Well this thread is the all NEW BOTF2 Folding@Home Thread! After i basiclly destroyed our old one with F@H updates . Don't worry i've got an idea how to put them in in a continuous post .
I've taken what i thought were the most helpful bits from the previous thread especially with all the questions and turned into a sort of FAQ about Folding. Hopefully this will encourage more people to Fold for us.

Just poking my head in to say I'm still alive.. I've probably been turning in about 1/3 the points I used to, had problems with my main desktop and havent been able to afford to buy new RAM, until last night, so maybe this weekend i'll be sending in points again.
A ton I've missed out on! That "Supremacy" thread looks good, I'll have to read that tomorrow..
Whats the status of the team? Hopefully it's larger then when I last checked a month or so ago

Hey there Ringold.
Actually, quite the opposite has happened with the team.
Billy has pulled out coz folding was causing some pretty major problems with his computer.
In the last week, me, you, Trekboy, Authur, Ashur, Bogseat, Europekid, and Mortse are the only people who have apparently folded. Considering there are supposed to be 20 people in the group (Excluding Gareth coz he's now Authur ) that means our group is considerably smaller than it should be.
Still, we're gaining points, even if it is less than it was. For a while, we were averaging at just over 200 PPD, but it's picked up again in the last 2 weeks or so. We're now around 730 PPD, and that'll go up again if you start folding like you used to, Ringold.
We're currently ranked as team number 1515, so we're definitely doing well. We've gone up 4 places in the last 24 hours, and 26 places in the last 7 days.
...
So what exactly was the problem with your computers Ringold?

Well i'm glad to see we've all found the new thread fine. The other one was just getting a bit cluttered lol. Only occational updates from now on, highlighting points gained or places.
I was sort of wondering why we had dropped our points quite a bit but atleast now we're doing around 750ppd. Hopefully if we can sort your prob out Ringold then we'll be back to our brilliant best.
If anyone has any ideas for attracting some more members then that'd be great
Oh and if anyone would like to do a f@h group FAQ that'd be great

