I dont think this has been adressed yet, but will the demo be just uploaded to an HTTP or FTP server? Because a server will run out of bandwidth fast if 1000 people are downloading a 400megabyte file at a time.
Might i suggest using Bit torrent? Then you guys wont have to worry about bandwitdh if you have a limit.
EDIT - this is just for WHEN the demo is released. I know perfectally well that it isnt released yet.

I'd still suggest using BitTorrent if you're on dial up though (even the game will be released in sections)
Some other members are going to host the d/l aswell i think - good on you guys

Firstly, the beta as such doesn't exist - Gavin isn't gonna release it in a testing stage, he's gonna do as much testing he can himself, then he's gonna release the demo.
Then, over the following weeks and months, he's gonna release updates to the demo. (Probably on saturdays, but this isn't definite and will be prone to change as all things are)
The individual updates will do different things, such as add extra races, or models, or graphics, will enhance combat, or add multiplayer modes, and so on.
The demo will be upgraded in this way to the full release version - this allows everyone to download it in chunks, and also allows people to start playing the game, before it has actually been completed.
This also gives the modders more time to gt to grips with the game and to start their work.
As CVN quoted from Jig, the site has unlimited bandwidth (Ever wondered why your avatar can be bigger the maximum limit?) and as TrekBoy also mentioned, there are people who have agreed to host the download on their sites as well.
Because of all this, I doubt there will be much of a problem when it comes to downloading the game, or its mods.
You have to remember though, that Gavin is still sorting out his personal stuff, so of course the game will be on the back burner until then. This doesn't mean the game has been scrapped, it just means we will have to wait for it.
It is up to him when he releases it.

Bit torrent is a good idea regardless of bandwidth as so many people use bit torrent it will mean better circulation and a bigger fan base.

Just out of interest, i'm on a 1mb connection and i usually get 100kbs on most downloads. How much difference would BitTorrent make to a fast connection?

I have a 2.2meg connection, and I average at about 230k. The only filesharing application I use is Kazaalite 2.42 - it's the only program i've been able to get to work on my computer.
I've tried to download torrent files before, but all I end up with is an unusable filetype - would the same thing happen to me if I tried to download the Torrent version?

Little files with a .torrent extension?
If THAT is the problem, maybe try reading this

You need to use a torrent client with that torrent file. Like Azerous (forgive the spelling someone correct me )
I wouldn't mind hosting, I've got bulldog broadband 8meg down 512k up

thier have a job shutting down edonkey, even if edonkey does shut down, the programme will still work with any other server thats up and edonkey accounts for only 5% of the p2p servers, they would literally have to take every server to court and then just more would replace them

Ive learned that people find out about things very fast on the torrent network, and it would spread quite quickly.

at the end of 2004, bit torrent accounted for 30% of the total internet usage. By now its got to be much much higher.

Higher? For as far as I know the entire protocol died out since they closed suprnova. I don't know any people who use it anymore and I also don't know any locations to download stuff from with BitTorrent. If you know of some, could you please PM them to me, General?

OCremix ( http://www.ocremix.org/) is a site that makes remixes of music from games.
You can apparently download their music in torrent format, although it has never worked for me. (For the reasons above )
Oh, a word of warning though, the site uses quite a lot of pop-under advertising, and the google toolbar isn't able to block all of it.
Please don't kill me for advertising, Jig, Centurion did ask afterall...

If you read my post again, Matress, you will see I asked for a PM. Obviously, I wouldn't want anybody to start advertising in public. So don't point any fingers to me.. I wash my hands in innocence!

no, just when suprnova was alive it was a lot easier to download stuff. Nowadays, a couple sites try to mimic the sucess of Suprnova. I'll pm you the links for the ones I use.
everyone i know didnt just give up on the best filesharing netowrk of all time just cause one good site closed.

lets just put it this way, thier gonna have a pretty hard job, as thiers ports of edonkey from all over the world, plus once you have the software, all you need is a compatible server and it works, meaning they would have to take each servers owner to court and then another would just replace it

I thought the general feeling around was that BitTorrent was the best?
