I've seen time travel has been brought up alot recently on these boards. I was wondering if anyone has seen the John Titor story. It was very big on the net a while back.

To cut a long story short, John Titor was meant to have been a guy from 2036, who had traveled back in time for various reasons, part of his mission was to observe the reaction on the internet of him making himself heard.

Still today there is alot of debate whether he was real, he gave very long and technical responses to peoples questions on an internet forum. Alot of people have taken his answers and "proved" he was fake, but there are alot of very bright people who think he was real. He made some predictions of some future events which DID happen, to name a few the Iraq War, the stint of natural disasters we've has recently and othes.

Needless to say its worth a good read, check out one of the many websites http://www.johntitor.com/ Do you think John was real!?

THE MYSTERY CONTINUES

Complete rubbish. At first, there is NO chance Humanity is going to develop time travel within the next 30 years.

The only thing I realy found while searching for him was a story about a nuclear world war in 2015. My guess is the guy watched realy too much star trek (as I believe that's what happens there as well..)
But real sollid premonitions about things that realy did happen I haven't seen yet. And even if I did, that wouldn't explain time travel. Funny, though: that the explanation I searched for on that site appears to be "under construction".

So leaves only one unanswered question: why would someone do something like this. If someone realy came from the future it would be only logical for him to maintain a low profile and trying to make sure no-one spots him. Besides, he probably has no home here, (no computer even) and would probably go in, go out within the same day only to complete his mission. Why would he even care about "warning us".
Thus the only reason someone would do this is either: he was bored and thought it was fun, then quit when it became too serious. Or he is doing some experiment and wants to know how people react to it.

I dont think the time travel bit is what they are questioning, its more the details of what he said.

Timetravel in 30 years isnt as silly as it sounds, very unlikely but not impossible. Theres alot of info about this guy on the net, go to the site i gave and there are soe others as well, its very interesting.

what a pile of bilge, and you say some people believe in this? ok he says their is a civil war in america in 2005, better happen soon then :lol: or how about the face that he was in a shotgun infantry unit? what a joke, how long do you think a bunch of guys with shotguns would last against men with fully automatic rifles? not long a can tell you. one other thing, he said he was born in 98, so when he was 7 this war starts, it lasts 7 years then a big nuke war. so he was running around at 13 to 14 years of age with a shotgun killing the enemy (which just happens to be the federal goverment) :lol: :lol: :lol: sorry but a 14 year old with a shotgun against trained men with rifles, give me a break. this guy is full of crap, whats the betting when the war don`t happen he will say it`s because he stopped it :lol: so why not stop hitler, shoot him as a chils and thus prevent ww2, or shoot the guy who killed duke ferdinand, and stop ww1, he seems to like to use the pearl harbour analogy, if you stop that attack, the namerica stays out of the war. well dur, stop the war then, kill hitler and those who helped him. once again, great big pile of crap :lol:

Ehm..
he said the civil war took place in 2015, not 2005. So he was 17 when the fighting began. Still rather youngh, but at least it's possible.
It remains a load of crap, though :lol:

There is a civil war in the United States that starts in 2005. That conflict flares up and down for 10 years. In 2015, Russia launches a nuclear strike against the major cities in the United States (which is the "other side" of the civil war from my perspective),
i read before i post :lol:

Whilst WW2 was obviously 'bad', I personally don't think erasing it from history would be a good thing.

If it wasn't for WW2, many of the technologies that we take for granted today may not have been developed in the first place, (Or would have been delayed by a few decades at least) we wouldn't have things like the United Nations, and Naziism (However you spell it) could have become a major influence on the world. 8O

Long story short, the death, horror, and destruction that resulted may have been tragic but we haven't had any World Wars since, have we? (I haven't yet heard of Iraq being described as a World War)

Fingers crossed, we never will have one - even if that means Zefram never gets to build the Phoenix... :o

...

I've never heard of this John guy before, and from reading that stuff, I totally agree with the guys. The guy was having a laugh or summat. There is absolutely no way he is from the future as far as I care.

Still a good read though. :lol:

Well i have to say im surprised, for a site full of sci-fi fans i would have thought this wuold have gathered more enthusiasm, but then agian i guess being different on this forum is something which gets your Janitorial Duty, as is the price of questioning the Admin.

If you look at some of the background a little more you'll see why this thing made such a stir, fair enough its probably all total lies, but hey isnt there a little bit of you that wishes it was real?

You are very true about one thing, comrade cabin boy... this is a site full of people who believe in SCIENCE fiction. I, myself hasn't yet found a SINGLE word of science in the articles prescribed. And believe me, I searched.

So perhaps, you can explain us why exactly this caused such a 'stir'... Because I realy do no see it. I see only one story. About a civil war in the US which has still 2 months to start and which is going to envoke a third world war.
Besides that, I do not even see a signal about other events.

And I willl repeat that I find it typical that the link about 'time travel' is 'still under construction'.

I am easily convinced about many things, comrade. I am a scientist that believes a whole lot of so called 'spiritual things'. But this is just plain bullshit. I'm sorry.