Quote: Oh and if anyone would like to do a f@h group FAQ that'd be great I'm lazy so i'll just quote myself. Quote: Right then, how do you use the program? This is how I set it up: (I'm assuming it is already installed and you're running Windows XP - Setup may be different if you run an older version of Windows) To run the program, you need an open Internet connection so the program can send and recieve work units. The Internet connection doesn't have to be opened permanently, the program just needs to be able to connect when it starts for the very first time, and from then on whenever it completes a work unit. If you have a Linux or Apple computer, these instructions may not apply to you. I don't have computers that run on either of these systems, so i'm sorry, but you'll have to figure out how to run the program for yourself. 1] Start the program. If you've installed it, the program should either be on your desktop, or in your start->program->folding@home folder. The program's icon is a red cog. 2] Once it has started, the red cog icon should appear in your taskbar. (Bottom-right corner of the screen) If you double-click it, you'll see it working, but if you right-click it, you'll get a list of options. Select the "Configure..." button. 3] The first tab (User) is where you enter the information. Enter your chosen user name in the first box, and in the second, enter the number 46574 - this is my group number. If you enter it wrongly, your work units will get sent to the wrong group! 4] Select the second tab. (Connection) These settings allow you to set how the program accesses the internet. If you select the first option, the program will always ask you if it is "allowed" to connect to the network so it can send or recieve work units. I personally do not reccommend this, since it means you will have to manually allow it to access every time, and if you leave you computer running, this will actually slow it down and render leaving your computer on pointless. If you'd rather the security of knowing what it is doing every time, then select this option. 5] The second/third checkbox is for if you use a dialup/proxy connection. If you have a dial up connection (Or a broadband connection that needs to dial to connect in the first place like me) select this option. It will save your password and username so if you aren't connected when it completes a work unit, it will connect to the internet for you. 6] The final option in this tab requires the most thought. If you select this option, you can send/recieve work units/results that are larger than 5Mb. This might not be a good idea for dialup users. If you select it to allow such work units, you will occaisionally recieve work units that are either extremely larger/complex, or you will recieve an experimental core. (The cores tell your computer how to fold the Proteins etc) Experimental cores are less stable than ordinary ones, so are more prone to failing (You lose the current work unit) or may cause the program to crash (In which case just restart it) You get a much larger number of points for such units to compensate for these risks. 7] The third tab is all about displaying the program. Most people can ignore these settings, since they only affect what you see when you double click the program icon. The molecule draw rate is how often the visualisation changes onscreen. Move it to the right to speed it up, or left to slow it down. This may increase your processor usage. The visualisation type should be self explanatory. 8] The Screensaver options should be pretty obvious as well, and these might be useful to people who leave their computer on permanently. You might also fin this useful, General. 9] The Main Title checkbox just makes text scroll on the screen, and you can enter whatever text you want in the box. 10] The logos just cause an extra icon of you choice to appear on the screen. Just follow the instructions to enter one, should you want to. 11] The final tab is also extremely important. The first option is pretty self explanatory, since they've explained it for you. Most people can set it to lowest priority, but if you have problems with the program, set it to slightly higher. 12] The CPU usage percent option is the option that has the most effect on the program. I'd recommend where possible that you set it to 100%. This will mean that the program uses all of the processor that is available to it. If you have a temperamental computer though, set it to something like 90% so you know you have some power spare. 13] The checkbox for higly optimised code may also be useful for those with laptops or those who use intensive programs. Disabling highly optimised code reduces the strain on the CPU. 14] The checkpointing frequency is how often your progress is saved. Think of it as a game and set it to save as often as possible! (Move the slider all the way to the left) 15] The pausing checkbox is for laptops, pretty self-explanatory. 16] The final option os for deadlines. Most work units have a maximum deadline for running work units. (Usually several months) If you return your work unit before this deadline, the number of points you get is increased, depending on how quickly you returned the results. If you will rarely be running the program, or won't let it run for long periods of time, select the preference for "deadlineless". Otherwise set it to to standard (Some deadlines) or no preference (Many deadlined ones, but you will obviously get more points if you complete them in time) I hope this helps people!

The problem with my comp?
Well..
Bottom line, Athlon 64's of all current flavors up to Revision E just plain have a hard time dealing with 4 populated RAM dimms. I wasn't aware of this, and tried relentlessly to push the issue of overclocking my 4x512mb RAM to where it used to go with just 2x512mb.. In the end, I think I hurt the RAM from high voltage, or something, and now it's not taking even stock speed stable, so just to avoid a torrential downfall of failed WUs, I suspended F@H until the situation is resolved.
Resolution is coming in the form of a little brown box from ZipZoomFly.com's California warehouse, and is on a truck this every minute probably pushing on through Colorado or New Mexico or so, on it's way to it's new daddy. Scheduled delivery for the 26th, but a day or two early wont hurt..
Good thing is, with this new RAM my ppd should be perhaps 5-7% higher; I'll be able to run the RAM AND the processor both at higher speeds than before.
Anyway, no fear. Ringold's work-unit eating machine will be back at it sooner or later.
Tsk tsk on the rest of you though!
Should be getting my girlfriend's computer together again this weekend (if her brother breaks it again, I.break.his.BONES), and I'm going to insist upon it running F@H as a service as payment for a geeky services. They're not big on leaving their computers running, but a little bit is better than nothing.

