I would have to say that I will enjoy the concept of era's on this game the most.

Era's aren't exactly gonna be shown as a specific event or something, if you were thinking that, whatistitus.

They will simply be 'shown' as progressing technology, access to newer ships, and so on.

A LONG time ago, I proposed having new interfaces every time you 'entered' a new era of development. (So you could have TOS-style screens, then TNG, and so on)

Whilst it would have been awesome eye candy, the idea was rejected because it would simply take too much to program, and would mean that all the interfaces would have to be remade - the devs wouldn't exactly be happy about that, especially since the game is practically complete! 8O

You can still use the Stardate or your level of technology as a guide to the era that you are in though.

I'm sure its easy enough to make your own era's so you probably could change it yourself at the right time.

Should make a difference as games are going to be long affairs

lol It will at that. Matress why would that be difficult the program? A different interface would be activated when you go so far in the game. Unless you had to unlock them and one you reached a certain level you could use it if you wanted?

Yeah, I have to admit, I'm a bit curious to see exactly how Gavin chose to implement different interfaces for each race. I've been tossing around the idea of developing a similar game for some time now, but most of what I have is still on paper. The idea of a fully moddable game with different, resolution-independent interfaces for each race automatically implies a fairly complex, themable UI toolkit. The little angel on my shoulder tells me this is the way to go, but the little devil on the other shoulder tells me to "ghetto-rig" it. I suppose it's all academic, as I probably won't have time to sit down and finalize a design until the end of the semester.
