To answer your question, some people claim the American school system DOESN'T work.

Be that as it may, students typically spend 12 years in primary and secondary school before high school graduation. About a third of Americans go onto to college -- with over a quarter finishing four-year college degrees.

A fraction go on beyond that to graduate school (scientists & academics) and professional schools (doctors, lawyers, business people and engineers). These advanced degrees take from 2 (Business) to 4 (Medical School) to 10+ (PhD in some programs) years.

Beyond these degrees many folks still have more to do. Doctors typically have 3 to 7 more years of residency training in whatever their speciality is, while PhD's often have post-doctoral training positions which last 1-2 years.

Its a mess. But I maintain it DOES WORK.