Sorry if this is a little off topic but i'd really apreciate a solution to my problem.
As many of you guys know i'm a bit of a hardware freak, so i took the liberty of buying a few old cpu's off ebayUK, which are between 486 and PentiumMMX standards. I can't really do much about the 486 but i'd love to be able to test the rest of them. After a long trawl through MOBOT last night i found an old ABIT motherboard that supports all AMD and Intel CPU's from that era. Unfortunately none seem to be avalible.
It's the ABIT IT5A (you read correctly). If anyone on here has one or knows someone that would be willing to part with it that'd be fantastic. I'd happily pay money for the price of the board + postage costs.
http://www.motherboards.org/mobot/mothe ... Abit/IT5A/
Thanks again.
Chris
PS: Can anyone clarify if the above motherboard supposrts 50FSB CPU's as said by MOBOT. However this seems to conflict with the manual
OR if anyone owns or knows someone with an ACER V72MA who's willing to part with it

This isn't a race or something that we're forcing you to do, Qaz. If you can only do 1 PPD then that's still something.
The whole point of folding is for Scientific and Medical research. It has the added bonus of helping to advertise the game as well.
If overclocking is frying your computer, then fine, don't overclock it. If you don't run your computer morning, noon, and night, don't worry about it. As long as folding@home is running in the background when your computer is on, then you'll be helping the team - and at the same time could complete the unit that leads to a cure for Cancer.
It really doesn't matter, it's up to you what you do. We can't force you to fold, but the more help we get, the better.

People can see it listed as one of the folding groups.
Of course, only existing fans of BOTF will know what it means, but i've put in a link to these forums on our team page, so people might visit that way.
I also know for a fact that there are other teams of Trek fans out there, coz there's one called Wolf359 - Who other than Trek fans or possibly Astronomers would come up with a team name like that?!

And the sooner we can get into the top 1000, the far greater numbers of people will look us up on the EOC and F@H sites, plus maybe google us if they're intrigued

Well this is the first meaningful update! We got an teriffic 1436 points yesterday . Thanks to not so many teams picking up points that's taken us up to Position 1478. However, we'll need to fold a load of points now, as the teams infornt of us are well ahead. Keep up the excellent work! Let's not let it drop

Bringing my computer back to folding tonight, I'll keep a close eye on it to make sure it's not failing WU's but it should be solid.
Hopefully this will reaccelerate our rise in ranking
It should also be more productive than before; saw some real-world performance increases.. I compressed a set of files (ISO's and updates from every Total Annihilation game made, lol) took 38min before, but only 30 now (21% quicker), so hopefully F@H will show a similar increase.

Wow...that's considerably higher than the 5-7% you were hoping for Ringold...congratulations!
My computer has a Gb of RAM. The people at PC World said that I wouldn't be able to upgrade the RAM anymore though; I think they said all the slots were used up or something. It had 512Kb of RAM when I bought it, but I had it upgraded straight away.
I'm certainly not gonna open up my computer to find out for myself, and I wouldn't know how anyway.
Incidentally, i'm having some trouble with my DVD-ROM drive. It isn't recognising disk of any kind anymore.
I have a DVD-RW drive which i'm using instead, but the access times are slower with this drive. I've checked my device manager and it says there's nothing wrong though. Does anyone know what could be causing it?
I'm gonna take my computer to PC World for them to have a look at it next week (Got coursework to do this week so can't risk taking it now ) but i'd prefer it if I could sort it out myself - unless it involves opening up my computer of course.

