Oh...I must have a faster computer than you or something, Qaz. I completed the giant unit yesterday morning, and I completed a very small one this morning. (only 41 points)
I'm 14% through a 600 point unit now.

I'm doing p1150 - and my computer is averaging at about 14 minutes a frame.
My computer has a Pentium 4 540 Processor, working at 3.21Ghz, and 1Gb of RAM.

How does a Turion compare to mine?
My friend (Authur_Wonderbird/Gareth_Morgan - yes, they're the same guy, yes they're both folding for the team, yes he's an idiot for changing his name ) had 1000 quid to spend on a laptop, and he fancies the one they were selling in Aldi two or three weeks ago.
It has a Turion 64-Bit ML-30 Processor running at 1.6Ghz and 512Mb RAM.
I know Turions are powerful, especially since they're 64-bit, but it's only half the speed of my computer.
I'll tell you the full stats if you want to know, but they're the ones that I think are important for folding. He'll love to rub my nose in it, so i'd like to know beforehand whether I should recommend it to him - or not.

for games the amd 64 are allways better than intel computers, but for processing calculations intels allways tend to do much better and also it has to do with wether you have a 64bit operating system, i'm on windows xp 32bit and am proberly losing my 64bit advantage , but have a wireless setup through linksys and they still dont have 64bit drivers for windows xp 64bit, that problem with 64bit operating systems ya have to find 64bit drivers for all your componants, most my componants have 64bit drivers except for the wireless network

Ouch I bet that is frustrating!
I'm sure we'll see more drivers and programs being made for 64-bit systems soon though, so you shouldn't have to wait for too long.
I'll let my friend know that it would be good for his folding attempts then...

Wouldn't lay down a blanket statement and say either are good at 'processing calculations', since a lot has to do with architecture-specific optimizations and the type of calculation being done. 64bit or FPU intensive? AMD all the way. SSE2/SEE3 optimized with minimal cache-hit miss penalties? Intel carries the day.
I've got a Turion ML-34 myself, and its plenty good enough. Probably would game fine if my lappy had a decent vid card (which it doesnt). I undervolt it to .925v and cap it at 800mhz while its on batteries (and 1.6ghz with 1.125v on AC, 200mhz short of its 1.8ghz max -- keeps it running cooler and avoids the loud fan) and, shocking truth of the matter is, 800mhz goes along just fine! I was expecting some lousy, lousy, pig-in-mud performance, but instead I got better battery life, cool-to-the-touch laptop whose fan NEVER comes on any more, and the typical stuff (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Sunbird, Firefox, Thunderbird, Gaim/Trillian, FileZilla, uTorrent) all run just as they did before.
If your friend does buy it, and will be using it on the batteries regularly, pass along a recommendation to check out nordichardware.com and follow the same instructions I did in undervolting. 10-20% increase in battery life is nothing to shake a stick at Even if he buys an Intel-chip, a cpu is a cpu and they could undervolt too, but intel at 800mhz will be different than amd at 800mhz. But they're more energy efficient (Pentium Ms at least, not others), so they could stand a slightly higher clock.
And sure, WinRAR doesn't fly like it used to, but who buys a laptop for compressing 10gb files anyway?
Before I totally recommend and pimp-out Turion64s though, I heard intel had some new architecture chips out with dual-cores for laptops. Depending on the price, I'd definitely check them out. They should not only be rivals for Turion64s, but also dual-core and possibly much lower power consumption. I'm not a TOTAL AMD fanboy, I'm perfectly willing to admit Intel may be the better buy

Cool.
I'll pass on the info to him - although even with instruction, I doubt he'd make any changes like that - even with instructions. He's just like me, and simply won't touch the insides of a computer for fear of breaking it. (Or at least getting electrocuted )
...
We're team number 2296 now. 16000 points and we'll make it into the top 2000!

Oh, bad luck. Was it that virus that was supposed to have struck last week?
Remember, team 46574, and your name is qaz79. If you change your name - even the capitals - then the program will think you're someone different.
84 places to go (3435 points) until we're team 2000! Once we reach 2000th place, we'll be able to see breakdowns of our daily point scores etc!

Half an hour to go on my current unit, and then i'll add 153 points to our score.
I can't wait to see our points breakdown though, it's a shame that the folding@home website doesn't do it, but that would be a hell of a lot of data to keep track of...
...
I hope you haven't lost anything important, Qaz. At least you can get your BOTF2 download back easily enough...

72 more positions to go until we hit 2000 in the rankings!
speaking of a virus, one really somehow got in to my laptop, and then to the other four computers that've been on the LAN before I thoroughly cleansed the whole thing. I feel your pain
Good job to everyone in the top ten, especially the top 5 right below me. Pretty decent points you've all poured out since MOE started this thread!
...
Any bets on how long until we make, say, 50 pages?

Doing an 80-pointer at the moment, got another hour and a quarter to go.
It's only 50 frames, but it's averaging at one frame every 5-7 minutes.
Only 1938 points to go!
Oh, and it took us 51 days to make 25 pages of thread, so at that rate we should be on page 50 by the 2nd of March...but whose counting?

The hell with what the F@H site says if you go on the extreme-overclocking site
http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/ ... hp?s=&p=20
we're at number 2000
COME ON

Damn you TrekBoy, you beat me to it!
And we're now team 1999.
As far as I can tell, the extremeoverclockers website only updates once every 3 hours/day, and is based on (But doesn't necessarily follow) the folding@home stats.
As an example, the Google team doesn't show up in the stats, but it is ranked as team number 2 on folding@home. (Individual people are ranked at number 1)
As such, this also means there is a much bigger delay on the updates than on the actual folding@home website. That's why we currently have no team production history yet, but it shows up that we have actually gained points today!
This doesn't mean we can start slacking now though! 999 places til we're team 1000!
...Oh, and remember we're doing this in the name of science...

And the only reason it says we'll be overtaken is cos they've divided our score for today by seven for the week. in we do about 900-1000 points a day then we'll go up and up in no time

I just noticed that you can make graphs of the different production futures of your group compaed to your nearest "threat" and "conquest" groups.
We're doing quite well, but CS-lique.com are gonna be tough competitors to beat...
Future Production Histories
I've also found more detailed info on our current production history:
The Group's Detailed Production History
And i'm currently experimenting with adding the team stats to my signature. If I find out how to do it, i'll let you guys know how to do it for your own signatures...
*Edit - damn! Damn damn damn damn damn damn damn! Oh, did I say damn?
As far as I can tell, you can't get signature images until your team is at least number 800 or better.
The best I can get is this:
http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/xml/team_summary.php?t=46574
Ringold, if you know if i'm wrong, then pleeeeeeeeease show us how to do it.

with CS-lique.com, our current production rate is actually more than them and they haven't got any more points today. my WU will be done at about 22:30 tonight. how about the rest of you?

I was basing that on their projected future production history. They might not have turned in any units/points today, but that cpould simply be because they are in the middle or a large unit, or they're simply away on holiday or something.
I've still got 12 hours of solid folding before I complete my current unit, although I completed two small<ish> units this morning.
