I don't really spend much time listening to 'popular music' - the only music CD's I have are The Best of Bond, (All the music from the James Bond films) the Lord of the Rings Soundtracks, and a few CD's that my sister gave me!
I listen to the radio on my way to uni, and if i'm not playing a game, I listen to remixes of music from games i've played...I really am sad...

Pink floyd for sure
2nd up, MUSE, as i like there stuff. Especially Feeling Good and New Born.
EDIT-
My interestes change fast but the above are great but in general my other favs would include.
Madness (uk band, House of fun and driving in my car were good )
The irish band erm The Corrs i think, with the three lasses in, as i like one of them
Blues brothers, i know not a proper band but like the band from the movie with jake and elwood (Dan and John) in as vocals. Just bought there new dvd actually.
Darkness is ok i supose, nice emotional music i supose.
So there is a few others i like that are a band and not just 1 singer with some computerized crap lol. Like most of the songs these days have.

It's been along time since I ever heard anyone metion Rush!
But to get back to the topic in question, I find it a difficult one to answer because my tastes are so broad. So I will answer it in a way as that the band appeal to many and have stood up to the sands of time.
So as much as i like REM but I feel many people would not have listend to their stuff before 1990. So I will go for a band that has hits in 4 decades and that has to be U2.
But ask me the question tomorrow and could change my tune

I'd put Muse up there in my favourite list, second behind REM. I'm surprised that so many people haven't heard of them, they've been together for 20 years now

Iron Maiden..... Hendrix was an innovator but is was overated on the speed of his playing. Rush ahs the world best drummer, Neal Peart, R.E.M, is well, I;m kinda neutral toward them. Nickelback, the jury is still out on them in Canada. U2, I hate Bono with a passion, he answers questions that most people arnet asking. His hearts in the right place, but he come off as a major A##H^^LE, and consquently the sight and sound of him sends me into convulsions.

You must not be too familiar with Jimi Hendrix to say that kind of thing... I actually haven't heard much of his recorded stuff, I listen almost entirely to Live music when it comes to hendrix and Led Zeppelin, and that's when he does his best in my opinion. I generally like classic rock, maybe it's because of the guitar. I play guitar and am always interested to hear awesome guitar playing. In modern bands it seems their more interseted in vocals, which is alright sometimes, but I generally don't listen to music to hear people sing.

The best band in the whole for geeks to listen to? Well, that honour would have to go to Rush. Rush is the best geek rock hands down.
Some runners up are as follows:
Yes (for older guys)
Dream Theater
Porcupine Tree (very excellent band)
Marillion.