I don't even have to read it to raise the BS flag :roll:

If anybody wants to ponder something, take the Drake equation, plug in all the latest data..

Then take your answer. Maybe slash it down by 1/4 with some 'god' factor like maybe it's truly harder than we think. Then ponder how we must look like insignificant worms to anybody watching such that they wouldn't bother to at least say "Hello down there, buggers. Now hand over all your onions" (which they happen to find to make an extremely rare chemical that powers their expansion across a million galaxies)

Also keep in mind on the "percentage of life bearing planets where intelligent life evolves" input that the Earth screwed up with Dino's, and even if it we got wiped out after about the same time they had, or took care of ourselves, Earth would have another 65 to 70 shots at evolving something decent before the Sun started to warm us up too much.

I personally came up with 328,125 for our own. Multiply it by the number of galaxies in the universe, and you get say 32,812,500,000,000,000. In other words, someone, somewhere, is probably laughing at us :lol:

Comrade? you an ex-soviet or something? People seemed to be rather annoyed at this for whatever reason. It was one of the biggest sites being passsed round offices in the UK, this is according to Yahoo, so at very least it was interesting enough to attract attention.

I dunno why people seem so adverse to even seeing this as a bit of fun, the agression this has caused is rather worrying, i man using the workd "comrade" alone should be an arrestable offence.

Two things... At first I use the word 'comrade' (or the literary Dutch translation of it) almost every day. For some reason it seems to envoke a hostile reaction. Quite strange as it is synonymous for 'friend'.
Second, everyone connects the word with Sovjets for some reason, altough they realy spoke Russian, you know. There are very little Sovjets who would have ever used that word. It's just a propagandic fable the Americans made up and created an averse for it.

Quote:
using the word should be an arrestable offense

This just got to be the funniest thing in the entire thread! :lol:
(altough, to answer your question: the Titor storry made me laugh as well) ;)

It isn't a lack of interest in the story - it's a lack of belief.

Everyone so far has said they found it funny, so they must've at least found it interesting!

Considering that there are now two pages of posts AND there hasn't been any spam, I think that shows something about what people think, Jig. :wink:

I think the whole page is a big advertisment for this book. John Tritor, I guess, is American, because the futere world line is dominated by the US. The European Union whiped out, Russia as US's biggest trading partner...
*crazy* Why should Russia attack the USA or why should Europe go to war with the US and loose it?

I think the guy is crazy and looking for attention. It was interesting to read, but it didn't get very much of my attention.

The word "comrade" I'm using in German very often and noone is angry about it. Yes, it's a word to adress a fellow communist, but we talked much about Communism in history and the true idea of Marxism is not bad at all.
(Maybe you cannot beliefe it, but we came to the solution, that the UFP is a
communistic power)

I think I can describe myself as a Communist

You have a good point, its a good "idea" but in reality Communism doesnt work, i mean look at the only communist power left now, China, perhaps the most capatalist Communist power ever! lol They are only COmmunist by the fact they opress thier people and lack freedom of speech or democracy.

Id agree that UFP is a kind of communism, but i wudnt use that exact analogy. Human nature dictates that at the moment in history communism isnt practical or possible, i mean the main problem i have with it is the lack of meritocracy, i can work my ass off workin to be a doctor for 7 yrs and work long hours as a dr saving lives yet be seen as the same as a guy who dosses about and cleans toliets, hows that fair!?

