While I was playing Ogame (I dont like it very much, they have stolen all technology things from ST and SW) i got a thought why could we not build:
"S t a r__T r e k__-__B i r t h__o f___the__F e d e r a t i o n__I I I__O n L i n e"
We have the knowlage. All we need is time! And imagine what good can that do! We will have milions of players!
What say ye? Are we off to seek out strange new servers and meet new MySql databases.
If you would like. I have my own reseller hosting package so we could host it there. It is a good server, no problems with it.

BotF 2 is developed for PC.
BotF 3 is for internet.

Would it be the same basic game by the same devs as BOTF2

Depends really.
I certainly doubt that the other devs would want to do this.
Jig's CURRENT game is more than a year from completion, so he's not gonna want to start a new project from scratch.
And how exactly would you make it online? It would be difficult for anyone to complete a game coz we all know how long a BOTF game can go on for. We're aiming for more of everything in BOTF2, so games will likely take even longer than in BOTF!
I'm against this idea, coz a completely online game just wouldn't be BOTF.

Sorry, i got the impression it would be a multiplayer aspect not a full multiplayer game - edit: and botf2's gonna have that anyway. Still a good idea though

@MOE
The simplicyti of the game is in her duration. Imagine. You get registerd. Chose what power you wish to join and viola! Or you can chose any species in the game (minor races) that you like (Andorians perhaps).
We will have full tech tree for developing. Off course here is the multi part of the project. We will need consultans abot what tech goes where, we dont want for everyone to have the same tech tree. In BotF that wasnt such a bad idea, but now we can go a lot further.
I think this i managable and that all of us can participate in building the game.

But it's deffinately something for the future. Probably in a couple of years. We want to have BOTF2 out and working fine with all the extra bits.

You thinking of a MMORPG, kinda like what ST Online is going to be? But instead of 3d its 2d game similar to style of botf. Well its nice idea having a constant universe etc. But resource wise it aint gona happen with anyone here as MMO games cost a heck of a lot to maintain and update, not to mention the server costs.
If your thinking not a MMO game then ignore the above.

I agree with MOE if thats what sirNemanjapro ment
if you mena like a game were you can join a race and its like a universe that runs online all the time like trek online (MMO game think its called thanks to skeet) then how could it work?????
BOTF is a turn based game and how could you play a full game coz someone would be offline when others are online lets say i loged into it to play my race and i wanted to make war on some who wasnt online and i started attacking how would that work??? It wouldnt dont think this is a good idea its not BOTF without turn sysetem and it is imposible to do.
I fyou mean just a online game then they all ready excist and people play them all the time. So i dont see what you rely mean by this.
I think that trek online will be good basicly a online RPG for trek would be good in genral

i think this is an excellent idea, but this is what I believe it should be:
- NO longer turnbased (this would be difficult)
- you dont get major powers, you get to create your own
- MMO style
I think it would be a mod for BOTF2. All you would need to do is modify the multiplayer code to make it support multiple servers, accept new players, not to offline, etc.
And then change the turnbased code so that a turn automatically happens every few hours or something. I dont know, just a thought.

yea but if it was every few hours lets say you missed a few hours or a few days then you would be in alot of trouble could be been destroyed decleared war attacked by the borg and so on
its a good idea but the game would be turn based and thats not BOTF is it so i dont like sound to be honest but if someone dose come up with it that be good

i have some ogame experince from a "small" (up to 1k players) german game called fotu (future of the universe). we are in a test state again after the last complete rounde couz of a complete rework (not our first time^^).
its turnbased too, thats the best part for botf to get mmog compatible. server coasts arent really a problem if one server is enough (depends on player capacity and complexity).
i spend a lot of thougts to a mmog botf before. i hate how my actual project eats time up for balancing some very different options for very different races. but with major races only botf would have a lot of problems allready solved.
the hard part will be the combat system and attack moves between players who could be not online all time... combat wont be 3d anymore and your ships have to react on their own when you are not online. even move on their own if somebody attacks you.
this will take a lot of ideas to create a really good mmog worth called botf online...
my game is in many ways different but i hope for many people better than the stupid mass of other mmogs out there. if you wanna try
http://www.fotu.org / http://www.fotu.de
the english version is in work but, as you can imagine: no english techtree an manual without german techtree and manual, no complete german techtree and manual without complete major game parts (like race balancing etc what still has to be done)
i'm in the project with concepting for maybe 3 years. we managed to keep our major game design, the tings we were inspired by the first versions. but each attampt to increase gameplay, features etc caused a lot of work and balancing

ok my 2 cents:
I have an idea. What if you have to be in a group, where you can put the ships into positions in tics. Every hour a turn goes past. But every user of that group can position ships and make decisions. You have a chat window for your group and can talk to eachother. Battles will not be like in botf as we know it, but more you will get to see the resultst. This will mean much more tactics because not the uber ships will be the strongests.
Like this: Small > Big, Medium > Small, Big > Medium. Only a very short example.
Either we do it in Java or just in php or something?
btw: i have enough experience in php and mysql, sql database to do such a project.

This is definitely too different a project for any BOTF2 code to be useful. So if someone else wants to tackle development, feel free to give it a go . You might want to take a look at Microsoft SQL Server 2005. It has an embedded .NET CLR, and as such you can write custom data types and stored functions/procedures in higher-level languages like C# and VB.NET. For this reason, I think it would be particularly well-suited to this type of project. I've written a turn-based web strategy/RPG game before, and implementing the game logic in raw T-SQL is incredibly tedious.
