I'm a third year student in the field of Biomedical Engineering. It appears to be a rather rare and new field of science (and medicine).
It's aim is to engineer mechanical (or biological even!) tools to cure, prognose, etc. people. Or other technical assets to medicine in general. All sorts of scans, CAT, CT, MRI, etc. are our field of expertise. As are mechanical prosthesisses and even chemical antidotes, probes, etc.
It's a realy exciting study! Though difficult...

I'm going to study physics from october. (I'll stay at Hannover with my parents .) It'll presumably take five years for my diploma and another two years for the doctoral level. (And another twenty years for the professorship )

i was under the impression that it took 4 years to get to masters, then three to get a doctorate, then as soon as you lecture you become a professor.
hmm id love to do the lecture circuit

It's germany after all.
And since we had really great german scientists (Einstein, Planck, Heisenberg to name just a few), I think it's quite okay to have five years to the diploma.

Isn't this a small world. In three weeks time, I am starting an International Relations course at Aberystwyth.

Don't worry, when I was younger, I pronounced it as Aberwiff-waff! (Seriously!)
I'm studying Environmental Health at UWIC (University of Wales Institute, Cardiff) My friends were worried when I told them I was studying at an Institute...
It's an interesting course, and extremely varied, as it involves everything from the law, to food hygiene, to building inspections. My lecturers are great as well...alhough the head of the department looks strikingly similar to my old chemistry teacher, which isn't a good thing...

Mastress, an Institute makes me think of you being locked up. I wont ask what your old chemistry teacher looked like
Mangan, there's a Star Trek society at Aber

I won't be joining. In order to keep some sense of social existence, I am going to be a silent fan (except on the internet).

indeed we do...
it takes 4 years to do a degree in engineering (3 study and 1 placement)
another year for masters
another 3 years for phd, but you dont have to do a masters to do a phd
you can be a lecturer without having a phd, but to be a professor you have to publish alot of research and be chartered. (as far as i know)

What do you expect? Welsh accommodation is far cheaper.

Is that your only reason for being here? Get out English scum!
Cdrwolfe, i've got a friend at UWE. What campus are you at? I doubt you know him though, he's doing an Accountancy course. (Bean counter)
My course is a four year course, but the third year is spent on placement. I've already done some work experience though, so that won't exactly be a busy year...

Not at all. Aberystwyth is world renowned for the course I am doing. Infact they were the first to put the course on their prospectus in around 1919.

Aberystwyth, although being isolated for most seems to provide a very good atmosphere for all, from what i've seen, i wouldn't mind going there myself

Seeing as I don't drink, and I don't actually live in Cardiff, I haven't got a clue what the social life is like with UWIC. I have made friends, but there's not really any point in going out.
Besides, i've got you guys and the game!