hnyaa.....china is the only communist super power but not the only communist country, cuba and korea for example. you can slow time down but you have to go to staggering speeds to slow it by a micro second and impossible speeds to bring it to a stand still, to actualy travel back you'd be looking at using all the power of every sun in our galaxy and combine it with an engine so big it would be galactic in size. we all like the idea of a Tardis like machine but it aint gonna happen, I think the closest we are ever going to get is stasis and theoreticaly black holes... if you think about it if it takes the power of a black hole to slow time down what in hells chance does humanity have in stopping it or even make it go backwards?....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
wtf? im a cadet? *Hmph* the cheek, im gonna tell the Praetor on you!
You all had the UFP-Is-Communist debate? too bad I missed it. I wish I could find a nice long article on SyFyPortal that talked about it, and they made a pretty good case for it..
Pretty easy to have a command economy when a replicator makes anything the masses need with just a verbal command I guess..
Really never understood what the average joe did though.. Replicators remove probably half or 3/4 the need for manufacturing jobs, automation removes some of whats left, and not everybody can be a scientist, engineer, biologist, doctor, or some other elite profession.. Not enough ships for everybody to get wanderlust and join up with a crew.. What, planets with 10 billion people with nothing truly better to do than farm, FOR PLEASURE? :? :?:
i kinda assumed everybody in the UFP runs resteraunts and have strange fascinations about the 20th century, I also assumed earth turned into a global mardi gras.. communism can be good as long as everybody leaves you alone but it can be stagnant, think of a khibutz or the amish, just unfortunately communism in the 20th century has been launched every time by power mad dictators, I think of the UFP as a Democratic Communism, sure you get the necesities of life for free but the more you put into a society the more your entitled to take out, if the federation doesnt have money how inna hell can people afford to gamble at quarks or eat at resteraunts?, even the upcoming star trek online game had to put money in because they said it couldn't run without it, also time travel from 20 30 odd is a pile of pants it's almost as potty as the the above mentioned amish building a full sized working model of the Enterprise
whilst i don't buy this guys story at all, i'm amazed at the skepticism in regards to just how technologically advanced we'll be in thirty years.
thirty years ago the worlds foremost computers had less processing power than your average pocket calculator has today...
as for medicine, i do believe we'll find the cure for cancer within the next fifteen years, although aids is an altogether different proposition (medical science has found the cure to precisely zero virii in hundreds of years of trying)...
I totally agree. Not only are we progessing at a great speed, but the rate we are progressing is also increasing. a fwe hundred years ago 20 years would have brought little change, well 20 years ago i was one, and things have changed loads since then, u go to 1985 and show them a handheld PDA with satnav and mobile phones with video, bluetooth and pictures and the ability to access the internet *the internet!! i hear you cry!!** yes thats another technological advancement.
In 30 years almost anything is possible.
I know there is alot of science about space travel and that and how going the speed of light is "impossible" but frankly (taking into account my bias as a star trek idealist) i think not only is it possible but liekly to happen within our lifetimes!!
Open your minds people! stop being so skeptical!
Funny. Since the things you mention have nothing to do with Communism. In Nazi-germany there also was a lack of freedom and speech. Though it was exactly the political oposite of Communism.
Communism is the way to go. The system itself is paradise. Only mankind makes it hell.
Humanity is simply not ready to become communistic. Not until all wars and things like that are over.
The reason development will not go that fast is not because we cannot. Technically we can go so far. Politics. That's the reason why it won't work. If governments are willing to spend billions on a random war but refuse to spend a few hundred million to cure diseases like aids or cancer things will take a long time.
Space travel and things like that are cool. And certainly worth exploring. But before any main efforts are made, let us please clean up the mess on our own world before we start contaminating others with it.
Yes, alot of thinks will be posible in 30 years....maybe they will invent tech we don't now nou.......where we never thougt about :? But we'n we have a cure for cancer and aid's surely there will be other deseses
oh dont get me wrong, we can and HAVE sent things at light speed, sub atomic particles fired from a particle accelerator, but to send that one particle it takes the power of an dedicated atomic powerplant, as for light speed in our life times for human travelers, 1) first we have to invent a new massive power source that would outstrip cold fusion, 2) we would have to discover artificial gravity which would lead to inertial dampeners, 3) new metals/alloys that could take the stress of such speeds, 3) force fields to deflect space debris or indestructable materials that can withstand matter hitting it at lightspeed, 4) a computer so powerfull that it can predict a ships path and make course corrections at faster than light processing speeds 5) an engine that can take the heat of a thousand suns without melting, 6) a pilot suicidal enought to actualy fly the thing,.
1985.. i remember it well =) mobile phones were huge black things that cost a fortune to buy/use. youd get 30 minutes from a full charge, the internet had just been born and 3 years later id have my first internet experience, it comprised of one huge global chat room, in 85 your pocket computer systems started, Donkey kong was my fave, where will we be in 30 years? wafer thin laptops with holographic screens which act as tv, video, mopile communications with satalite uplinks, from experience the ideas for pocket computers n such were always there, we just got better at making stuff then refining it. unless we end up experiencing some kind of extra terrestrial interdiction i cant see it happening, a babylon 5 sort of technology tree is more believable than trek.
Im not a huge fan of B5 but id tend to agree with that ye.
I dont knwo what that other guy was on about the whole Nazi-germany thing, didnt quite get what he was on about. The problem with Communism is it has never had democracy, thats a biggy, also you are not singled out for working hard, so why try? Humanity is humanity, you can slag it off until the cows come home, but you could say the same about putting a small dear infront of a lion, its nature, nothign we can do about it.
We need political systems and models which are based upon the social system we live in at the time. Communism is open to huge corruption and mis-treatment, it is NOT the way to go. Star Trek is not communist, its something else, we dont see enough of earth and that to tell, but it is. Who decides who gets a crappy apartment and who gets the "kirk" esk cabin as featured in generations? not everyone can have that?
Oh and if curing cancer and aids was a matter of a few hundred million trust me it wud have been done by now, its not always some big conspiracy.
And the war in Iraq which i presume you were on about??
We can never put a price on freedom and the right to choose our leaders. Whatever is going on there now, the Iraqi people can choose who leads them and who they live thier lives. Sure at the moment they risk being blown up, but a wise man once sed, its better to go down standing tall with pride than kneeing on the floor under a tyrants foot.
Not everyone who supported and still supports the war is a neo-conservative religious fanatic ok. We all see the atrocities on TV, peopel being killed and gased, we then continue eating our dinner and forget it, while over in another land people are dieing and being opressed. Well we finally did something about it and thank god we did.