Optical drives, like DVD-ROM's & DVD-RW's, unfortunately, dont live forever
For me, they've been the most frequently failing items. Hard drives, second. They're just about the only mechanically moving parts in a computer, and heavy use burns through their lifespan. That might be it, that's what I'd bet on.
Thankfully, DVD-ROM's are pretty cheap compared to a few years ago, $15-30 USD. I'd recommend taking the side off of your case and taking a look inside, it's usually the left side panel that'll give you the proper view inside, and look to see where the DVD-Rom is, what cables its connect to and where they lead. That way, if they want to beat you up on installation, you can buy it and do it yourself. There's just one tool required, and that's a screw driver.
Other then that, the only maintenace item I could think of would be to make sure the cables are connected in to the back of the DVD-ROM securely (I had a problem where the IDE, the wide ribbon looking one, was only about 3/4 the way in, and it'd power up but wouldnt read anything) attached, but it shouldnt be a problem if you havent done anything.. violent to your computer. Additionally, a shot out of a can of compressed air in to the inside of the open tray wouldn't hurt, given its non-functioning status.
If you do open up your case, take that same can of compressed air and blow off all the dust that I know must be in every nook and cranny as well
I got raped on my last can btw, 7.99, but I needed it immediately and couldn't afford the time to shop around. Damn university tech store >.<
Otherwise though, another option is to just like the DVD-ROM sit idle.. as long as the other drive works fast enough to play DVD's on the fly and whatnot. Save the money spent on a redundant optical drive towards a future new computer from the ground up.
Too bad you don't live around here in Florida, I wouldn't mind dropping by and showing you my tricks of the hardware enthusiast trade

I've still got my old computer, although we don't use it. It's about 6 years old.
It's got an AMD K6-2 450Mhz Processor, 40Gb Hard drive, 160Mb RAM and 32Mb Graphics Card. (Dunno what one though) I haven't turned it on in about 7 months though so I don't even know it still works!
I was always having problems with it though. There was something wrong with the battery on it - it just wouldn't keep the time once it was turned off. One or two pther devices also failed during its long life. I think in total we went through 12 batteries, a new motherboard, a new bios, 2 new hard drives, and a new CD-ROM drive.
I still use the printer though, but my scanner isn't completely compatible with my computer. The wire is damaged as well so it isn't really safe to use it anyway.
As for my current computer, I pay a fiver a month to PC World for coverage, so i'll call them when I have some free time after my exams. I have another drive that I can use so it doesn't really matter.
...I don't have much luck with computers though do I?

I gotta concur with Raiden; I've done the math every time, and every time I build a computer I ultimately save a couple hundred bucks compared to what one would have to pay for equivalent parts or performance from any of the pre-built brands like HP or Dell. Plus, when I turn it on that first time after doing a clean Windows install, there's not an ounce of crap infecting it; only annoyance is Windows Messenger, which quickly gets annihilated. No billion little programs wanting attention, not a desktop full of advertisements, not a system deeply, permanently entwined and compromised with what I'd call adware these days. I've got pretty good at unrooting a lot of that stuff from friends computers, but I usually tell even them to boot to their windows disc before even going in to windows the first time, deleting the partitions, and formatting from scratch.
Not to mention, afterwords I feel as if each and every one of these computers of mine are my little babies, born of the toil of my hands over the course of a couple hours construction, months of research, and hours upon hours at work building up the money to afford to bring them in to the world
As a side effect, you also learn a hell of a lot, 'cause when crap breaks, its about your only option. And really, thats a good thing.

.... AND what I came here to say to begin with is.. i'm back to full production.
I still can't fold full-time at work, but occasionally I can. I've got a console version tweaked to run off a USB stick, using timeless (no deadline) tinker-core workunits. No big points, probably only 5-8 hours a week running time, but better than nothing!
I'd be able to sneak it in at work oddly enough if they didnt screw up their computers so much that they go in to Task Manager so much they couldn't help but notice it. Sure enough, within 24hrs, I'd hear "Hey... anybody know what the hell FAH504-Console.exe is and why its taking up 100% of the CPU?"

I'd noticed that you were folding again, Ringold. Our average point score shot up from around 700ppd to 1081ppd in just one day!
We also got 2105 points yesterday - that's officially the MOST points we've ever had in a single day!

Is it just my computer, or is folding at home running really slowly? I've had a work unit worth 149 points now for about 5 days now and it's still only about half done! Usually I'd have finished it in 4 days at the most!
I'm asking coz i've noticed our 24/ hour average score is really low now.

Yeah, i've noticed that it's slowed down - and our average point score has more than halved during the last week.
You guys are still folding, aren't you?
