for an idea, especially a good one

We could always mod a Ground Combat system but we'd need to use a good 3d engine for it. Half Life 2 anyone?

You know what might work well is to just add some factors to the current system. Ships, orbitals, structures would all still be factors but you could also buy marine divisions (or equivalent) that would add a certain factor to defence. Taking this one step further, troop transports could actually just be treated as transports with a certain troop capacity, but the attacking element would be the marine divisions and supporting ships. In some ways the marine divisions would be treated like orbitals; however, they could be moved from system to system and there would be a maintenance cost. You could even factor in experience levels based on training and combat experience. Marine divisions could take partial damage and still be repaired (troop replacements). Battle casualties would determine major vs minor victories & defeats and impact upon empire morale. These features would add an additional strategic element to ground combat and empire management of defensive and offensive forces, while not adding a new operational or tactical combat element that could unbalance the game.

The easiest way of having marine divisons would simply be adding an extra building to the game.
They could add say...40% ground combat or something. You could make them all different, like for the Federation, it would be Starfleet Marines, for the Klingons, it would be Warrior Defenders, and so on. (With better names, of course... )
I imagine that it will be easy to add buildings to the game, since Gavin is making it as moddable as possible.
Having a 3D system where you go down to the Planet(s) and give orders etc. is going to be extremely in-depth though, and is gonna take a lot of modding. However, a few weeks/months ago, there was mention of having invasion-specific orders, such as target govt. buildings, military installations, etc.
Now don't quote me on that, coz I don't know whether it was implemented or not, but you have to admit, it would be a step in the right direction...
You could even make it more in-depth, by say destroying the military makes it easier to gain control, (Less chance of terror atatcks) but the people will resist you more later on, (Greater chance of rebellion) or destroying govt. buildings means the people will be easier to control, (Less chance of rebellion) but you still have to worry about remaining military units/installations (Much greater risks of terrorist attacks) and so on.
What do people think?

Nice Ideas. But would we have the option of viewing the combat in all its glory?

As far as I know...no.
I'm not one of the devs though, so they may have an ace or two up their sleeves. It is only 5/6 weeks to go, i'm sure we'll cope with the anticipation... (Check out the diseases thread...)
