They don't tend to last long, but 11k point-per-day people are out there.. [H]ardOCP has four or five.. that's at least like.. well.. if I manage lets figure 900ppd (random guess, feels about right) from 11ghz of rather new processor cores currently folding, then people like that must have at least 134Ghz worth of processors, and if they're all Intel or a heavier mix of older processors, could easily be 250 or 300ghz worth of processors..

It's high-production people like that that I know are somewhere on the forum, so my humble 500 - 1000ppd production doesn't go to my head very fast ;)

There was MidnightFreak at [H]ardOCP who had probably 50k ppd, he had hundreds and hundreds of computers folding, but it ended up consuming so much of his free time that he ended up stopping cold-turkey. He appears to have one tiny computer still folding for him, he's getting 12 points per day at the moment, but still :P

Wonder how much of that was himself being bothered, and how much was his wife....

I don't have that big of a computer 'farm' folding, but.... every winter I do tend to heat my room and office with computers running F@H -- thats not obsessive, is it? 8O

Maybe just a little?

Well it saves on heating costs.

...

Silvercliff, i've finally done your avatar. I actually made quite a big mistake in the colour gradients coz I thought your avatar was 30 frames, not 21. It doesn't matter though, coz it isn't that noticable.

If you dn't see what I mean, look at the speed at which your name fades in compared to how it fades out - it takes 15 frames to fade in, but only 7 to fade out!

...

Anyone noticed my post number? 2222!

How long do you guys think it'll be before I reach 3333?

*Edit - you've beaten me by 35 points Azrael! Well done!

It won't be for long though...*

See, silvercliff; just like that, and you'd have production closer to mine, and at least probably twice that of anybody else! it's not too hard to do sometimes, with a little luck

When I say 4ghz, I mean total; 2 Athlon MPs.

I did have them a 2.2ghz at one point, but.. crap! My baby hasn't been the same ever since :( It's the only OC I've ever done thats truly backfired. The board can't lock the PCI bus frequency, so it ramps up along with the FSB. Eventually, it scrambled the HD, so had to reinstall the OS. Then, upon removing the overclock, it wouldn't boot right -- I'd click the power button, and it'd come alive, but not even progress to the POST.. which is strange, since the POST is nearly the first thing executed. If I turn it on, let it set for a moment, then hit the reset switch, then it goes along fine..

That's with a dual-processor board though; single processor boards will act different, so, mileage may vary. If your board happens to lock the PCI bus frequency then 2.2ghz should be easy enough. Mine were also water cooled, but don't know if it was necessary.

I've had that problem with post before.

Options:

1) Remove the CMOS battery from the mobo and leave it out for 5mins

2) Turn the PSU switch to the off position for 1 min, turn it back to on then hold down Insert and press the power button on your pc - you should get in to POST

I did some rough math, and it looks like our total team production is 1428 - 1666, based on what I saw get posted for our total score about a week ago and what it is now.

89006 (team in 2000th) - 30333 (our total) = 58673 / 1500ppd = 39 days until we start showing up on stats sites radar screens.

124 days until 1000th place though, so, get on borging more machines.

I just got a job at a PostNet store for part time extra income, and there's 7 computers there.. I suspect 5 are borg-able.. all of them but the two 'mission critical' POS systems. They SHOULD be able to run it, but if they ran it, and crashed, it'd be my head, so.. Anyway, It'll probably take me a while though; they're rather weighted down with spyware, random junk, and the occasional virus/worm.. but they're fairly high end: 3.0ghz P4, a 3500+ Athlon 64 are two of them.

Nice! That'll add maybe another 750 ppd if we're lucky

Only 39 days :P

Well with an extra 750ppd, that'll be 2250ppd.

So that means 89006 - 30936 = 58070

58070 / 2250 = 26 days to greatness! :D

So that means we will beat team 1000 in 83 days!

Of course, this is based on a constant output and the other teams NOT getting more points.

If anyone wanted to check, this is where we will appear in 26 days:

I wont be able to get them folding for a little while still yet, but yeah.

And teams in the 1000s dont seem to have significant output either, so we'll be closing the gap with them somewhat steadily.

There's a lot of room for growth for our team still yet though; there's lots of members here, and maybe some of them will be getting something for christmas tomorrow ;)

We could double our production pretty easy I'd figure even without some big-luck borging of a business computer network like i'm working on. I think we will, too, eventually, as more members take note.

That's wierd...my friend has the exact same problem...

Have you tried manually closing the program then restarting it?

