its called civisalation 4 (that the wrong spelling). It is a stradgy game with france england and all included, good game, but botf is better than civ 3. in my humble opinion...

Civ 2 was THE turn based strategy game of about 5-7 years ago! It's about earths history. You start as a civilization in the stone age and you build your empire and advance up until the present, developping technology and building wonders of the world, etc.
You found new cities and make your old ones grow while building up a vast military to crush you opponents. I am realy surprised you haven't heard of it. Civ 1 was THE game in which turn based strategy all begun in the first place!

Here's a nice, big review of the game: (There are three pages, remember to click the link at the bottom to go to the next page)
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/civilizationiv/preview_6129411.html
Oh, and some videos: (They're quite big, even though they are zipped, so don't bother unless you're patient or have a fast connection - and have winzip)
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/civilizationiv/index.html?q=civ+4
And the company line for those who want to know what the devs say about the game:
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/civilizationiv/factsheet_6124120.html
It does make a change to BOTF, but nothing can beat BOTF. They tried to make Civ 4 in response to BOTF2, but it won't work...

Depends what you like really. There have been many incarnations of the game of the years - it isn't just Civ 1, Civ 2, Civ 3, there are versions like Civ 2: Test Of Time, Civ 2: Call To Power, and so on.
...
I have played on Civ 1, and that is the best game if you like classic, no-frills gaming. It can be quite funny at times as well. Prepare to be appalled when it comes to graphics though, don't expect Doom-type graphics or anything.
...
Civ 2 and Civ 2: Call To Power, I haven't been on, but I do have Civ 2: Test Of Time. It comes with several Scenarios/game types that add to the game. You can play the standard game where you go from 5000BC to 2000AD ( Very advanced) There is also an extended game, where you go to 2500AD, and get to colonise Alpha Centauri at the end of the game!
There is the Fantasy map, where you play as races such as the Goblins and Dwarves, and there is also the Midgard Scenario, which is quite a challenge actually. It is a re-work of the Fantasy map type, but there is a proper storyline to the game, and several changes to the rules and victory conditions.
There is even a space-based map type, and you have to go around colonising a planet that you supposedly crashed-landed on. You soon realise there are other survivors, and you have to race against them to colonise the rest of the system (There is another planet, a Gas Giant, and a space platform to colonise)
...
Civ 3 is 'more advanced' than the previous games, and the graphics have been greatly improved. The city views can be beautiful at times, and the Diplomacy is far better then in the previous versions. The 'special goods' (Such as Ivory, Gems, Spices, etc.) can actually be seen on the map as well, so expect your enemies to be near to such resources.
The game also comes with an editor, so you can create your own map types and scenarios. I've used that a lot.
...
As for Civ 4 - wait and see.

Err...it IS Matress - you know, the thing you sleep on? (Which is actually spelt Mattress, but I had Dyslexic fingers when I first signed onto the site... )
I just told the story of where my name came from on another thread...can't find it now though.
Let's just say my name comes from the innocence of youth, a need to win, and friends that loathe playing games against me...

I'd definately have to disagree with ya there. Botf1 is a fine game, I've lost days/weeks of my life playing it. But comparing just quality of gameplay, Civ 2 and 3 both blow botf out of the water. I mean, lets be realistic people, how many of you would play buggy ol' botf so much if it was the same quality game, but had nothing to do with star trek? Probably not me.

Btw if u really want a good turn based game then dont get civ games and try to get a copy of Colonization. It mint, you have been sent from ur king from either spain/england/france/dutch and another i think. Then you go out like colombus and discover the new world and you can settle there and build towns to fotresses and trade with natives and also trade back in the europe dock screen, you can travel in boats rom Man of Wars to galleons. You build things and train specialists in ur towns to do things. You can discover gold deposits and also work the land to make them different like forest can be flattened to make roads or convert swamps into fields sorta thing. Its dos game but i enjoyed it so much when i was in about a teenager i lol issed alot of school cos of it
I played it on amiga but its just as good on the pc. Its a 10 meg download and i recommend u get the windows version which is 10-12 meg. You can get it at (home of the underdog) or any abandoneware sites.
The aim of the game is to be self productive and when u think u have enough force then its time to declair independance and then the king will send his army after you if u survive then u win the game

Colonization is a fun game, havent played it for years, but it is fun.
BTW, my little rant yeserday caused me to play my copy of Civ 3: Conquests. My Greek army is in the process of completely demolishing the Indians (India indians, not Native Americans), mainly because I stole their only supply of Iron ore away, so they cant build any troops better than archers, or horsemen. He he heh.

