There's honour amongst Klingons as well!
If Paramount are so worried about people "stealing" their stuff, then they'd have their lawyers trawling the internet and shutting down sites like ex-astris-scientia and trektoday because they don't have the rights to even mention the name.
Obviously they don't do that, so I think the term "borrowing without giving back" is better suited to our case.
Besides, if Paramount had put its thinking cap on and had decided to allow a successor company to Microprose to release BOTF2 themselves, then we wouldn't even have met each other to have this conversation... 8O

That looks really good. I think that 2d combat can be very intresting.

This is how I see the issue of obsolescence. Hope this makes sense.
NON-COMBATANTS
All non-combatants will become obsolete when a new ship in that type will become available. So when Colony Ship II is attained, the type I is no longer available, and neither will Colony Ship II be available when Colony Ship III tech is reached. This goes for Hospital Ships, Troop Transports, and Surveyors too.
FRIGATES
Obsolete Frigates will be available in one step back of tech building level. Deadalus will still be available at Miranda construction level. And when Frigate III is attained, (New Orleans), Miranda remains available, but Daedalus disappears from the available build list.
CRUISERS
A step back of one Cruiser type is in effect here also. Icarus is available alongside the Constitution, as Constellation is available alongside Niagara. I suggest with the Intrepid at Tech 10, that Constellation is retained in availability. So at your highest tech level late in the game, three Cruiser types will be available to build: Constellation, Niagara and Constellation.
HEAVY CRUISERS and EXPLORERS
None of the earlier ship types will become obsolete or be phased out. Excelsior Heavy Cruiser I remains available at Akira tech, as will the Ambassador at Sovereign.

That's a massive ship list for the final tech levels.
Just think what it'll be like working up to that - starting off with only an NX and a Conestoga, then working all the way up to 18 ships!
Ooh...goosebumps!
...
Welcome back Trekbec!
Yes, I had noticed you hadn't been around in a while. Did you get my funny emails?

One thing about upgrading. In BotF, the upgrades where actualy refits. That's why they occured in the first place and why they were able to occur. In this game, there are no upgrades. They are all brand new ships, so it would be a bid awkward if a daedalus miraculously changes into a miranda class after you spend some credits on it.
What I propose is that no ships upgrade at all, but just remain into service until destroyed or mothballed. So even when a ship becomes absolete, you cannot build them, but you keep the ones you have and have no upgrade possibility.
cdrwolfe, how so isn't this the one being made by jig? He take the project over, so it is.

I'm glad to hear that the Ambassador won't be phased out. For some reason, that's by far my favorite type of ship. Maybe because it was the first class of ship I ever saw given airtime besides the Galaxy? Having an absolutely huge list of available ships from which to build a massive armada sounds beyond a blast.
One thing, though. Shouldn't the last 10 posts or so be moved to maybe a new thread?
As for the idea of using 2D combat, if the gameplay itself is well done then it doesn't really matter. 3D combat is much more appealing to the eye, and definitely can be much more immersive and entertaining, but it just depends on how the rest of the game works. My favorite games ever, Imperialism and Imperialism II, both use 2D combat, but the gameplay itself more than makes up for any lackings in the combat field. Usually, 2D combat is also easier--at least in the area of understanding what is happening. Ideally, both will be combined, though, to make the most immersive and appealing game possible--in my opinion anyway.

The screen shots of this other BOTF project do look pretty delicious, or maybe its the illusion of the far superior resolution to the crappy 800x600 of BOTF. But I insist they release this game in English too. I insist! I think it's healthy to have two concurrent projects. The more BOTF the merrier.

Very true, a bit of healthy 'competition' (right word?) can't harm anything