If it doesn't work, you could try reinstalling it. (MAKE SURE YOU RE-ENTER THE RIGHT INFO!)

If that doesn't work, then I really don't know what might be wrong.

Ringold, have you got any ideas?

Sorry for the double post, but I thought it was best - i've just added HHornblower to our avatar...heh...let's just say the avatar is now officially bigger than photobucket can properly support!

Image

I'm gonna have to redesign the avatar, I know where I can save some frames if I edit it a bit - as long as you guys don't mind...

*Edit - Ok, i've done everything I possibly can, but I just can't make our avatar any smaller in size, without massively reducing the image quality and picture size. :(

I think we're gonna have to come up with a new avatar for ourselves - it simply isn't workable to have all our avatars in as they are.

We could either decide to:

 Have non-moving avatars. (Then we all get to have our own avatar, although the exact same problem will happen again one day in the future)

OR

 Keep the best one (Eg. Zahadoom's Borg battle) and leave it at that.

Image

OR

 Start from scratch and have a single, group-defining avatar (Eg. TrekBoyChris's one - the BOTF2 logo)

Image

What do you guys think?

Ye the small verson does (think of the right words lol) not look as good as the bigger version - can't we do anything to HB's avatar so we can still have to large version?

Heh...just watching the broken avatar, what do you think about what happens to your name, Billy? (The wild zooming-in effect)

It looks pretty cool, doesn't it. Shame I never programmed it that way, but never mind.

I don't mind whatever you guys decide to have as the avatar - like i said, I don't mind changing it, coz I like doing it! :)

I've occasionally had connection problems -- last time it was nForce4's built-in firewall.. that was a bugger.

I've heard some problems just work themselves out, but without knowing details, I don't know any more.

Regarding a problem I face: I have committed a folding sin.

I shall admit to it so that others need not face it.

If you notice what I just did (a 10 WU increase in a day), then you might want to consult your logs. If you dont see a big WU increase, consult the logs occasionally regardless.

A 5 WU, or even 7, wouldn't of tipped me off, but 10, plus 7-Zip crashing, warned me that horrible things were occuring in the hinterlands of my CPU. I checked my F@H logs, as F@H is nearly the most sensitive to OCing application I've ever used (save for, when its feeling in a bad mood, 7zip doing a large job), and sure enough: my last 4 WU's had crashed out!

Symptom: system instability. Cause: Bad BIOS settings/improper cooling.

Larger symptom is ever since I stuck in an extra gb of RAM, I assumed I could maintain my good OC. As the case appears to be, no such luck.

So in the end, just a friendly public service reminder to occasionally check your logs for the one message you especially never hope to see:

[06:20:47] Completed 27500 out of 250000 steps (11)
[06:37:35] Quit 101 - Fatal error: NaN detected: (ener[17])
[06:37:35]
[06:37:35] Simulation instability has been encountered. The run has entered a
[06:37:35] state from which no further progress can be made.
[06:37:35] This may be the correct result of the simulation, however if you
[06:37:35] often see other project units terminating early like this
[06:37:35] too, you may wish to check the stability of your computer (issues
[06:37:35] such as high temperature, overclocking, etc.).
[06:37:35] Going to send back what have done.
[06:37:35] logfile size: 8013
[06:37:35] - Writing 8576 bytes of core data to disk...
[06:37:35] ... Done.

Seeing it almost never ends well, and almost always ends with you, the user, playing around in your BIOS. Never ignore it, either; it's not just a software bug. One out of a thousand might be a software bug. If it's effecting F@H, it's seeping in to other programs too, and eventually a bad bit will get written somewhere, and next thing you know you're in trouble.

On another note, w007, I think pretty soon my lifetime F@H stat will finally pass 100k 8)

I've never really bothered to read my log coz it just looks like a long load of random waffle to me. :P

I have looked at occaisionally though, and i've enver seen anything like that. mind you, i've never overclocked a computer before, and wouldn't know how anyway.

So I guess i'm in the clear for future problems like that. 8)

Will you be able to fix it Ringold? :? :|

...

Edit - I was randomly clicking through the links on the folding@home site, and I came across the full team list:

http://fah-web.stanford.edu/daily_team_summary.txt

- You can find out where we are if you go on find (Press control and and f on windows computers) and enter 46574 (Our team number)

You can compare our stats to groups that are near us, and see how far we need to go to reach the top 2000.

...And we're certainly closer to the top than the bottom!

Our current rank is 3663 of 41872 groups - if anyone is interested - so we've got 1663 places to go.
