And MOE takes the lead, but no one knows what sort of WU Azrael may send in next... will it be a 44 pointer or a 600 point unit?!
And wait! This just in! EuropeKid is coming up from behind about to pwn them all!! Bogseat is just behind him as well!
.. At least, he's only 1000 back, and I thought I remembered seeing a sharp drop off in points after you two guys, so he's either leaving his computer on more or maybe I just didnt notice his points before.. Give him about a week and we might find out
Depending on those two active processors Bogseat has, he could be a real threat to the rest of the top 5.

Yeah, but there's only the teensiest of margins between us!
I wish there was a way to stop receiving small work units, though. I want the BIIIG ones!
Ringold, i've been looking at my logfile, and i'm a bit worried. I've noticed that my computer has failed 2 work units since it's been running - baring in mind I reformatted my computer only a week or so ago.
I've read that they expect the odd work unit to fail every now and then, purely because they lead to impossible situations - afterall, the Proteins that are being folded are hypothetical, so may not work in real life.
But to have 2 in straight after each other? They're supposed to be relatively rare...
I've also found that the program crashes when it downloads a new work unit. It downloads the unit fine, but the moment it initialises, that's when folding@home crashes.
If I then restart the program, it runs fine.
Do you have any idea what could be causing it?
Here's the sections of my log file with the "broken" work units:

In both cases, it says that the work files are missing - which is annoying, coz in the case of the first "broken" work unit, it was 95% complete!
Why would the files be missing though? It runs in the background on my sister's area, so she doesn't even know it exists!
And I certainly haven't done anything...
Anyways, i've got back to the 80/250 mark now... finally...

Heh, I like your sig btw..
But as far that log there... I don't know, the only problem I had with that sort of thing is my nForce4 firewall drivers would cause F@H problems, so I stopped using the firewall and all was better. You could try posting in their official forum; they tend to be really helpful.
As for the failed WU's -- that might be more concerning. If it's truly system instability, I'd seek out SuperPi, turn off F@H, and then calculate 32M. If it can finish, then I'd bet it's probably not a CPU error. Then, I'd seek out MemTest86, put it on a floppy, boot to it, and while you go to school, work, play, whatever, let it run while you're away. If it finishes at least 5 or 6 loops error free, then it's probably not a memory problem. After doing both tests, if there's no error, then you probably did just get two bum WU's.
If you get an error in MemTest, at least you know the problem is with the RAM timings. If that's the case, then we can talk over PM or AIM or something and I can try to troubleshoot it remotely. Your CPU isn't OC'd though as you've said, so I'm figuring SuperPi will finish okay...
http://www.xtremesystems.com/pi/
http://www.memtest.org/
Maybe dont worry about it though unless it happens one more time, and you catch it in the log looking just the way mine did. But if it happens again, hit up those two links there. When I was having a problem, it happened almost to every WU I was getting
As for getting big WU's repeatedly, depending on your system specs, if you setup the console right, you'd get them about like I do: 3/4 of the WU my two desktop systems get are 600 point GROMACS cores, which yield much higher points-per-day then the others.

im not using folding@home anymore
it caused a major resolution problem with my computer. screwed up all my fullscreen programs (games, etc). Whenever i would go fullscreen and press a button (such as to start a new game) it would minimize the game. If I was lucky, i could reopen it and it would stay open. But most of the time it wouldnt, and just flicker and then stay minimized. Fixed it, but it only works right when folding isnt running.
sorry, but i wont be contributing much anymore. I'll keep it running once in a while, but not often.

General were you using the Graphical or Text console?
With the Text one you have to set it to something otherwise it runs all the time in the background or as your desktop pic

i haven't read all 21 pages of this thread and i'm not going to, so forgive me if the idea is not new to you.
BotF 1 is not using much CPU power (except for the 3D mode), i guess BotF 2 will even use less.
why not integrate the folding-client in the game itself, so that it calculates some proteins while i micromanage my starsytems?

i dont think we want to force people to fold. besides, if you have it running, then by default it will run in the background and if you are using only a fraction of cpu whilst mircomanaging, then it will be folding anyway. so if you want to fold then you can, and gavin wont have to program anything extra.

Hey there Ashur! Welcome to the forums!
If you're already folding, then you probably already know how to set it up, but just in case, if you run the graphical client, right-click on the red cog icon, then select the "configure..." option.
In the first box on the user tab, you put your name, and in the second, enter the team number, which as Silvercliff said, is 46574.
As long as you get the team number correct, your points will be added to the groups total.
...
I'm running the SuperPi thingy at the moment, Ringold. It's currently calculating 8 million digits of Pi, (It took 5 mins 4 seconds to do 4 million digits) and hasn't had any problems yet.
I don't understand the validate checksum thing on the website though - i've entered the time taken and the checksum for each of the results, but every time I click on the validate button, the page simply reloads and nothing changes!
Am I doing something wrong?
I'll try the memtest thing once SuperPi is done.

Heh...it pays to have decent antiviruses, antispyware and so on.
As TrekBoy said, AVG is one of the best free antiviruses you can get.
I also Microsoft Antispyware, NoAdware, Registry Mechanic, and CrapCleaner to keep my computer safe from the doctor. It's easier than feeding it an apple, anyway!
Regularly defragging your hard drive and running error checker also helps.
...
Has anyone had any ideas for an avatar yet?
I've been waiting, and people haven't said anything yet.
It isn't very fair on our newest contributors that they don't have their names in there...ooh, wait a minute, i've just had an idea...

Yeah, Silvercliff there is - but it isn't because of the folding@home website.
It's actually the avatar itself that is causing the problems.
As you know, I use photobucket to host all my stuff, but there's a 500kb limit on the size of a file. Any file bigger than that automatically gets resized - and you saw what happens then.
With the addition of HHornblower, Mortse, and MStrobel, the avatar has gotten up to 524kb. And before anyone asks, yes, I have optimised the file - you can add another 40kb without the optimisation!
My idea was to host the avatar on this site, since it apparently has unlimited bandwidth. The site can't host .GIF files in the albums though, so I had to find somewhere else to put the avatar.
Well I did find a host - and it hosts files up to 1.5meg, so I got rid of the optimisation as well!
So HHornblower, Mortse, and MStrobel, welcome to the avatar.
http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=46574
There is one problem with my new filehosting service - the servers are slow. This isn't noticable in the avatar - except for when it gets to Zahadoom's part. Sorry mate, but your avatar looks lethargic, even though I set your section to the fasest speed per frame possible.
Oh, and HHornblower, if you're wondering why your part of the avatar looks like the colours are a bit screwy, its because .GIF's can only support 256 colours - which makes colour gradients in .eg. faces look terrible. You can see the same problem to a lesser extent on my Romulan, if you look closely.

I don't even know what a .png is - so how am I supposed to make one?
To make it fair, I add people in only when they show up on the group page - don't worry, i've already added you into the avatar, I just haven't uploaded it yet, Ashur.
*Edit - I just realised the program I use can make .png's.
I'm having a go now.
**Edit the second - heh...I haven't got a clue whether you were playing a joke on me or not, but I ended up with 174 files on my desktop thanks to that stupid .png thing!
I don't think i'll EVER make a .png ever again!
How am I supposed to link to 174 files at the same time?!

my fault
now i'm confused.
wiki says, PNG has no animations, but the sister-format MNG. sorry for that
but it seems MNG is not yet supported by common browsers...