Well my Civ 2: Test of Time box says 1999 on the back of it, UnDated, so the rest of the Civ games are older than that.
I've found some link if you wanna find out exactly how scary the games are. Gamespot has some reviews, screenshots, and even movies of the games.
Civ 1 (1991, no movies or screenshots, just a review of "one of the greatest games of all time")
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/civilization/index.html?q=civilization
Civ 2: Call to Power (31 march 1999, no movies)
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/civilizationcalltopower/index.html?q=civilization+2
Civ 2: Test of Time (31 July 1999, screenshots only, ignore their rating - I like this game! )
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/civ ... lization+2
Call to Power 2 (19 november 2000, this one has a movie, and I didn't know this game existed! 8O)
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/calltopower2/index.html?q=civilization+2
Civ 3 (30 october 2000, lotsa movies)
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/civilization3/index.html?q=civilization
Civ 3: Conquests (11 april 2003, lotsa movies and development stuff)
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/civ3conquests/index.html?q=civilization
Oh, and if you have any of those games yourselves guys, they usually have patches/updates for those games in the link i've given you.

Yeah, i like it as well! From my point of view it's the last really well-programmed Civ-sequel as all the others tend to get to much in detail and turning to take to long on a really big map!

So what's your favourite game type?
My favourite is the sci-fi one, although I occaisionally play the Midgard Scenario.
It can be fun to mod the stats, of course, just like with BOTF. I've had cities of size 96 before now (46,960,000 people) - not that I edit the game...too much...
Do you edit the game, or just play 'normally?'

Civ 3 Conquests easily the best of the bunch.
Multiplayer is quite fun on that too, especially 1 city elimination. Anyone here from the civ ladder?
Back to BOTF2... 2 questions,
Will be multiplayer? and if so.. how will that work considering the info that only feds are in as playable.. i.e. will every human player just be feds for time being.
Any chance of a pocket pc conversion, as its not exactly a resource hungry game by the sounds of it, and top ppc are quite capable, mine plays quake, sim city 2000 no probs.

Multiplayer is gonna be in BOTF2, colusso.
Gavin has configured the game to work even for people with a 56k modem, so uploads/download during play will be minimised. At the last count, 50 turns would require only 50kb of uploaded/downloaded info per player, so I doubt there will be any problems with the speed of the game in that respect.
The actual amounts may be higher than this though, it was quite a while since gavin said that. We'll know for sure in two and a half weeks, of course.
A pocket PC version...almost no chance sorry. Gavin is developing the game completely in his own time, and Jig, Iwulff, and everyone is adding their own input as well. Even then, it's taken almost a year to make the game. Gavin does have a life to lead afterall.
Still, you could always wait until a month or two after the game is released, then ask him sweetly...

I've played Pirates. Its a fun game, but it can get old pretty quickly. One a scale of 1-10, I' give it a 6.5-7. Try to find it used if you can.

i've played pirates but as Rigel said, it can get old. Civilization has more variety and strategy that Pirates.
I have played all of the civ series except the expansion packs (they know we want multiplayer so why not just include it in the 1st release- at least i think civ 4 will have multi)
I remember playing civ1 without reading any of the rules and i never thought about defending my cities with units so i didn't get very far until i read the civpedia thing and worked it out. i liked the movies and the music that went with them in civ 2 (also alpha centauri which is a very similar game) and i was dissappointed when civ 3 didn't have them . So now i can't wait for civ 4.
P.S. other games i am waiting for: Black and White 2, and some other game that i forget the name of that is far away from being released.

- Yeah, of course I've modded the game. One big city with all the wonders in it and a ressource output of 1200 is fun sometimes

Except when the pollution gets too bad or you have nothing to actually build left.
And I meant properly modding the game, not just selecting the cheat options.
